Abstract

This study aimed to reduce post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) levels in survivors of domestic violence (DV) through a mindfulness-based intervention program modified from Brief Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (BMBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Distress Management Training. Seven female DV survivors were involved in the program, which consisted of six meetings over three weeks. The participants practiced breathing meditation, body-scan meditation, loving-kindness meditation, and sitting meditation. They also performed walking meditation, eating meditation, and mindful yoga. The study used a quasi-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design, and the author measured the participants' PTSD using the Impact of Event Scale - Revised (IES-R). The results of analysis using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test showed a significant difference in PTSD scores, with a Z value of -2.366 (p< .05), which indicates that the mindfulness-based intervention used in this study can significantly lower PTSD in domestic violence survivors. Participants experienced a reduction in intrusion (recurrence of traumatic events), avoidance (avoidance of stimuli), and hypervigilance (excessive response to stimuli).

Abstract

This single-case study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the 4M intervention in improving reading accuracy among slow learners with reading challenges. The participant in this study was an 11-year-old student, identified as a slow learner with documented difficulties in accurate reading. The single-case experimental design was employed, with data collected through observation. The 4M intervention, grounded in a behavioral approach, was administered through four key phases: 1) alphabet familiarization; 2) pre-assessment; 3) intervention; and 4) post-assessment. Visual analysis and pre- and posttests were used to assess the program’s effectiveness, with A-B graphs. The intervention reduced the participant’s task completion time—from 15 minutes, 35 seconds to 10 minutes, 23 seconds—for reading 69 concrete words on flashcards. Reading accuracy for 69 concrete words also improved, from 16 words to all 69 correctly read post-intervention.

Abstract

Interpersonal conflict, verbal abuse in the household, and demands to behave like someone else significantly impact an individual’s psychological functioning and trigger marital relationship distress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of the modified REACH counseling model in increasing forgiveness motivation in a 33-year-old woman experiencing relationship distress with her spouse. The research used a one-case pretest-posttest design and data collection was conducted using the Indonesian Transgression-Related Interpersonal Motivation Scale (The Indonesian TRIM-18). The findings showed a reduction in the dimensions of avoidance motivation and revenge motivation, decreasing from high to low categories. Likewise, the benevolence motivation dimension improved positively, from low to moderate. Qualitative data also supported the quantitative findings. These outcomes proved that the application of the modified REACH counseling model can deliver positive changes in the context of a high-conflict marital relationship, which is further discussed in the article along with implications and recommendations.

Abstract

Children with Down syndrome have cognitive limitations that affect their ability to understand social norms, including those related to sexual behavior. As they enter puberty, they begin to show sexual interest but often have no understanding of the social context, which can put them at risk of displaying inappropriate sexual behaviors. This study aimed to examine the role of a visual-based educational intervention and the token economy system in enhancing social–sexual awareness in a child with Down syndrome. It employed a quasi-experimental single-subject research design (SSRD) with an A–B type approach. The results indicate a significant reduction in inappropriate sexual behavior, facilitated by the active involvement of both teachers and parents. The use of positive reinforcement-based interventions improving the social–sexual awareness of a child with Down syndrome. These findings suggest that the intervention can be implemented as a social–sexual education strategy by teachers and parents and may serve as an evidence-based alternative intervention in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection remains a complex psychological and social challenge, particularly for women in the postpartum period. This case study aimed to illustrate the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) within the biopsychosocial framework in reducing psychological distress in an HIV-positive housewife who had been diagnosed with a depressive episode. The research design was a single-case intervention study involving a 36-year-old woman who was undergoing both antiretroviral and psychiatric treatment. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, clinical observation, and measurement using the Beck Depression Inventory. The intervention was delivered in eight sessions, focusing on mindfulness exercises, breathing awareness, cognitive restructuring, and reflective journaling. The results showed a reduction in depressive symptoms from moderate to mild, accompanied by improvements in emotional stability, self-awareness, and social functioning. The participant could resume daily activities, establish positive communication with her partner, and maintain treatment adherence. These findings suggest that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy delivered within a biopsychosocial framework can improve psychological well-being and interpersonal functioning in women living with HIV. A holistic and culturally sensitive approach is essential to support their recovery and mental resilience.

Abstract

Individuals living with HIV frequently experience elevated depressive symptoms due to chronic stress, stigma, and emotional burden. Compassion-based interventions such as Loving-Kindness and Self-Compassion Meditation (LKCM) have the potential to improve emotional well-being, yet evidence in HIV-positive populations remains limited. This study examined the preliminary effects of a brief Loving-Kindness and Self-Compassion Meditation (LKCM) intervention on depressive symptoms among individuals living with HIV. It was hypothesized that participants receiving LKCM would show greater reductions in depression than those in a control condition. Using a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest control group design, 18 participants were assigned to either an experimental group (n = 10) that received a two-session LKCM intervention or a no-treatment control group (n = 8). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the DASS-21 depression subscale before and after the intervention. The results revealed significant reductions in depressive symptoms over time in both groups, with a greater magnitude of reduction in the LKCM group; however, between-group differences did not reach statistical significance. Effect size estimates indicated a pattern of greater within-group change in the LKCM group, without supporting conclusions regarding intervention-specific benefits. These findings provide preliminary evidence that LKCM may offer short-term psychological benefits for individuals living with HIV, although definitive conclusions regarding effectiveness cannot be drawn. Larger, adequately powered trials with extended follow-up are warranted to confirm these findings and clarify the potential role of LKCM as a depression management strategy in resource-limited settings.

Abstract

The Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence at Universitas Gadjah Mada (Satgas PPKS UGM) is an ad-hoc unit responsible for preventing and responding to sexual violence within the campus environment. Since its establishment, Satgas PPKS UGM has conducted a substantial number of examinations of suspects. This study aims to describe and analyze fair and empathetic practices in examining suspects, based on a forensic psychology review of the mechanisms implemented by Satgas PPKS UGM. Using a case study design, the research examines several suspect examinations conducted by Satgas PPKS UGM. The findings show that examinations are conducted by an Examination Committee. During the process, investigative interviews with suspects follow the PEACE model (Preparation and Planning, Engage and Explain, Account, Closure, and Evaluation), as specified in the Procedures Operating Standard (POS). From a forensic psychology perspective, these stages reflect the application of procedural justice and forensic interviewing principles, enabling examinations to be neutral, fair, and empathetic while minimizing cognitive bias among committee members. The results also indicate that several suspects provided reliable information and achieved the objectives of the examination. These findings highlight the importance of integrating forensic psychology principles into suspect examination procedures, as this approach may contribute to strengthening fair, empathetic, and accountable examination practices oriented toward restorative justice within the UGM environment.
