Abstract

Humidity Dependence of Optical Properties of Gelatin Films. Humidity dependence of optical properties of gelatin films prepared by casting technique has been investigated. Gelatin films was investigated its optical properties to varied humidity condition. Optical responses investigated are optical transmission and absorption at visible light spectrum measured utilizing a UV-Vis (Ultraviolet – Visible) spectrophotometer. The results of optical transmittance and absorbance obtained shows an optical response of gelatin films in widely visible light spectrum within range 530 – 680 nm, with most clearly response in a spectrum band in 580 – 650 nm. Different humidity treatment cause a significantly change of optical characteristics, that is the transmittance and absorbance change in to humidity. Transmittance of gelatin films increase with increasing humidity in a range 580 – 650 nm, in contrast with absorbance that is decrease with increasing humidity. Plot of transmission and absorption intensity with varied humidity from 37%RH to 99%RH at 610 nm exhibited a good linearity. Two samples showed same characteristics

Abstract

Production of beta-1,3 glucan from Agrobacterium and its wound healing activity on white rat. The objective of this study was to determine the activity of beta-1,3 glucan product extracted from local Agrobacterium sp Bro 1.2.1, both wild-type and mutant-type, on opened-wound healing process. Beta-1,3 glucan product was extracted by precipitation, and the purification was carried out by column chromatography as KCl gradient fractions. In this study, white Sprague Dawley rats were employed, and have been treated for opened-wound condition. Seven groups were performed in this experiment, i.e. the negative control, the positive control employing povidone iodine, the two groups of two commercial beta-1,3 glucan with 0,02 mg/4 cm2 each, and the last three groups of beta-1,3 glucan as the test group with 0,02 mg/4 cm2, 0,10 mg/4 cm2 and 0,50 mg/4 cm2, respectively. The result showed significant differences of wound-healing activity performing statistical analysis of the least significance between the negative control, the positive control, as well as the highest dose of the test group of beta-1,3 glucan, at the dose of 0,5 mg/4 cm2 (p<0.05).

Abstract

Echinoderm Biodiversity in the Takofi Coastal Waters, Moti Island, North Maluku. A total of 22 echinoderm species were found in Takofi waters, North Maluku. They were represented by 6 species of holothuroidea, 4 species of asteroidea, 5 species of echinoidea and 7 species of ophiuroidea. The Ophiuroidea were relatively common in seagrass area. The quantitative analysis on the abundance data revealed the highest diversity index of faunal assemblage at station II (H’=1.19). The highest evenness index was exhibited by the echinoderms from station III (J = 0.99), while the highest species richness was represented by them from station I (D = 1.22).

Abstract

Heavy Metallic Element Distribution in Cisadane River Estuary’s Water and Sediment. Observation of heavy metallic elements in Cisadane River Estuary has been done in July and November 2005. The results show that heavy metallic elements content in seawater is lower and still below the treshold value stated by government for fisheries. There was an indication of heavy metallic elements on sediment. Distribution of Pb on July and of Cu on November 2005 were found higher near the coast and decrease towards the sea, and commonly were found in front of estuary such as Cisadane, Muara Saban and Tanjung Pasir. High Pb and Zn distributions on November 2005 were found only in front of Cisadane estuary. Cd distribution of Cisadane estuary was constant at all station but did not show any correlation with the distance of station and estuary. The Cd content on July and November 2005 is lower than 0,001 ppm. Generally, heavy metallic elements content have a uniform distribution at all stations inspite of its distance to estuary

Abstract

The Influence of Polymerization Condition to Optical Properties of Poly-o-toludine Films for PH Sensor Application. Properties of poly-o-toludine film strongly bonded to non polar substrate was studied for application as optical pH sensor. Characterization of film in various pH value is carried out by recording absorbance curve using uv-visible spectrophotometer. All poly-o-toluidine film was then found to be applicable as optical pH sensor in the pH range of 2.0- 6.0. Further computational processing by means of curve fitting into logaritmic trend will allow expansion of measurement to the pH range of 2.0-8.0. Sensitivity of pH response was highest in poly-o-toluidine film fabricate at HCl 1.0 M and at 12 hours of dipping time. This paper also studied hysteresis effect in pH response. It was concluded that poly-o-toluidine salt exposed to basic pH will not be easily regenerated. For this reason, poly-o-toluidine film will only be suitable for single usage of pH measurement.

Abstract

O-toluidine Polymerization in Aqueous Phase and Its Development to Produce In Situ Poly-o-toluidine Films. Polymerization parameters of aqueous phase which have an effect to polymer film were studied in order to establish indirect control of film fabrication by means of controlling the parameters of aqueous phase. Among the parameters studied are the concentration of HCl, APS/o-toluidine ratio, polymerization duration, and temperature. HCl concentration was found to be optimum at the excess value of 1.0M, whereas ratio of APS/o-toluidine at 1.25. Polymerization duration was found of having an effect to both stability and thickness. As a rule, longer duration of polymerization leads to a thicker and more stablized polymer film. Temperature was found to be a parameter that have a defining role in the control of film thickness. Despite of the rather semi quantitative nature of the data, the results show a clear indication that indirect control is possible for in situ method of o-toluidin film fabrication.
