Abstract

Many plays in Japanese occupation period (1942—1945) were full of propaganda of Japanese Military Government that tried to influence Indonesian people to assist Japanese troops in fighting American army in World War II. Literature was used as a proper propaganda tool, especially plays, where people could get the message directly about what they should do in war situation. A lot of artists were gathered by the Propaganda Service Office (Sendenbu) to work on their fields of creativity (music, sculpture, literature, drama, painting) in order to encourage Indonesian people to participate in the war. Some playwrights such as Usmar Ismail, El Hakim. Armijn Pane, Soetomo Djauhar Arifin, and Merayu Sukma enthusiastically welcomed the program. They wrote many plays that were played by various drama groups that sprang up in that period.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the hidden narrative in the slametan of the ulur-ulur ritual at Telaga Buret, Sawo Village, Campurdarat District, Tulungagung Regency. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, the long sequences of ulur-ulur rituals were summarized by only conducting slametan. This indicates that the main foundation of the ulur-ulur ritual is slametan. To find the core ideology of slametan, this study employed the ethnographic approach. Data were obtained through participatory research and in-depth interview. The collected data were then transcribed and analyzed using related theories. This research shows that in slametan, syncretic narratives are beautifully woven into the ritual. An assortment of narratives from Islam and other religions or beliefs is represented in the offerings served during the ritual. Each offering is addressed specifically to a particular supernatural entity through ujub. This harmonious assortment shows that the Javanese people have a high degree of adaptability when it comes to adjusting their religious practices to inevitable social changes.

Abstract

Discussions about Islamic women have been buzzing in Indonesia after the collapse of the New Order. Its presence directly contradicts the narratives of women that were influenced by western thought, such as liberalism and secularism, as well as by global islamization movement from the Middle East. The conflicts that arose were about the role of women in the public sphere, women's independence, women's bodies and sexuality. This study aims to find similarities between ideas about Islamic women and the practice of Islamic women's discourse in Indonesian society. This study uses an intrinsic study method and a sociology of literature approach to reveal the relationship of the text to social conditions in society. The result shows that the depiction of Islamic women in the four texts is the same as the practice of Islamic women's discourse that existed in Islamic societies even before Indonesia's independence. It is considered as a writing-back movement by Habiburrahman El Shirazy to propagate the majority version of Islamic values in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This article explores the text structure of Kanekes (Baduy) carita pantun, focusing on the presence of rajah, previously understood as the beginning and end of the text (functioning as 'prayers and supplications' to the ancestors). Through analysis of documentation from J.J. Meijer (1891), Wim van Zanten (1977), as well as recent fieldwork (2022-2023), it was found that the rajah was not always in this position. This research uses an ethnographic approach and was conducted in August-October 2022 and September-October 2023 in Kanekes, Leuwidamar, Banten. Nine informants who work as pemantun and responders were recruited. Data were obtained through interview and recording techniques in three agrarian rituals (rice planting, house inauguration, and marriage). Based on the field data, it is found that the text of Baduy carita pantun in the three rituals has a unique different structure, with the pasaduan element not at the beginning and end, but after bangbalikan/usualan. In addition, panunda (intermediary) repetition also plays an important role. This finding challenges previous views and shows the complexity of the Baduy carita pantuntext structure that is different from other Sunda Tatar regions. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of the patterns of carita pantun in Baduy community based on field data and carita pantun texts that have been collected by previous researchers (Pleyte, Zanten, and Rosidi); knowledge about the aspects of preserving intangible cultural heritage among the Baduy (Kanekes) community which can be illustrated through agricultural ritual activities routinely carried out; and this study illustrates the current condition of carita pantun in Baduy (Kanekes) in the midst of cultural changes in the supporting community.
