Abstract

Discipline and interest are aspects of parenting that affect children’s behavior and academic performance. This study explores the parents’ disciplinary strategies to promote children’s learning interests. The researchers conducted this study due to society’s issue and observation that elementary pupils have a low interest in learning and manifested inappropriate behaviors inside and outside the classroom. The participants were the ten selected parents with children enrolled in 5th Grade in one of the private Catholic elementary schools in Pagadian City, Philippines. A single case study was utilized. It was found that parents experienced challenges in disciplining their children to promote learning interests due to different kinds of behaviors that the children manifest. The participants identified the following behaviors: Too Much Screen Time in Playing Mobile Games and Being Disrespectful. Despite the challenges they have encountered, they were able to overcome those by implementing positive discipline, offering the problem to God, and effective communication to build good relationships with their children. It is important to be gentle and firm in implementing discipline to promote the learning interest of the pupils. Positive discipline inside the classroom allows the pupils to develop skills of responsibility, resiliency, and proper behavior with the use of positive and negative reinforcements that will motivate them to be interested in learning and excel academically.

Abstract

Prospective teachers usually conduct classroom demonstrations during a teaching internship for one semester. Thus, teaching interns then perform actual teaching among students at varying grade levels. This study investigated the challenges and coping strategies of BEED teaching interns in the western part of the Philippines. In this study, the researchers employed a single-case study model method of Sharan B. Merriam. Triangulation of data was also employed to validate the results of the study. They gathered the data through one-to-one interviews with BEED teaching interns who conducted classroom demonstrations on-campus and off-campus, four corresponding cooperating teachers, and the instructor of the research participants. Following the data analysis of Braun and Clarke (2008), the results revealed that these teaching interns experienced different challenges. These challenges involved difficulty in classroom management and difficulty in creating learning objectives. However, they showed positivity in their performance and applied the right coping strategies to lessen their burden. Among these coping strategies were using effective classroom management strategies, being confident, and asking assistance from their cooperating teacher to cope with those challenges. Through these experiences, teachers learned to adjust and cope with their challenges. Thus, they became better teaching interns. These findings are original and contribute to the plans and programs of the Commission of Higher Education in broadening the knowledge and developing the skills for improving student teacher’s academic success.

Abstract

The fashion industry has prospects and it can help to project the economy to compete with the international market. However, the extent of gender imbalance emerging from the Fashion Department of Kumasi Technical University is becoming a threat to the future of the industry. This paper is aimed at creating awareness of the extent of gender imbalance and promoting the inclusion of more male fashion students in fashion institutions. This was achieved by conducting an analysis of gender performance in Creative fashion design processes. The study employed educational Design and Quantitative research methods with a descriptive style of analysis. With a sample size of n=191, a structured questionnaire was distributed to participants on different occasions during class hours to gather relevant data for the study. The results showed that, though the female students were more than the male students,  the male students performed better than the female students in terms of creative fashion design processes. Most of the students were of the opinion that the famous fashion designers in history and the present day are men. Also, most of the students responded that the best fashion designers in their locality are men. The study recommends that society needs to be educated and encourage more male students to take up fashion as a career.

Abstract

Background: Deletion of items from MCQ tests or Likert type scales may be necessary due to various reasons. Methods: Considering entire data the paper gives new measures of difficulty and discriminating value of items as well as test along with their relationships including relationship with test reliability (. Discriminating value of test () and item ( are expressed as coefficient of variation (CV) of test scores and item scores respectively. Results: Non-linear relationship between and   derived. As number of persons giving correct answer to an item increases,   curve increases and  curve decreases and intersect at a point (say. Items lying outside the interval [  where SD is standard deviation of or  can be deleted. Choosing acceptance region as [] may result in discarding too few items. For Likert scale, items with high values of CV may be deleted. Relationship of reliability and discriminating values helps to find effect of such deletions. Conclusions: Proposed method of item deletions based on difficulty values and discriminating values offers significant benefits and is recommended. However, the approach may be compared with deletion of items by “alpha if the item is deleted”. Future studies suggested.

Abstract

Teenage pregnancy is a severe problem that causes drop-outs of females and decreases enrollment for the next school year. School administrators implement and extend academic support to help teenage mothers in their education. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to describe the experiences of secondary teachers in handling pregnant learners and teenage mothers for School Year 2021-2022 until SY 2022-2023. The researcher interviewed eight secondary teachers with teenage pregnant learners, and teenage mothers under their class advisory was chosen through purposive sampling. In-depth interviews, observations, and field notes were utilized in the gathering of data. Using categorical analysis of the results, the secondary teachers' practices in handling this case focused on how teachers reacted to the situation, challenges that teachers encountered, teachers-initiated ways, academic support, and teenage mothers' response to the support they extended to them. Teachers described their experiences in handling pregnancy cases from the participants' utterances: Processing of mixed emotions and concern with the long-term welfare of students. Teachers need to gain a background in counseling and students' absenteeism with late submission of learning sheets. Having In-depth Conversations, Using ICT in reaching out to students, Giving Financial and Kind Support to students, and Providing Arrangement of Supplemental Activities to Students. They were giving school supplies to students, shifting to a blended learning modality, and conducting home visits / future home visits. Positivity and Keeping Academic Interest are the expected response of teenage mothers toward the academic support extended to them. According to the results, regardless of marital status of secondary teachers, their approaches in handling teenage pregnancies and mothers varied depending on the student's situation following the same strategies and techniques applied. Positive outcomes are produced on the parts of teachers and students when school administrators provide affected students with academic support.

Abstract

The paper which examined managing education policy implementation at the secondary education level for effective practice was guided by two research questions and two hypotheses. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The population of the study consists of twenty-one (21) public secondary schools in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. The study utilized simple random sampling technique to select eleven (11) public secondary schools, from the selected schools, eleven (11) principals and thirty-five (35) teachers were picked for the study making a total of three hundred and ninety-six (396). Self-designed instrument entitled “Managing Education Policy Implementation for Effective Practice Questionnaire” (MEPIEPQ) was used to elicit information from the respondents. Validity of the instrument was ensured using expert reviews while Cronbach Alpha was used to compute its reliability which yielded an index of 0.82. Frequency counts and mean ratings were used to answer the research questions while t-test statistics was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed among others that managing education policy implementation at the secondary education level is challenged first by educational resources deficiency and concludes that one of the determinants of educational policy implementation is the provision of quality educational resources in sufficient quantity which is totally lacking in managing education policy implementation in Aguata, LGA of Anambra State. The researcher therefore recommended that the policy blue-print should be backed up with the sufficient educational resources for its implementation to enhance effective practice and functional educational delivery process.

Abstract

College students in rural areas in the Philippines were used to the traditional learning approach. The Flexible Learning (FL) though sounds enticing and inviting, was new and foreign to them.  This qualitative-phenomenological study explored the individual experiences, perspectives, and views of college students on Flexible Learning (FL) during the COVID 19. Using the non-probability sampling, the researchers purposely chosen 24 college students. The researchers used a validated and structured interview guide to obtain the data. Findings revealed that Flexible Learning offered autonomy, more family time, and entrepreneurial opportunities. However, the transition from traditional to Flexible Learning (FL) triggered much anxiety especially to those who experienced low internet access, no gadgets, unresponsive mentors, and living in far flung areas. Despite the drawbacks, students remained resilient, positive, and developed adaptive behaviors. The results imply that Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) may look into the institution’s technological capacity, students’ needs, and academic readiness before deciding to implementing Flexible Learning (FL) so that it can serve better the students.
