Abstract

This study aims to analyze the flouting maxims contained in the Money Monster film. This study uses the qualitative method, and the unit of analysis is the utterances in the Money Monster film script. The writer is using Cutting and Fordyce's (2020) theory of flouting maxims. Flouting maxims can be divided into four categories: flouting the maxim of quantity, flouting the maxim of quality, flouting the maxim of relation, and flouting the maxim of manner. The results of this study indicate that there are all four types of flouting maxims found in the film. The total data is 11 of the flouting maxims; all of the flouting maxims are flouted by the main character in the film. Flouting maxims of quantity are flouted one-time, flouting maxims of quality are flouted two times, flouting maxims of relation are flouted five times, and flouting maxims of manner are flouted three times. The least flouted is the flouting maxim of quantity; it is only flouted once. The flouting maxim that appears the most is the flouting maxim of relation, which is flouted four times in the conversation.

Abstract

Relationship violence refers to any attempt to control or dominate another person physically, sexually, or psychologically, causing some level of harm (Wekerle & Wolfe, 1999). According to the Ministry of Female Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia, almost half of the perpetrators are boyfriends or friends. This concerning phenomenon is what Edwin, Posesif’s director, tries to portray in his film. He represents this reality as a means to raise awareness of obsessive love that turns to violence among teenagers, who just left their childhood and are going to a romantic relationship by seeing the signs of such a relationship. However, without proper understanding on why the characters in this movie are involved in violence relationships, it will not be easy for the audience to learn from the movie. We need to acknowledge the characters’ background and purposes in the romantic relationship to reveal why they are trapped in relationship violence. Therefore, the question is why obsessive love happened to them. Why is the male character, Yudhis, obsessed with Lala, the female character, and why does Lala not end her relationship despite what has happened to her? Bandura’s social learning theory and Bowlby’s attachment theory are used as a framework to unfold their background and behaviors. Both theories include the role of caregivers to the young ones that set templates in their behaviors’ responses in life. In this study, it is known that Diana, Yudhis’s mother, and Lala’s father are both failed in giving adequate attention to their children that causes Yudhis and Lala trapped in a co-obsessive relationship, putting Yudhis as the perpetrator and Lala as the victim. By understanding this, this film can encourage adults and teenagers to be aware of obsessive love and prevent violence in any relationship.

Abstract

The study analyzed captions and posts on Boost’s Instagram that utilizes English slang to communicate to the target market. It used the theories of types of word formation processes by Yule (2006) and that by Minkova and Stockwell (2009). The findings found only the following types of word formation processes: coinage, compounding, blending, clipping, conversion, acronym, derivation, other sources, and multiple processes, with acronym as the most commonly used. Obviously, borrowing and backformation are the types of word formation processes that were not found in the data. It may also be concluded that the targeted reader may influence the use of a certain type of word formation process.

Abstract

The number of child abuse, particularly verbal abuse, has been increasing over the past decades. The increase happens because of some people’s rationalization toward verbal abuse, especially because they believe that verbal abuse is an effective discipline method for their children. Reflecting on this reality, this creative work highlights the issues of childhood verbal abuse on the victims’ behavioral development by displaying the types, the consequences, and the healing steps of childhood verbal abuse. The exploration of the aforementioned issues is supported by Rohner’s Parental Acceptance-Rejection Theory and Bowlby’s Attachment Theory. The form of this creative work is a bildungsroman novel about the journey of a boy named Elliot who suffers from verbal abuse from his mother due to his birth origin.

Abstract

This study, using a qualitative approach, was conducted to find out the rhetorical devices used by Bill Gross when presenting his speech on start-up success, including the function of each of the devices used. The presentation was divided into three parts: introduction, body, and conclusion. In conducting the research, the writer used the theory proposed by Harris (2018). The findings showed that the speaker used all of the rhetorical devices under the three categories, namely: Emphasis, Transition, and Clarity. Each device also has different functions depending on the context of the presentation: to raise the topic’s importance, to provide emphasis, to provide clarity, to maintain the audience’ curiosity, to show the impression of spontaneity, to elaborate details, to help the audience understand better, to anticipate question, and to anticipate ambiguity. In conclusion, the rhetorical devices, particularly hypophora and amplification as the mostly used ones, were applied by Bill Gross to better deliver his presentation.

Abstract

When the couple of man and woman have become husband and wife, it means that the husband becomes the head of family and father of his children while the wife becomes the breadwinner of the family and mother of her children. However, there is a misconception of the ‘head and breadwinner of the family.’ The misconception is that since the husband is the head of the family, it means the husband can order his wife. While the wife, since she roles as the ‘breadwinner’, she must obey and be submissive to her husband and her in-laws. If something bad happens to the husband, the wife will be blamed, even when the wife gets angry at her husband for some reasons, still the wife is the one to blame.

Abstract

EfeX English Language Center recently launched EfeX Indonesia Maju (IM), a new online division. As it is in its early stages, EfeX IM has had limited enrollment due to a lack of promotional activities. To address this issue, I employed various theories, including Kalam's (2022) segmenting, targeting, and positioning theory, MasterClass' (2022) theory on product features, as well as Bhasin's (2021) and Leonard's (2022) theories on promotional videos. After identifying the target market as parents with elementary and middle-school students in major cities in Java, I conducted a questionnaire survey with 52 participants. The results revealed the need for a convenient, engaging, affordable online program that emphasizes speaking skills. To convey this message effectively, a promotional video will be created and shared on Instagram, serving as a versatile tool for promotion through WhatsApp, the website, and presentations.

Abstract

This creative work aspires to discuss the impact of acquiring a physical disability on self-acceptance in our society. As a result of the changing in the physical body, this thesis highlights the drastic shift in attitude from positive to negative self-values to the process of regaining autonomy over one’s life from ableism. These goals will be made into a story in a psychological realism novella supported by Michael Neenan's book, Developing Resilience, which explains resilience theory. Thomas is an acquired disabled man who struggles with his current life due to the pessimistic view and discrimination that control him. Seeing adversity with a negative mindset causes more severity to him and his family, together with self-rejection, which prevents the development of resilience. As his journey goes on, Thomas will have a chance to develop resilience by learning to accept his disability and helping him recover his self-value

Abstract

This paper analyzes the website localization of Dove Indonesia’s website. The study, then, analyzes the adaptation and the translation technique of the translation part that includes the home page and its first next link of the website. In analyzing website localization, the theories that are used are the theory of website localization by Pym (2012) and the translation technique by Molina and Albir (2002). This study found that the website is highly localized with both adaptation and translation. Adaptation includes changes in data and time format, legal inventions, and content. The translation itself uses single and duplet translation techniques. Single technique includes amplification, borrowing, compensation, discursive creation, generalization, literal translation, modulation, particularization, reduction, and transposition. Duplet technique includes compensation and borrowing and reduction and amplification. However, the mostly used translation technique is a single technique, literal translation.
