Good quality education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their economic status. Unfortunately, often better education in Indonesia comes with a heavy price tag that eliminates working class people from accessing it. This thesis attempts to find out why the working class people are economically discriminated and how they face the discrimination. Using screenplay and young adult dystopian genre, this thesis tries to show the side effects of said economic inequality if taken to the extreme. With Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of school as cultural reproduction, the working class students, including the protagonist Thalia, are discriminated against because they are seen as threats to their resources. To reciprocate, Thalia challenges the system, which sparks a rebellion inside the school. The worldbuilding aspect of the genre is based on Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of social space, capitals, and agency. Thalia from the working class utilizes her agency to face the discrimination.

Imperfect is one of the Indonesian comedy films that has gone viral in Indonesia. It tells the story of a woman who works in a beauty company who gets different treatment because her appearance does not meet beauty standards. This research was conducted to reveal how society's attitude treats women who do not comply with beauty standards and to find out Rara's reasons for refusing to follow the beauty standards set by society. This study uses the theory of lookism and sizeism. Where patriarchal values have internalized women to participate in discriminating against Rara or women who do not follow beauty standards. The discrimination Rara received from society was discrimination against body shape, skin color and the way she appeared in public. After following the beauty standards, Rara feels uncomfortable and conflicts often occur between her and those closest to her. Rara decides to refuse to follow the standard of beauty that has been set by society with self-acceptance and seeks her happiness.

This research is conducted to find out the terms of address preferences and the role of Chineseness of two Chinese Surabayanese. What terms of address do the informants of Chinese Indonesians in Surabaya prefer to be addressed at home? Why do they prefer to be addressed that way? How do their terms of address preferences show their Chineseness as Chinese Indonesians? The research used two informants of Surabayanese Chinese Indonesians, one (male) is from the totok family and the other one (female) is from the peranakan family. Qualitative approach combined with semi-structured and open-ended interview are used. Thematic analysis is used to analyze the findings. The findings show that the family’s background played the important role in the terms of address preferences. The one from totok family still maintained Chinese terms of address, while the one from peranakan family had already abandoned the Chinese terms of address.

This thesis is created with the purpose to raise awareness in social media addiction and how it affects the people we are close with. Social media is commonly used by everyone in this modern era, but not a lot of users are aware of the danger and risk it can bring to us and social media addiction is an unhealthy reliance on online platforms. By using Erik Erikson’s psychological development theory, this thesis will explore the reasons, causes and effects on why an individual is addicted to social media. It will emphasize using the fourth, fifth, sixth as well as the final stage of Erikson’s psychological development stages to support the story building. Using modern tragedy as its genre, this thesis will show the story of Nathan and Sydney's social media addiction and how eventually the two characters end up crossing paths in the real world.

In this paper we intend to analyze the victimization of patriarchy toward two genders at the same time, male and female, that previously was only considered as a system that oppresses women due to its characteristics that put men in a more superior position. We analyze the behavior of the main characters from two Ika Natassa’s books Critical Eleven and Divortiare Trilogy that allegedly embody the patriarchal values in their behaviors on a daily basis that later could victimize them in its practice. In analyzing the books, we use the traditional Javanese patriarchy values such as 3M, kanca wingking, and benggol & bonggol. We divide the analysis into two parts. In the first part, we analyze how patriarchal ideology affects the lives of the two main female characters, Alex and Anya, where they had to keep up with the expectations of becoming the ideal traditional wife and how it put them in hard times. In the next part, we analyze how the patriarchal ideology surprisingly also affects the husbands of the main female characters. The finding shows that patriarchal ideologies surprisingly oppresses not only the wives but the husbands as well.

This research paper focuses on the impoliteness strategies employed by the employees of Karen's Diner in serving their customers. Through this research, I would like to know how Karen's Diner’s employees apply impoliteness as a strategy in communicating with their customers and why they use the impoliteness strategies. To support this research, I use the theory of impoliteness by Jonathan Culpeper (1996, 2005, 2011). In this study, I discovered that Karen's Diner employees apply impoliteness as several strategies, including by rejecting customers, by ordering customers, by warning customers, and by insulting customers. In addition, I also discovered that the employees of Karen's diner use the four impoliteness strategies to entertain their customers that can be seen from the positive reactions given by customers to the impoliteness treatments from the employees such as saying that they enjoy being at Karen's Diner, they recommend other people to visit Karen's Diner, and they will return to Karen's DIner.

This study aims to find out the problems that students experienced and strategies that students used in translating humorous text. The writer conducted this study using the theory of translation problems and strategies by Baker (2018). This writer conducted this study using a qualitative approach in which she collected and analyzed the data herself. The findings of this study support Baker’s (2018) statement that some of the problems that may appear during translation process are culture-specific concept, the source language concept is not lexicalized in the target language, the source and target language make different distinction in meaning, the target language lacks a specific term (hyponym), differences in expressive meaning, and differences in frequency and purpose of using specific forms. In addition, Text in the source language is translated in several different strategies namely translation by more general word, translation by more neutral or less expressive word, translation by paraphrase using related words, translation by paraphrase using unrelated words, translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation, and translation by omission. More studies involving other types of humor and other translation theories are recommended to create variations in this field.

Body image dissatisfaction is a heavy issue that a lot of women face, yet it lacks perspectives in the eyes of the media. Instead, the issues are more focused on younger, more adolescent girls’ point of view. This lack of depth contributes to a shallower understanding of body image issues since women from many other walks of lives also experience the same thing. This mission is what the creative work strives for. Using the Self-Discrepancy theory, it explores how body image issues appear in an adult woman’s life, how it affects it, as well as how she learns to overcome the problem. The film is emotional with a dash of magic in it, so it falls under the drama and low fantasy genre.
