Abstract

The intent of the research is whether there is correlation between HOTS and RC. The researchs’ design is correlation design that this study was projected to give the respon of these questions,” Is there a correlation between HOTS and RC?” The participants who took part in this study are 140 students. The instruments of the research were tests which were needed to gather the data. These participants had to do two tests. The first test was the analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.The second test was literal comprehension and inference comprehension. The HOT skills Assesment was ten questions to analysis, seven questions to synthesis and eight questions to evaluation. And reading comprehension test was 12 items of multiple choices for literal comprehension and 12 items of multiple choices for inference comprehension. Total numbers of correct answer from these instruments were calculated. To get the purpose of the study, those numbers of correct answer were being correlated using Bivariate Pearson in SPSS 20.The result of the research showed the positive relationship between HOT skills and RC. The coefficient correlation is r-value .552. It means that the significant relationship between these two variables was a fair and answers the hypothesis that the Ho is rejected because the significance level is lower than 0.05 (p value 0<005) and H1 is accepted because the significance level is more than 0.05 (p value 0>005).This suggestions to other research are to increase the study in exploring sharper and deeper concerning with teaching and assessing methodology in senior high school since critical thinking has been given in high school curricula. Moreover, the study also suggests to further research to not only verify the theory that has been known but also to conduct introspective study and to develop study in investigating and exploring factors of how the students can be critical thinkers and how teacher guides students to be critical thinkers, also improve book which include critical thinker.Keywords:  HOTS, Critical Thinking and RC

Abstract

The pandemic era has brought changes to every aspect, including the education sector. Distance learning is a role model that is currently used in carrying out teaching and learning activities (KBM). Moodle is present as one of the platforms of choice in facilitating the distance learning process. This study aims to describe students' perception of the use of Moodle in English Language Teaching during covid-19 at the Islamic Institute of Abdullah Faqih Gresik. This study used descriptive quantitative with survey method. Data collection using a questionnaire. Data validation of this study is used SPSS 24. Meanwhile, data analysis is used descriptive statistical analysis by looking for the average data (mean). Subjects in this study are 130 students that are divided into 2nd, 4th, and 6th semesters of the Islamic Insititute of Abdullah Faqih. The result of this study showed that the sub-statement on the ease of usage, the overall average is 3.76 with high rank; sub-statement on Perceived Usefulness, the overall average 3.74 with high rank; sub-statement on communication and interaction, the overall average 3.58 with high rank; sub-on statements Students’ Satisfaction shows average 3.82 with high rank. The researcher also found another finding of several main points that can be taken from student receptions on the application of Moodle in learning English. In general, the student's response to the application of this model is quite good.

Abstract

Abstract: This study is to describe how Online Group Discussion can improve the seventh-grade students` writing skill in descriptive text. This study was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) in two cycles process starting from making lesson plan, implementation, observation, and reflection. The quantitative data were obtained from the test and questionnaire; the qualitative data ware obtained from observation of the teaching and learning process, the students’ answers, and the researcher’s field-notes. After the implementation of the plan in cycle 2, the criteria of success were fulfilled. The mean score is 77.2 better than first test, 75.8. it means that the writing descriptive text of the students in the seventh grade students at SMPN 15 Malang improve. Based on these results, it is recommended that teachers apply online group discussion in teaching descriptive text. Key words: Writing Skill, Descriptive Text, Online Group Discussion

Abstract

The aim of this study is to developing a WebQuest for teaching writing recount text to the tenth graders. This product using Research and Development (R&D) adapted from Hyland (2013) which consist of need an analysis, product development, expert validation, first revision, product tryout, second revision and final product. This product was validating by a lecture of English Department in Brawijaya University and an English teacher of MA Bilingual Batu. The WebQuest was create by using google site and divided into seven sections such as introduction task, process, evaluation, conclusion, resources, and teacher page. The result showed that this product of WebQuest was suitable for teaching writing recount text.

Abstract

The purposes of this study, were to find out the perceptions of secondary school students toward the use of platforms in online learning and the most effective one during Covid-19 outbreak. Descriptive quantitative research design was used to collect the data. The subjects were one hundred and twenty-four students of Senior High School One Kraksaan. The data was gathered through a questionnaire, an interview, and documentation. Students have positive perspectives of the effective platform used in online learning during the Covid-19 outbreak, based on the current research. The majority of students agree that the platform used for online learning during the Covid-19 outbreak was beneficial.While, students’ perception on the most effective platform are, Google meet and zoom. They think that learning through a video is much more effective rather than just providing learning material through Google Classroom, for example if there is a learning material, they don’t understand they can ask their teacher immediately, besides that Google form and quizizz are considered as the most simple and practical one, Since, they do not need to use paper in taking exams. It also creates a new learning environment, ensuring that kids are not bored while doing the tasks provided by the platforms. Keyword: Students Perceptions’, Effective Platform, Online learning, Covid-19 outbreak.

Abstract

This research is aimed to (1) explain what experiences of learning English speaking have been important to the participant; (2) to explain how the experiences construct the participant’s Speaking Skills in EFL context; and (3) to explain what can be learnt from the experiences of this learning English speaking. To conduct this research, the researcher use narrative inquiry, to understand the lived experience of an individual. A participant, named Karjo (pseudonym), participates in this research. He is willing to re-tell his lived experiences as studying at an English course institution in Pare, Kediri, East Java. To collect the data, the researcher uses semi structured (open-ended questions) interview. The data gathered, then, are analized through Clandinin and Huber (2010) way.The results show that, firstly, there are some of the participant’s experiences that are important in constructing his understanding about learning speaking strategies. The second, it is found that the participant used some strategies proposed by Oxford (1990) in learning speaking skills. The startegies include direct and indirect strategies. Direct strategies which are used by the participant are memory, cognitive and compensation strategies. Then, indirect strategies which he used are affective and social strategies. Key Words: language learning strategies, speaking, narrative inquiry

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic has made all activities of the community very limited. Teaching and learning activities in schools must also be carried out by distance learning. Thus, this research aims to dig deeper information about how distance learning of English is carried out at MISS National Plus Elementary School Malang. In addition, researchers are also looking for supporting factors and inhibiting factors for the implementation of teaching and learning English through distance learning during Covid-19 pandemic. This research is a case study conducted at MISS National Plus Elementary School Malang with a qualitative research design. This is due to the MISS National Plus Elementary School is a elementary school level which use dual curriculum, those are K13 and Cambridge Curriculum. So, English is the everyday language used in schools in formal or informal contexts. The subject of this research is a grade 1 English teacher. Qualitative research instrument is the researcher himself because the researcher has full authority in collecting and analyzing data. So that, researcher collects the data trhough observation and interview. The result of this research is a description of how the implementation of English teaching through distance learning at MISS National Plus Elementary School, supporting factors and inhibiting factors for the implementation of these activities.Keywords: Covid-19 Pandemic, Teaching English as Foreign Language, Distance Learning

Abstract

The purpose of this study were to determine the efficiency of the zoom cloud meeting application in online learning as an alternative solution in the era of the Covid-19 pandemic. The subjects of this study were thirty of English students of the fourth, sixth, and eighth semester at University of Islam Malang. The research was qualitative research. The data collection technique was carried out by giving questionnaires through Google Form and interviews using WhatsApp to thirty students at the Islamic University of Malang. The data were analyzed and interpreted through qualitative procedure. The findings indicate that the students have positive perceptions about the efficiency of the use of Zoom Cloud Meeting Application as an alternative solution in online learning in the pandemic Covid-19. The results of this study indicate that the use of the Zoom Cloud Meeting application makes it easy for teachers and learners to be able to do face-to-face learning. although learning is done online and all users are in different places.

Abstract

Vocabulary is the basic language element, which has crucial role in language learning. Whereas the book is mostly in English, some students get difficulties in mastering vocabulary.  This research aims to know the kinds of students’ obstacles in mastering vocabulary. This research is descriptive qualitative which explains the phenomena systematically, factually and accurately by interview and observation. The subject are eleventh grade students at SMK Al-Imam Jember. The result is explained in the form of describing words, and it is presented in narrative. Based on the result, the students of SMK Al Imam Jember had six obstacles in mastering vocabulary and seven causes the students’ difficulties in mastering vocabulary. Moreover, students’ learning could be affected by internal and external factor. Internal factor consist of physic and psychological aspect. While for external factor, consists of social environment and nonsocial environment. Those factors caused by the students rarely use English as mean of communication and never write and learn new vocabulary during learning or in their daily activities.
