Abstract

This thesis is a study of the choice of codes used by the announcers of DJ FM and SS FM radios in their advertisements, consisting of twenty advertisements from both radios. I applied some theories of codes from Wardaugh (2006), Stockwell (2002), and Holmes (2001) as my main theories. Also, I used the theory of Age and Linguistic choice from Coulmas (2005), and Marketing and Language Choice from Victor (2007) as my supporting theories. The subjects are two announcers of DJ FM and SS FM radios which are in the phase of young adulthood. Furthermore, I found that the announcers from both radio stations used Standard Indonesia as their main code. The conclusion is the target audience of DJ FM and SS FM did not influence the way the announcers chose their codes.

Abstract

This research investigates the kinship terms produced by strangers towards two young offsprings of inter-ethnic married couples who were used as enticements to generate the production along with the social factors. The data taken from both natural conversations and informal conversational interviews were analyzed using the theories of address Indonesian in Indonesian (John & Stokes, 1977), Javanese (Kuntjara, 2001), Dutch (Matres & Sekel, 2007), and those produced by Chinese-Indonesian (Kuntjara, 2009) and social factors proposed by Holmes (1992) and Wardhaugh (2006). The findings resulted in the mixture of kinship terms from Indonesian, Javanese, Chinese, Dutch, and zero address term which were addressed by strangers to M and F. In addition, addressors mostly considered their own aspects, ethnicity, setting, transactional status and function, and prior knowledge and personal preference as the decisive factors when choosing kinship terms. While the addressee’s aspects, physical features and visible appearance, were the minor factors they took into account.

Abstract

This researched focused on the observation about the speech styles used by a Pastor in delivering the sermon in a Public Service and a Youth Service. In order to know the characteristics of speech styles used by the Pastor, this writer chooses the main theory of formal and informal Bahasa Indonesia as proposed by Tampubolon (1978) which are supported by the theory of lexical and grammatical characteristics for standard Bahasa Indonesia by Kridalaksana (1989). As results, this research shows that the Pastor mostly used informal style in both services because she wanted to more get closer with the Public and Youth Service congregation. However, the Pastor tended to use more formal style to the Public Service congregation than to the Youth Service congregation because she knew exactly that the Youth Service was supposed to be given more attention and clearer explanation about the message given.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the perceptions of the male and female students of Petra Christian University toward the language used in a three-star hotel website in Surabaya and toward the hotel itself. I want to know if the perceptions toward the language will influence the perceptions toward the hotel which writes the website. The respondents of this study are 30 male and 30 female students of Petra Christian University. Here, there are some similarities and differences found between the male and female students’ perceptions toward the language used in a three-star hotel website in Surabaya and toward the hotel itself. It seems that the female students usually see language as one important way to know the hotel. On the other hand, it seems that the male students do not really care about what kind of language that is used in a hotel website

Abstract

This thesis investigates the teacher’s Written Corrective Feedback (WCF) strategies used in the students’ writing drafts and the effects analyzed from the comparison between the first and final drafts. It consists of fifty eight students’ writing drafts as the source of data limited to language use (LU) and vocabulary. The theories applied were the WCF strategies by Ellis (2009a); the effects of written feedback to students by Hyland (2003), and supported by Ferris (2006). The qualitative approach was used in this study. The finding revealed that the strategies used in the class were Direct CF (430 times), and Indirect CF (329 times). The effects were Error corrected, Incorrect change, No change, and Deleted text. Moreover, it was revealed that LU problem was more noticed by the students to be corrected. In conclusion, WCF can guide the students to be more aware of their mistakes and to improve their writing.

Abstract

This study examines the interactional styles related to the role of chairperson used by two female and two male chairpersons in the SEB-PCU meetings. There are three main theories used: interactional styles, gender, and chairpersons and their roles in a meeting. The method used is qualitative approach focusing on the process and the data. The findings reveal that both feminine and masculine interactional styles were used by the chairpersons. The masculine interactional styles were employed to play the roles of chairpersons. The use of interactional styles between female and male chairpersons differs in its ratio although the same linguistic clue was used for the same device. Here, conciliatory feature was not produced by the male chairpersons whereas referentially oriented feature was produced frequently by chairpersons. Overall, it proves that females use more feminine interactional styles while males use more masculine interactional styles. Thus, gender and power play an important role in meeting.

Abstract

This study is about the codes used by two pairs of identical twins to their co-twin in their daily conversation. It is supported by Wardaugh’s (2006) and Stromswold’s theories (2004) of codes and language development. The data was gathered from the utterances produced in the given role plays. The findings reveal that seven types of codes were used by these pairs of twins. The similarities are all of them did not use secret language and both pairs mostly used Indonesian codes. The differences are the frequency of each code used and in general, Pair 2 is more formal than Pair 1. In conclusion, having Javanese parents does not always mean using Javanese codes when communicating with others and although they are twins, they do not always use similar codes. These differences might happen because of the differences in religion and travel experiences

Abstract

This study is a qualitative study aimed to know the principles of CLT implemented and problems faced by a teacher in an English conversation class of eighth grades in S Secondary School. The data was taken through observation and interview. It was analyzed using Larsen-Freeman’ (2000) and Brown’s (2001) theories and supported by Li (1998) as cited in Ozsevik (2010). The findings revealed that out of sixteen principles, five principles were unachievable, namely using discourse language, being a facilitator, setting social context, having communicative interaction, and producing different utterances. Moreover, the main problem in implementing CLT comes from students’ side, such as students’ low English proficiency, passive style of learning, resistance to participate in communicative classroom activities, and lack of motivation for developing communicative competence. It can be concluded that CLT is a suitable approach in promoting communicative competence for learners as long as the teacher and the students are prepared.

Abstract

This project is a further step after taking an internship class in the previous semester. The writer had done an internship at Widjaja Music, music educational school located at Jalan Raya Darmo Permai Timur, No. 19P, West Surabaya, for 122 hours and 25 minutes within two months. Then, the writer found three problems in the institution during the internship, (1) the system of the music school is not good, (2) the facility for the administration is not well-supported, (3) and the music school does not have a clear background and history. Despite the writer’s position as an intern who does not have any power to make an important decision, she uses the company profile as the solution to make the improvements of those problems mentioned above. The company profile is specially designed for both customers and owners. For the customers, the writer emphasizes more on the good and strength side of Widjaja Music. For example, the good things about the various courses that Widjaja Music offers in the school. On the other hand, for the owner, the writer emphasizes more on evaluations that could build and strengthen Widjaja Music. For example, the thing that is not good enough is the personnel structure of the music school. By looking at the evaluation, the owner also could fix the weaknesses and keep the strengths of Widjaja Music. At last, the writer learned a lot about the music school throughout the process of making the company profile for Widjaja Music. Thus, the writer has known the basic things regarding the music school, which she found very useful later in her future career life.
