Abstract

Many plays in Japanese occupation period (1942—1945) were full of propaganda of Japanese Military Government that tried to influence Indonesian people to assist Japanese troops in fighting American army in World War II. Literature was used as a proper propaganda tool, especially plays, where people could get the message directly about what they should do in war situation. A lot of artists were gathered by the Propaganda Service Office (Sendenbu) to work on their fields of creativity (music, sculpture, literature, drama, painting) in order to encourage Indonesian people to participate in the war. Some playwrights such as Usmar Ismail, El Hakim. Armijn Pane, Soetomo Djauhar Arifin, and Merayu Sukma enthusiastically welcomed the program. They wrote many plays that were played by various drama groups that sprang up in that period.

Abstract

This article takes as its starting point the early observation that describes the vastness of the research corpus on the cultural history of Indonesia. The vastness of this corpus is, among other things, contributed to by the writings of Western scholars. Among those that are considered classics and frequently used as important references are De HindoeJavaansche Tijd by N.J. Krom (1950), Nusantara: A History of Indonesia by Bernard H.M. Vlekke (1959), and Indonesia: Trade and Society by J.C. Van Leur (1955). Initial readings find that these Western scholars’ writings often raise the question of the role and contribution of Hinduism and Islam in Indonesia. This draws attention to their views and standpoint as Westerners on the history of Indonesian culture, especially in the context of comparison between Hinduism and Islam. This article is written with the purpose of discussing the role and contribution of Islam and Hinduism in the history of Indonesia according to the perspective of three Western scholars, namely N.J. Krom, Bernard H.M. Vlekke and J.C. Van Leur in the writings mentioned above. This discussion finds that these writings studied are more inclined to acknowledge the significance of the role and contribution of Hinduism in the history of Indonesian culture, with the presence of Islam said to have not reduced the influence of Hinduism.

Abstract

Relationship between corporation and local community in mining and oil industry in Indonesia has changed significantly since political reform (1998) and the enactment of regional autonomy (1999 and 2004). Social conflicts arouse as main symptom of such changes, that almost all corporations had common problems in their relationship with local communities. Based on previous studies, the anatomy of conflicts can be elaborated into three dimensions: causes, dynamics and resolution of conflict. Cause of conflict includes variables of political reform, inequality, exploitation, domination, empowerment, demographic and economic pressure; dimension of dynamics includes variables of fluctuation, escalation and type of conflict, role of actor and institution, and local cultural characteristics; and dimension of resolution consist of variables of old and new social contracts. With this framework this study analyses empirically the conflict between corporation and local community in Kecamatan Pangalengan, Kabupaten Bandung, West Java. The results indicate that there is a pattern of significance of causes, dynamics and resolution of conflicts, which is in general reveals a relation among dimensions of conflict.

Abstract

Leadership which has been well-known and applied in times is actually a manifestation of paradigm of ‘the chairperson leadership’ or ‘person leadership’. Research shows that this paradigm implies several of weaknesses which the organizations themselves are less aware of. This weaknesses have made and will cause many losses, such as crisis in personality, social humanity, economy, culture, and environment. The fundamental weakness –linked to others– is the person centered characteristic which empowers the chairperson to be the last one to judge in decision making.
