Abstract

This article is a qualitative-descriptive study which employs which concern the existing phenomenon underlying in the translation of Qur'anic verses that are generally interpreted as a means for legitimizing the acts of terrorism by radical Islamists. The integration on the linguistic knowledge of Islamic texts has been studied as a process of incorporating new information into the existing knowledge with an interdisciplinary approach. The importance of language in the multitude of learning and the discipline of science has led to its status as a condition for correct understanding of the Qur'anic messages. This study used Fairclough’s intertextual approach on the potentially abused Qur’anic verses for violence acts in the name of Islam by extremist groups such ISIS. Two patterns of understanding Islamic texts become the spectrum of how the teachings of Islam are fairly understood. Linguistic provides general criticism toward the radicals’ interpretations in understanding the Islamic sources (primarily the Qur’anic verses). Then the study ends up with an argument that the radicalism in many groups in Islam is connected with the reality of Islamic sources which essentially needs to be interpreted in the context of Islamic societies and requires dynamic reading and prospective production on the meanings of a sacred text. Abstract

Western theories tend to view the essence of humans in a way of a blank state (tabula rasa), wherein their development will be affected by environmental factors as the determinant variable. However, there are a few differences in the portrayal of humans if scrutinized from al-Qur’an. With conducting a library study, the present study sought to scrutinize the essence of humans along with the affiliated dimensions according to the Qur’anic perspective. The current study drew a conclusion that humans are composed of physical (with the overall physical power therein), psychological, and spiritual dimensions. Humans were born with their inborn good trait alongside the naturally inherent elements such as soul and the active as well as responsive supports from environments so that the two elements as such will construct humans’ behavior. Even though environments will not entirely construct humans’ behavior as commonly targeted by education, the inborn potencies cannot develop automatically without being simultaneously promoted by good and conducive environments in addition to effective education. The foregoing is due to the responsive trait of humans.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the Pesantren’s response to the use of digital applications of classical books as open sources of education. Starting from the phenomenon of using al-maktabah sya> milah software in Pesantren Salaf (traditional Islamic boarding schools) where they have a scientific tradition of using printed Kitab Kuning (Islamic classical books) for quite a long time. The presence of a digital media transformation called al-maktabah sya>milah is an alternative for searching information on classical books in Pesantrens. Then, this article questions on the emergence of al-maktabah syu> mila NU fi>ha software at the Pesantren Assalafiyyah, Mlangi, Sleman, Yogyakarta in response to the presence of al-maktabah sya>milah. Syu>mila NU containing digital books by mu'tabar ulama taught in Pesantren Salaf, while Syamilah containing books by Arabic ulama allegedly carrying Wahhabi understanding. This has led to a contestation between the two Kitab Kuning digital applications in the Pesantren Salaf. Maktabah syu> mila NU fi>ha software development is defensive which aims to fortify the Pesantren from the influence of the syamilah maktabah understanding which brings Wahhabi; a intolerant, apolitical, anti-tradition, and transnational understanding. The presence of this application appeared various responses from the pesantrens. Pesantren Hidayatul Mubtadi'in Lirboyo, Kediri tends to be skeptical whether Pesantren Assalafiyyah Mlangi, Yogyakarta is more neutral, and Pesantren Salafiyyah Syafi’iyyah Sukorejo, Situbondo tends to be moderate and optimistic. This response is inseparable from the pesantren policy which is contained in the board’s rules for the use of electronic devices.
