Abstract

This study examines Kutika Ugi’ Sakke Rupa as a system of signs within Bugis culture by applying Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework of denotation, connotation, and myth. Using a qualitative method, this research is conducted as cultural text analysis based on library research, with the kutika manuscript written in Lontara script as the primary data. The findings show that, at the denotative level, kutika functions as a practical guide for determining auspicious and inauspicious times; at the connotative level, it reflects Bugis cosmological values emphasizing prudence and harmony with nature; and at the level of myth, it reinforces Bugis spiritual identity. This study contributes to existing scholarship by demonstrating that kutika operates not merely as a traditional calendar but as a cultural sign system that can be understood from the perspective of Islamic communication as a form of ‘urf ṣaḥīḥ, as long as it is not believed to determine destiny absolutely.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of ta'awun, or long-helping, in the film Kukira Kau Rumah by Umay Shahab through Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis. This film was chosen because it raises the issue of mental health and social relationships that are full of values of empathy and caring. The aim of this study is to find out how the value of ta'awun is represented through visual and verbal signs that appear in various film scenes. The method used is a descriptive qualitative method with semiotic analysis techniques, which include three main elements: icons, indices, and symbols. The results of the study show that icons appear in facial expressions, gestures, and actions of characters that represent empathy and support. The index is seen through the character's actions, which arise from a sense of care and a desire to help. The symbol reflects a broader moral meaning as a form of mutual assistance in emotional and social aspects. As a form of novelty, this study shows that the representation of ta'awun in films extends beyond concrete assistance to include affective dimensions such as empathy, attention, and psychological strengthening, thereby enriching the perspective of Islamic communication studies through film media. In conclusion, the film Kukira Kau Rumah not only explores psychological issues but also emphasizes the importance of human values and empathy between individuals as a tangible manifestation of ta'awun in everyday life.

Abstract

This study analyzes the strategic communication approach in the implementation of the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) program in Parepare City. ETLE was introduced as a digital-based traffic law enforcement system to increase transparency, efficiency, and community discipline through automated surveillance and ticketing. The effectiveness of ETLE, however, is highly influenced by how the program is communicated to the public. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were obtained through interviews with traffic officers and community members, non-participant observation, and documentation analysis. The findings reveal that the Parepare Traffic Police employ a multi-channel communication model that integrates interpersonal communication, digital media campaigns, and stakeholder-based socialization. This strategy positively affects public understanding and compliance, although several challenges persist, including misconceptions about ETLE, limited digital literacy among certain age groups, and inconsistent dissemination of information. The study concludes that ETLE success requires not only technological readiness but also a strategic, targeted, and participatory communication approach. Strengthening collaboration between law enforcement institutions, local government, media, and community leaders is recommended to optimize law compliance and improve acceptance of digital policing.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of da'wah management by the Nahdlatul Ulama Branch Leadership (PCNU) of Bone Regency from the perspective of Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Theory. This study is motivated by the need for da'wah organizations to adapt to social dynamics and technological developments in the modern era. The novelty of this research lies in the examination of da'wah management based on situational leadership at the branch level of a religious organization through a local contextual approach, which is still rarely studied. This study uses a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving five informants consisting of the chairman, secretary, and administrators of PCNU Bone Regency. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, with validity tested through source triangulation. The results of the study show that the functions of da'wah management planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating are applied systematically through structural and cultural channels. The implementation of situational leadership is reflected in the flexibility of leadership styles adjusted to the conditions and readiness levels of members. This study contributes to strengthening the da'wah management model based on situational leadership as a strategy for managing local-level da'wah organizations in an adaptive and contextual manner.

Abstract

This study examines Thomas Carlyle’s defense of Prophet Muhammad SAW as articulated in his lecture On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History (1840). At a time when Western society was dominated by negative stereotypes and prejudice against Islam, Carlyle presented a counter-narrative by portraying Prophet Muhammad SAW as a sincere, moral, and heroic figure. Using a qualitative approach with Critical Discourse Analysis based on Norman Fairclough’s model, this research analyzes the text at three levels: textual representation, discursive practice, and social practice. The findings reveal that Carlyle’s discourse challenges dominant Western narratives by reconstructing the image of Prophet Muhammad SAW through ethical leadership, spiritual authenticity, and historical legitimacy. From the perspective of da’wah communication, Carlyle’s discourse functions as a form of intellectual mediation that promotes intercultural understanding and counters Islamophobic narratives. This study contributes to the field of Islamic communication by highlighting the role of intellectual discourse as an alternative medium of da’wah in shaping public perception and fostering cross-cultural dialogue.

Abstract

This article examines how President Joko Widodo’s political communication model responded to and managed religious sentiment during the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study analyzes selected posts from President Jokowi’s official Instagram account using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework, which emphasizes the dimensions of text, discursive practice, and social practice. The findings reveal that the intersection of politics and religion in the context of pandemic governance generated significant resistance from segments of religious communities, manifested in distrust of Covid-19 information, vaccine rejection, conspiracy narratives, and opposition to burial procedures following health protocols. In response, the Jokowi administration strategically incorporated religious language, symbols, and institutional religious authority, such as references to the Indonesian Ulama Council and the notion of halal vaccines, into its communication strategy. This approach sought to align public health policies with dominant religious values in Indonesian society. The study demonstrates that religious discourse functioned as an instrument of symbolic power to stabilize public opinion and increase compliance with state policies. Contributes to political communication scholarship by showing how religious instrumentalization can function as a pragmatic crisis communication strategy in a democratic yet highly faith-oriented society.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital media has transformed polit ical communication, particularly in local elections where social media function not only as channels of information but also as spaces for constructing political narratives and voter engagement. This study analyzes the digital political communication strategy of the MULIA candidate pair Munafri Arifuddin and Aliyah Mustika Ilham through Instagram during the Makassar mayoral election. Using a qualitative approach, this research applies critical discourse analysis developed by Norman Fairclough combined with agenda-setting theory from Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw. Data were collected through digital observation, documentation of campaign materials, and interviews with the campaign media team. A total of 419 Instagram posts published during the campaign period were analyzed to identify patterns of issue framing, political image construction, and digital campaign strategies. The findings show that the campaign implemented structured communication strategies including strategic issue selection, agenda setting, political marketing stages (awareness, likeability, and electability), and emotional branding through Hero and Caregiver archetypes. Instagram functioned not merely as a dissemination tool but as a discursive arena where political identity, legitimacy, and emotional connections with voters were constructed. The study highlights the growing importance of digital political communication in shaping public perception and influencing electoral participation in local democratic contests.

Abstract

This theoretical-conceptual article critically addresses the discursive construction of religious events, aiming to establish the conceptual factors for the construction of specialized journalistic discourse on religious events as a factual expression of the religiosity phenomenon. Unlike empirical approaches, this study undertakes a systematic bibliographic-documentary review and a discursive-functional analysis of the foundational literature. The research deconstructs the epistemological, methodological, and socio-contextual-referential statutes that underlie this type of specialized press discourse. The synthesis procedure results in a terminological and conceptual definition of categories with wide theoretical dispersion, the articulation of a specific multi-level analytical methodology, and a revision of the socio-contextual-referential apparatus within context models. The main contribution is an integrated pent dimensional analytical framework that overcomes linear models by incorporating factual and contextual dimensions specific to the religious event, thus establishing a new theoretical standard for the analysis of specialized journalistic discourse on religion, exportable to ideologically mediated contexts.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the role of religious broadcasting radio in shaping socio-religious relations thru the communication process between the broadcaster and the listeners. Radio An-Nashihah Sakinah with Sunnah was chosen as the research object because it consistently promotes the value of silaturahim in its broadcasting strategy. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with library study and observation methods on the broadcasting programs of Radio An-Nashihah. The observations were conducted in real time during broadcasts over a two-month period, focusing on the interactions between the host, guests, and listeners in programs on religious counseling, family issues, and Quranic recitation. The analysis is conducted using a communication sociology perspective to see how the value of silaturahim is practiced in da'wah communication interactions thru radio media. The research results show that Radio An-Nashihah implements the value of silaturahim thru program planning oriented toward audience needs, human resource management according to competence, and the presentation of interactive programs such as religious consultations, family studies, and Quranic learning. The dialogical and participatory communication pattern allows for emotional closeness between the broadcaster and the listeners, thereby forming social relationships that are spiritual and communal in nature. Thus, radio not only functions as a medium for conveying religious information but also as a space for social communication that strengthens Islamic brotherhood within the community. This research shows that radio media can be an effective means of preaching in building social relations based on Islamic values in the digital communication era.

Abstract

This study examines how pappaseng, ancestral Bugis moral advice are transmitted through family communication and how such processes shape the ideal character of Bugis women. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the research integrates textual analysis of lontaraq pappaseng manuscripts with interviews and participant observation among culturally embedded informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed through thematic coding, symbolic interactionist micro-analysis, and discourse-narrative synthesis to identify dominant moral themes and communicative mechanisms. The findings reveal that pappaseng messages directed toward women emphasize honor (siri’), loyalty, domestic responsibility, moral self-discipline, and relational intelligence. These values are transmitted through a triadic mechanism: verbal advice, narrative reinforcement through proverbs and storytelling, and behavioral modeling by parents and extended kin. Family discourse functions as a dynamic arena of meaning-making in which daughters internalize, negotiate, and occasionally reinterpret inherited norms. While vertical parent-to-child transmission remains dominant, horizontal and oblique channels, as well as digital and educational influences, recalibrate but do not eliminate indigenous ethical continuity. The study demonstrates that pappaseng operates as a living symbolic system reproduced through interpersonal communication rather than as static textual heritage. By integrating symbolic interactionism and social learning theory within an indigenous framework, this research contributes to intercultural communication and character education scholarship and offers a family-centered model for revitalizing local wisdom in contemporary contexts.
