MANDARINABLE: Journal of Chinese Studies

MANDARINABLE: Journal of Chinese Studies is a bi-annual journal, published in April and October. MANDARINABLE focuses on various issues spanning the Chinese Studies of language, literature, culture, and journalism. The coverage of language includes linguistics and language teaching, the area of culture includes cultural studies and social studies, and the scope of literature covers the analysis of novels, films, poems,s and dramas using the relevant theories and concepts. The journalism coverage includes digital journalism, social media, news production and consumption, journalism culture, and performance. In its first edition, MANDARINABLE was published online and printed. In each edition, MANDARINABLE has received an article openly. The article will be reviewed by internal and external editors, with at least two reviewers who have related expertise with double-blind peer review.

Abstract

The linguistic style and the readers are two vital aspects to consider in applying the literal translation of the ‘Sclerometer User Manual’. These two aspects determine the word choices and their equivalents for the translation of the text to be well perceived by the readers. The descriptive qualitative method was employed for this study with two data sources, the primary data source which was the machine manuals in Chinese and the secondary data source from the documentation. In the process of language transfer, knowledge about Sclerometer, industrial and engineering vocabularies, and understanding of the text to be translated were highly required.

Abstract

In the post-epidemic period, cultural teaching is still an important part of the process of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, as well as it is the starting point for communication and cooperation between countries and cultures. This paper discusses the current situation of the development of tea culture in China and Indonesia and explores the realization path of tea culture exchange in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and the idea of combining tea culture in teaching design.

Abstract

This research was entitled “An Analysis of Figurative languages on Teressa Teng’s Song Lyrics”. Teressa Teng was a singer from Taiwan who was highly admired in Taiwan and China. During her lifetime, Teresa had popular songs, including 甜蜜蜜 (tián mìmì), 月亮代表我的心 (yuèliàng dàibiǎo wǒ de xīn), 梅花 (méihuā), 你怎么说 (nǐ zěnme shuō), 爱人 (àirén), 我只在乎你 (wǒ zhǐ zàihū nǐ), 小城故事 (xiǎochéng gùshì), 偿还 (chánghuán),再见我的爱人 (zàijiàn wǒ de àirén), and 千言万语 (qiānyán wàn yǔ). These songs were very popular cross-year songs. Therefore, these songs were analyzed in this research. This research objective was to describe some figurative languages in the lyrics of Teressa Teng’s songs by utilizing stylistic theory and contextual semantics. The research method was a qualitative descriptive method. The research data were the lyrics of Teressa Teng’s songs. The data sources of this research were ten songs by Teressa Teng. Based on the research results, there were ten types of figurative languages in the Teressa Teng’s song lyrics, namely: Kuāzhāng 夸张, Bǐyù 比喻, Fǎnfù 反复, Jǐngcè 警策, Bǐnǐ 比拟, Fǎnwèn 反 问, Fǎnyǔ 反语, Huíhuán 回环, Dǐngzhēn 顶真, and Tònggǎn 痛感.

Abstract

In the new media era, it is more closely connected to the whole world, so Chinese culture presents a different charm. The new media provides a channel of “going in” and “going out” to Chinese culture, which has both beneficial and negative impacts. So it’s better to seize the opportunity to make good use of new media technology, to highlight the diversity and uniqueness of Chinese culture, and also to promote Chinese culture and new media colliding with a wonderful spark.

Abstract

With the deepening of cultural exchanges between countries in the world today, how to tell the "Chinese story" well and establish cultural self-confidence has become an indispensable part of China's comprehensive approach to the world. As a kind of cultural product, the effects and ways of cross-cultural dissemination of film are widely concerned by academic circles. Therefore, this paper takes the film "Nezha's Devil Child Comes into the World" as an example, analyzes the film's cultural communication advantages and difficulties, and proposes four cross-cultural communication strategies for the problems existing in the process of cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

Internet technology promotes the rapid development of the Internet education industry, and the online Chinese teaching model has therefore become a new model of international Chinese education. This paper takes overseas Chinese children as the research object, aiming at the particularity of Chinese teaching for Chinese children, combined with the author's own teaching practice, analyzes the problems existing in the online Chinese teaching process for Chinese children and puts forward relevant suggestions.
