Abstract

This study assessed the pedagogical skills, self-efficacy and content knowledge need for shorthand instructional delivery of lecturers in public tertiary institutions in Niger State, Nigeria. Three specific objectives and three research questions guided the study. Similarly, three null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study covered shorthand lecturers from sixty public tertiary institution offering shorthand in Northern Nigeria. The design for the study was descriptive survey and the population was 125 shorthand lecturers. The entire 125 shorthand lecturers were used for the study. The instrument for data collection was a 4-points structured questionnaire developed by the researcher titled “Pedagogical Skills, Self-Efficacy and Content Knowledge Need for shorthand instructional Delivery” (PSSECNSID). The instrument was validated by 4 experts. Pilot study was conducted using tertiary institutions in Osun state who were not part of the subjects. The data collected from pilot study was analyzed using Cronbach Alpha method for reliability test and reliability co-efficient of 0.70 was obtained. The instrument was administered to the target respondents using direct approach and the researcher was assisted by 18 research assistants. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study concluded that shorthand lecturers need pedagogical skills, self-efficacy and content knowledge for effective shorthand instructional delivery in public tertiary institutions in Niger State, Nigeria. Based on the findings, the study recommended, among others, that government and professional organizations should organize workshops and seminars that will improve the pedagogical skills, self-efficacy and content knowledge of shorthand lecturers in Niger State, Nigeria. Implication of these findings, among others, is that pedagogical skills need of shorthand lecturers for effective instructional delivery may not improve if training and re-training programme are not organized in public tertiary institutions offering shorthand in Niger State, Nigeria.

Abstract

The study sought to analyze the skills and techniques acquired by teacher trainees, in art related to producing IMs during teaching practice at Gambaga College of Education (GACE). The role of Instructional Materials is to glue information into learners' minds, as what is seen is understood more than what is heard. Active participation stimulates and motivates learning. The presence of well-prepared IMs in the learning environment creates room for learners to interact or explore with it and that increases the quality of knowledge acquired and broadens the horizon of mastery of knowledge. The study adopted action research and descriptive and experimental methodologies to study the skills and techniques as well as materials adopted for the production of IMs by teacher trainees at GACE. The study found that teacher trainees exhibited poor skills and techniques in the production of IMs. They also adopted materials that can easily be destroyed and in addition, limit pupils' interaction in the lesson. This, therefore, does not motivate pupils to learn.

Abstract

This study investigates how the anti-immigrant group Operation Dudula is framed and constructed in South African media discourse. Utilizing framing theory and social constructionism, content analysis was conducted on media articles published after the arrest of Operation Dudula’s leader. Findings reveal Operation Dudula resonates with citizens by blaming immigrants for unemployment, although claims about foreign workers are often misleading or exaggerated. Media frames construct Operation Dudula as either tackling unemployment or engaging in xenophobic vigilantism. While perspectives on immigrants differ, dominant frames critical of Operation Dudula may constrain its activities by challenging legitimacy. However, some political support exists for Dudula’s goals. Unfortunately, vilifying immigrants obscures systemic issues that elites failed to address. Reducing xenophobic tensions requires tackling root causes of unrest, while promoting human rights and non-discrimination. This study concludes media discourse plays a role in enabling or inhibiting the activities of vigilante groups in South Africa. Nuanced understanding of anti-immigrant framing is key to addressing this complex social issue.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether Filipinos genuinely hold negative feelings towards President Duterte’s leadership. It analyzes public opinions through existing surveys, media discussions, and socio-political group actions. Using a descriptive research approach, the study seeks to understand the diverse perspectives on Duterte’s leadership in the Philippines. It explores the reasons behind both support and criticism, taking into account factors such as economic policies, leadership style, and responses to significant events during his presidency. By uncovering the various influences on people’s opinions in a changing political and social landscape, the research aims to provide valuable insights into the complex sentiments surrounding Duterte’s leadership. Despite facing widespread criticism for his authoritarian leadership style, war on drugs, and attacks on the media, President Rodrigo Duterte maintained high levels of public support throughout his presidency. The study concludes that Duterte’s leadership has both strengths and weaknesses, with high approval ratings attributed to his perceived strength, populist messaging, and effective communication. While not universally trusted, Duterte’s ability to connect with a significant portion of the population suggests a willingness among Filipinos to support leaders who promise to address their concerns, even in the face of authoritarian measures. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights into the intricate tapestry of sentiments surrounding Duterte’s leadership, shedding light on the diverse perspectives that define the Filipino public’s stance on their president.
