Abstract

The film Jenderal Soedirman is a cinematic representation that portrays Indonesia's struggle for independence through the perspective of guerrilla warfare. However, the film also highlights the political dilemmas and differing strategies among historical figures, particularly between the paths of diplomacy and armed resistance. This study aims to analyze the narrative structure and the representation of the independence struggle in the film using Klaus Krippendorff’s content analysis approach and Roland Barthes’ semiotics. Through a qualitative method, the research examines how the film constructs meaning through signs and symbols that reinforce the notions of heroism and nationalism. The findings show that the film not only narrates General Soedirman's physical journey in guerrilla warfare but also reveals the ideological battles underlying the fight for independence. The film constructs General Soedirman as a symbol of resilience and morality in the face of colonial domination. The implications of this study affirm that cinema plays a vital role in shaping collective memory and nationalism. Furthermore, this research opens space for further exploration of historical representation in Indonesian cinema and how films can influence public understanding of the nation’s history.

Abstract

The docudrama film Remedi was created as an advocacy medium to voice the issue of sexual violence against persons with disabilities, a topic that remains underrepresented in Indonesian cinema. This study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to explore the subjective experiences of survivors, along with a scene reconstruction strategy as a form of sensitive and ethical visual representation. The findings indicate that the integration of survivors’ daily-life documentation with fictional reconstruction is able to create a balance between factual accuracy and emotional depth, thus providing space for victims to express their voices without having to relive their trauma. These findings affirm that docudrama functions not only as a medium of representation but also as an effective instrument of social advocacy in building public awareness, fostering empathy, and encouraging the emergence of policy support that is more inclusive toward vulnerable groups. Accordingly, Remedi demonstrates how cinema can serve as both a creative medium and a tool for social change that stands in solidarity with persons with disabilities who are victims of sexual violence.

Abstract

Korean drama or Drakor is one of the shows that is popular with various groups. One of the dramas that has a high rating in 2022 is entitled "Blind". With the mystery-detective genre, this drama has many plot twists. Tells about a typical murder, and the killer asks for a jury trial. The jury summoned for the trial consisted of seven people. The main characters in this drama are Ryu Sung Hoon as the judge from this specialty, Ryu Sung Joon, the judge's younger brother who is the detective in this case, and Eun Ki, a social worker and one of the seven trial jurors. In storytelling, of course there will be choices to build the narrative, this can be called the mutually exclusive theory. Mutually exclusive itself is an event whose occurrence cannot occur simultaneously at the same time. Indirectly here it is explained that there will be two or more choices or events that cannot occur simultaneously at the same time. So there must be something chosen and left behind, there will be things that will happen and things that will not happen. By using the mutually exclusive theory the author will apply it to the drama Blind. In almost every episode the character will be faced with various plots and choices and he can only choose one of these choices at the same time.

Abstract

This study analyzes the artistic design in the film Sinners (2025) using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach to uncover the meanings behind its visual elements. The primary focus is directed toward props and symbols such as the guitar, cutting wounds, and the cross, which function not merely as aesthetic complements but also as sign systems conveying profound messages related to identity, trauma, and ideology. Through the stages of denotation, connotation, and myth analysis, this study finds that the artistic design in the film represents complex social and cultural narratives, such as inherited sin, collective suffering, and the characters’ existential struggles. These symbols construct discourses on morality, religiosity, and internal conflict, positioning the artistic design as a medium of ideological expression that reinforces the film’s overall narrative meaning.

Abstract

This journal discusses the use of soundtracks in films. Backsound is understood as sound in the form of music or instruments commonly encountered throughout a film. From this, the meaning of backsound is certainly very different from that of a film's soundtrack. In this context, backsound is crafted as attractively as possible by production houses. A quantitative methodology is employed to measure the impact of music on viewers of survival films. The sample population consists of drifting enthusiasts in the city of Bandung, with a sample size of 30 individuals. The instrument used in this survey is a rating scale of 1-5. This research reveals that backsound creates a more emotional atmosphere in the hearts of film audiences. The process of creating backsound is also not arbitrary. A music stylist must thoroughly understand the content of the film to ensure that the backsound used truly matches the background music they compose.

Abstract

This study explores audience experiences in interpreting the film Petualangan Sherina 2 through a phenomenological approach. The research is motivated by the return of Petualangan Sherina after 23 years since its original release in 2000, which marked a pivotal moment in the resurgence of the Indonesian film industry. The study focuses on a group of viewers who had watched the first film during their childhood and have now watched its sequel as adults, particularly those aged between 32 and 38 years. Through in-depth interviews with 10 participants who met these criteria, the study finds that Petualangan Sherina 2 not only evokes nostalgia and childhood memories but also serves as a medium for self-reflection and the reinterpretation of life experiences. Viewers experience strong episodic and associative memories, as elements of the film—such as characters, music, and narrative—trigger recollections and emotions associated with their past. Furthermore, the film functions as an intergenerational bridge, as many first-generation viewers brought their children to watch the film, creating a new shared cultural experience. Employing a phenomenological approach, this study highlights how popular art can act as a catalyst for self-reflection, identity continuity, and the strengthening of emotional ties between individuals and their past experiences. The findings of this research are expected to contribute to the fields of film studies, psychology, and cultural communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

The 1998 riots were one of Indonesia's darkest events at the end of the New Order era, the reign of President Soerharto. These riots were caused by the multidimensional crisis around 1997-1998 which culminated in the May 1998 tragedy. The movie "Di Balik 98" dared to raise this riot as the background of a family drama-themed movie. The purpose of this research is to analyze the historical value and family dynamics contained in the film "Di Balik 98". This research uses a qualitative method with a semiotic approach which is described through 3 aspects namely sign, object, and interpretant. The results of this study show that the film "Di Balik 98" is successful in depicting history, this is evidenced by the analysis of the depiction of the Trisakti Tragedy, looting, arson, and ethnic Chinese discrimination. Soeharto's resignation is the culmination of the movie and the answer to the tragedy that occurred. Giving 3 points of view in the movie successfully gave the audience how the depiction of 3 families with their respective dynamics went through the 1998 tragedy. The implications of this research include an indepth understanding of Indonesian history, family dynamics in facing socio-political crises, as well as reflections on social change and its impact on people's daily lives.

Abstract

Ranah 3 Warna is a film based on a novel entitled "Ranah 3 Warna". As a continuation of the film Negeri 5 Menara, the film Ranah 3 Warna was released 9 years after the previous film and tells the story of the steps to reach the tower from the character Alif. The role of leather shoes in the film is a representation of Alif's character. This representation is shown from the beginning of the film to the end of the film. There are quite a few images in films that focus on shoes, where shoes are just an object. Representation is something that represents a situation. Alif's character is described as a strong person, even though he is hurt, he still accompanies him, and is able to adapt to a new environment that suits him. This research uses Charles Sander Pierce's semiotic theory to better understand signs, objects and interpretants. This research aims to determine the representation of leather shoes in the film Ranah 3 Warna on the main character. The method used in this research uses analytical descriptive data collection techniques using the Semiotics approach from Charles Sander Pierce. This research will dissect the representation of leather shoes which is often the focus in films with the character Alif as the main character. From this research, the data obtained shows that Alif's decision making on leather shoes is a representation of the main character, where Alif continues to be strong with himself, just like genuine leather shoes.

Abstract

This article discusses the character values contained in the film Surau dan Silek. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, employing Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis method. In his method, Peirce views the subject as an inseparable part of the signification process. Peirce's triadic model (representamen, object, interpretant, equivalent to the sign) shows the significant role of the subject in the process of language transformation. Peirce believed that signs have meanings that continuously evolve or undergo unlimited semiosis, which is the process of creating an endless chain of interpretants. This film is a cultural film in the Minangkabau language containing advice. The film tells the story of three Minangkabau teenagers who are excited about practicing silat, but they are left behind by their silat master, Mak Rustam, who decides to go abroad. This study finds the representation of character education in the film Surau dan Silek, where silat teaches the balance between emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence, intellectual intelligence, and heart intelligence. The film Surau dan Silek contains many moral messages, religious values, and cultural insights, which help change the perception of silat in Minangkabau, not only as a youth activity for fighting, but also as a character education from the perspectives of Islam and Minangkabau customs. This includes practicing Islam as a teaching and preserving the culture of surau and silat as Minangkabau youth activities.

Abstract

The film Air (2023), directed by Ben Affleck, depicts the negotiations between Nike and basketball star Michael Jordan in creating the Air Jordan shoe line. This study analyzes how the film represents and reproduces capitalist ideologies through narrative and symbolic visualization of products. Employing a qualitative approach and media text analysis, the research utilizes Karl Marx's theory of commodity fetishism and John Storey's theory of popular culture to dissect the relationship between products, consumerism, and identity. The analysis reveals that Air not only documents the historical process of creating a cultural icon but also asserts the media's role in creating symbolic meanings of products as forms of lifestyle and social status. Through product personification, celebrity cultism, and the alignment of individual values with commodities, the film serves as a concrete example of how capitalism operates through cultural representation.
