Abstract

Aesthetics in multimedia works is defined as an artistic phenomenon to beautify the form of moving image works. Aesthetics plays a role in the elements of film visualization and creates symbols that can be identified by the audience. Aesthetics and symbolism in film function as a communication and foundation for understanding accompanied by creative ideas. The meaning of aesthetics cannot be separated from the form of meaning of an object related to an idea and feeling. One of the Indonesian films that applies aesthetics through artistic elements is Yuni film. The film tells of a student named Yuni who is frustrated between continuing her education to college or getting married at an early age because of the patriarchal culture inherent in her social environment. Yuni's character is synonymous with the color purple based on three elements, namely clothing, setting, and object/property because it has its own meaning for the theme of the story and the character's character. This study uses a qualitative method with an analytic descriptive approach. Sources of data come from Yuni film and scientific journals that examine similar topics regarding the film's work. The data analysis technique was carried out by watching Yuni film and interpreting the meaning of the purple color present in it. The result of this study is that the color purple is a symbol for the identity/characteristics of the Yuni character and has its own artistic value in it.

Abstract

Although centered on its female audiences, soap operas have long served to legitimize the practice of traditional gender roles. In Joy (2015), soap opera is depicted as one of the medias that construct traditional gender roles while also offering different responses from the characters. This study aims to examine how audience reception influences the meanings constructed by media. By utilizing Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding theory, it analyzes two reading positions represented by the characters Joy and Terry. Terry embodies the dominant reading position by accepting the traditional values, whereas Joy embodies the oppositional reading by rejecting traditional gender roles. The findings suggest that media is not an entirely hegemonic force, as oppositional readers—such as the one presented by Joy—do exist. Ultimately, audiences possess the power to interpret media messages.

Abstract

Anime serves as a powerful medium that can depict natural phenomena in a visually engaging manner. This study explores the depiction of meteorological processes in the anime Naruto Shippuden, particularly through the technique Kirin used by Sasuke Uchiha. The analysis focuses on how the anime portrays storm cloud formation, condensation, cyclonic winds, and lightning, comparing these representations with real-world atmospheric and meteorological principles. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research draws from visual scenes and scientific literature to evaluate the accuracy of the weather-related processes depicted. The findings reveal that while the anime takes creative liberties for dramatic effect, the underlying concepts reflect a basic understanding of weather modification and storm formation. This study aims to bridge scientific literacy and popular culture by showing how fiction can inspire interest in meteorological science.

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of Christian symbolism in the film and series Neon Genesis Evangelion through a semiological approach. The research employs a semiotic analysis based on Charles Sanders Peirce's theory. The findings indicate that Neon Genesis Evangelion systematically employs Christian iconography to depict the existential transformation of humanity in an apocalyptic context. The cross, which appears in the explosions following the defeat of each Angel, serves as a marker of divine death while also signifying salvation. The Lance of Longinus, traditionally used in Christian teachings to confirm the death of Jesus on the cross, functions in the series as the primary instrument in the Third Impact event—a reality reconstruction that blurs the boundaries between destruction and re-creation. Additionally, the use of Angel names derived from the Christian angelic hierarchy reinforces the spiritual narrative that intertwines religious mythology with the fictional world-building of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Through this analysis, the study asserts that Christian symbolism in Neon Genesis Evangelion is not merely aesthetic or decorative but constructs a complex dialectic concerning human existence, suffering, and the pursuit of salvation. The series demonstrates how religious symbols can be adapted in popular media to convey broader narratives about the meaning of existence and human destiny within the landscape of contemporary culture.

Abstract

To this day, many still perceive animation merely as a product for children, a perspective that motivated the push for the movement of “animation is cinema.” Driven by this movement, this research focuses on the artistic and technological evolution of animation through three Spider-Man adaptations, each representing a different era: Spider-Man (1967), Spider-Man: The New Animated Series (2003), and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). Using a qualitative method with a content analysis approach, this research examines the three works through the frameworks of animation aesthetic morphology, and also Paul Wells’ classification of animation styles. The results of the study show a clear progression from one work to another, with each possessing its own characteristics and identity that represent the era in which they were made. The development of animation, as represented by the aesthetics of these three objects, affirms that animation is a medium of boundless artistic expression. So with this article, the researcher hopes could help those who read it to better understand animation capabilities as a medium.

Abstract

Film is a visual art form that combines moving images, sound and narration to convey a story or message to the audience, it can also act as a medium to deepen understanding of the mental state possessed by humans. In interpreting dreams according to Freud, it can be done through two methods, namely Dream Interpretation using one of Freud’s methods, namely the symbolic method, which means interpreting dreams as a whole with dreams that are thought about repeatedly, it can affect human memory about the meaning of these dreams carried out using qualitative methods through an analytical descriptive approach. In the movie Ketika Berhenti Disini, in every scene where Dita wears glasses given by Ed, glasses are interpreted as clarity in seeing. A sign that there will be clarity in seeing, if in the context of this film is Ed's existence in the form of AI. which if you remove the food will disappear, is interpreted as a blur in the glasses because Ed cannot be seen again. The unity of a complete dream that is felt or done repeatedly can have an impact on the thinking of the brain itself in understanding a dream and seeing the dream. Every human being has fears, deep fears and also sadness that every human being always has. All of these things will be healed with good support from the environment and people around.

Abstract

This study scientifically explores the elements of visual and auditory framing through the theoretical perspectives of David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson. The objective of this research is to uncover the processes involved in the formation of symbols and meanings in the art of film. To achieve this, a qualitative research approach is employed, utilizing a literature study model. Data is gathered from scholarly journal articles and books that discuss the ideas of Bordwell, Thompson, and Barthes, as well as topics related to visual and auditory framing in film art and semiotic analysis in cinema. All collected data is analyzed and structured through the semiotic perspective of Roland Barthes, serving as a methodological framework for understanding the formation of symbols and meanings within a film work. The study finds that through visual and auditory framing—such as cinematography, mise-en-scène, sound effects, and film scoring—a text is constructed and presented to the audience. Through semiotic analysis, this text is deconstructed using the theories of connotation, denotation, myth, signifier, and signified, resulting in the emergence of symbolic forms. These symbols are then interpreted by viewers based on their individual life experiences, leading to the creation of meaning. This process fosters a new awareness that can serve as a foundational reference or guideline for both film studies and film production.
