Abstract

This study aims at exploring the practice of teachers’ reflection as a potential medium to disentangle the rigid teaching and learning interactions where teachers take control or dominate learning discourses. Utilizing the qualitative method of narrative inquiry, this study offers insight into how teachers’ reflective practices can set the ground for more humane pedagogic practices for students to express their voices in learning. The stories from two teachers contribute to a deeper understanding of how the simple acts of reflection can deconstruct the rigid teachers-learners interactions and create opportunities for a more collaborative and equal position of knowledge-sharing practices between teachers and learners.

Abstract

This study reports on secondary students’ reflection towards multimodal reading tasks through virtual digital platform learning. It investigates students’ learning outcomes after studying a multimodal reading involving through five-step learning activities, such as lesson preparation to examine the lesson-planning process, including the use of supplementary materials, and the meaningfulness of activities, scaffolding/modeling to focus on making explicit and direct links between past learning related to the students’ schemata and new concepts, comprehensible input to consider adjusting teacher modeling multimodal reading to enhance comprehension, practice and application  and review and assessment to assess students’ learning, and provided feedback to students on their output The data were collected during the 2nd academic term (January-May 2020). The research was conducted in the Senior High School in Indonesia in which thirty five students (20 females and 15 males)  participated in this study. The data were analyzed by using Braun Clark’s (2006) thematic analysis.  The findings show that encountered some benefits from this digital platform learning such as the availability of myriad sources online which the students could access at their flexible and convenience time. Additionally, Student teachers’ autonomy, agency, engagement, confidence, skill-set, and the ability to collaborate through online discussion are the important point that they experienced during their learning reading digital texts. Finally, the short time of the studies included in exploration might also indicate the strong need for further longitudinal research on the topic.

Abstract

This study was conducted to analyze the translation methods of Indonesian Cultural Terms. It suggests that there are 8 translation methods including Word-for-word translation, Literal translation, Faithful translation, and Semantic translation, Adaptation Free translation, Idiomatic translation, and Communicative translation. A qualitative approach was applied in this study. The method for analyzing data is content analysis. Peer discussion and triangulation were applied to enhance the validation. The result of the translation method mostly uses literal translation with 32.29%. This proves that the Target Language (TL) still has many vocabulary deficiencies. The translator could not find equivalent cultural terms, then the translator had to borrow them from the Source Language (SL) as the translator could not find the equivalent of cultural terms from the original novel.

The result of calculation using Microsoft Excel 2019 program found that the correlation coefficient of grammar mastery and students' reading ability is 0.93 with a significant level of 0.01. With these results, it can be seen that these variables are positively correlated. And there is a significant relationship between grammar mastery and the student's reading ability.
