Abstract

Even though the problem of the relationship between faith and reason has been a very classical topic in the history of the discussion between philosophy and theology, the urgency of continuously re-discoursing on this topic remains. This article discusses the very topic based on John Paul II’s Encyclical Letter of Fides et Ratio with the argument that, although the emergency of that Letter is much more in the pastoral purposes for the establishment of the properness of the relationship of the two in Church’s ministry, this study finds that, from the philosophical perspective, this Letter implies some epistemological standpoints which one could think. Those ideas are the status of the two as the basic capacities of every human everyday searching for truth (and certainty) for living, the status of truth, certainty, and the completeness of human existence is the ultimate orientation of the epistemological operation of the two capacities, the status of everyday experiences as the basis or the foundation for thinking and some epistemological challenges and virtues which one has to (or might) consider and live by.

Abstract

For the etnic society of Manngarai, West Folres, the presence of child/baby in their family is a gift from God that must be grateful. The thanksgiving ceremony for the presence of the child is called Teing Ngasang. Teing Ngasang is a rite of giving a name to a child who born into the Manggarai people. For the name is something very valuable. Name is a representation of a person's personality. The "name" actually includes one's identity and behavior patterns. Therefore, Manggarai people always try to avoid actions or behavior that can damage their reputation. The author's focus is to look at the comparison of initiation rites as well as points of equality and difference between the ceremony of Teing Ngasang and Baptist Sacrament in the Catholic Church. In addition, the author will review the points which are donations from the Teing Ngasang ceremony in relation to the Baptist Sacrament. The findings of this comparative study are a change in the meaning of the Teing Ngasang ceremony in the light of Christian Faith. In addition, it is also known that the relations and the awareness of the Supreme Being in the lives of the Manggarai people existed long before Catholicism entered.

Abstract

Today the issue of the relationship between religion and the state is very relevant to the concrete situation in Indonesia. The polemic shows the difference marked by the phenomenon of pluralism on the one hand and the trap of privatization and the politicization of religion on the other. In this case, Driyarkara offers a paradigm of differentiation and an overreach of identity politics to pay attention to the relationship between religion and the state. Apart from that, he is questioning the extent to which the paradigm of differentiation and excess of identity politics is able to support the phenomenon of pluralization of modern society. Religion and the state need to be differentiated as two different works. However, the distinction between religion and state does not aim to displace religion into the private sphere, but rather embrace religion to be able to participate in public space and state life by playing a role as a source of public morality or civil religion.

Abstract

Celso Costantini had a Catholic Mission in China from 1922 to 1933. At the beginning he felt something wrong with the method of the Mission in China. Catholic Church had existed in China for centuries, but Celso found no local bishop nor clerics who led a Mission region. All Mission regions were led by foreign missionaries. Besides, Celso also saw antipathy against Catholic church. Catholic Church was considered as a foreign religion which wanted to conquer China. This could not be separated from political domination on Catholic Mission. Protectorate system had mixed Catholic Mission with the political interests of European countries. Catholic Mission was controlled by governments, not by the Church itself. A lot of strategic decisions of the Mission were made by the government. The local church just followed the government’s instructions. The Holy See was not involved in the process of making decisions concerning the Mission in China. As a result, Catholic Mission was almost identical to colonial politics of European countries. Celso Costantini carried out the guidance of Maximum Ilud  in his Mission in China. He realized that was in the tension between the Church’s Mission and the political interest of European countries. He understood that he was not a representative of a country, but of the Church as a religious institution. Therefore, Celso distanced himself from political interest whenever possible. He was close to the government, but he refused to be intervened. Celso tried to make Catholic Church mingle with local society so that the Church could be established and bring God’s kingdom among Chinese community. One of Celso’s efforts was the organization of Shanghai Synod in 1924. The Synod produced strategic decisions about the establishment of seminaries, the education of local local seminarians, and cultural promotion as a means of spreading faith. The Synod also had an important role in the ordination of the first six Chinese bishops in 1926 by Pope Pius XI. Celso’s Mission for eleven years in China opened a new hope of the birth of Chinese Catholic Church.
