Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing a presidential speech, Joko Widodo in his inauguration on October, 2014.  In order to gain clear explanation about the transitivity and its modality also the ideology of Joko Widodo, Critical Discourse Analysis through functional linguistic analysis is employed. This metafunction analysis is based on Halliday & Matthiessen (2004) and Fairclough (1995). It is found that there are three processes used mainly by the speaker such material, mental and relational. The material process is utilized to state what happens, many linking verbs to state what is or should be and mental process to state what speaker thinks or feels about issue. Meanwhile, modality alludes to the point of view or conclusion of the speaker on the reality of a suggestion communicated in a sentence. Jointly, it expands their demeanor to a case or occasion that's characterized by a statement. Social cognition as the ideology of Joko Widodo shows the widespread use of non-public pronouns. Pronouns I and we are widely used in speech than others. The findings of this study may contribute to expanding the critical thinking skills of readers in language understanding and production.

Abstract

This study explores the way male and female students use process types in recount texts to represent their experiences.  To attain these goals, the qualitative design was employed and the main data were the students’ recount texts. The texts were then analysed using the transitivity framework, proposed by Halliday (1994), to unveil the representation of experiences by male and female students. The results indicate that the students from both genders have a quite identical way of representing their experiences. Both groups use a lot of Material, Mental and Relational-Attributive processes. The domination of these processes is high likely to be influenced by the social function and generic structure of Recount texts. Thus, in terms of process types, instead of gender, the genre has more influence on how students represent their experiences.

Abstract

Students often get nervous when they have to speak up in English in front of people. This situation also happens in reading aloud subjects at one of the private universities in Bandung. Most of the students are not confident to do public speaking in English. It is related to the students’ pronunciation, intonation, pace, and filler. In line with technological development, the Orai application can be an alternative way of teaching reading aloud. This research focuses on how the Orai application can help the students to be able to speak in English confidently and loudly in the class. This research employed a quantitative design by using classroom action research (CAR). The data collections of the research were pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The result of the study shows that the Orai application improved student performances in reading aloud subjects.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the challenges faced by EFL teachers in developing students’ 4C skills (Critical thinking, Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration) in 21st-century education., followed by four English teachers in different Junior High schools in Garut (two public schools and two private schools). To fulfill this objective, a qualitative case study design with a semi-structured interview as the research instruments were employed. The result revealed that both EFL teachers of public and private schools in junior high school had similar problems in developing students' 4C skills in 21-st century education. Those challenges include the difficulties in understanding certain effective methods of learning that support the development of 4C skills, the obstacles in designing a lesson plan for 4C skills, the insufficiency of facilities and infrastructure, and the challenges in developing students’ confidence and activeness.

Abstract

As the significant effect of the appliance of character values in educational process, the EFL teaching and learning must be one of the medium in inculcating the points. However, the practice is still in a big question since many teachers, English teachers in particular, found the character values were hard to employed. Thus, this study focused on investigating an EFL teacher voice toward the inculcation of the character values. The participant involved in this case study was one of English teacher in tenth grade who had seventeen-year experience in teaching English. The data were collected using a semi-structured interview and document in the form of lesson plan. The result shown that, first, the teacher put the character values on the lesson plan representing the teacher follows the government’s suggestion in arranging 2013 curriculum lesson plan. Second, the teacher has a good understanding toward the importance character values as implied in teaching English. Third, the teacher prefer to use implicit strategy in inculcating the values as in line with the English material or instruction given.

Abstract

This research is a case study at an education university in Bandung. It is conducted to investigate whether post-graduate entrance tests on English competence create any backwash effect on candidate academics learning behavior and identify how the test shapes the learning experience. This research employs a case study with qualitative approach, involving 25 newly graduated bachelor degree students of five different departments of an education university in Bandung. Questionnaire is employed to gain the data. The results reveal that regarding the type of the test, post-graduate entrance test has a positive effect on candidate academics. This kind of test types leads the candidate academics to a positive language learning behavior. The candidate academics spend more time in studying and prepare the test by practicing reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar. However, the type of the test which is in the form of multiple-choice directs point of view of the learners on the tests to be negative since the test doesn’t represent the candidate academics’ skills.
