Abstract

This paper revolves around disenfranchised grief in children. Disenfranchised grief refers to a loss that is not acknowledged, not socially accepted, and not discussed in public which makes people think that they have no right to grieve that loss. With children’s picture books as the chosen creative form and adventure as the chosen genre, this paper presents what causes children to grieve and how they process this grief. The stories depict Putra, Gwen, Daniel, Deborah, and Gabriel experiencing disenfranchised grief because their attachment to people or things they care about is broken, regardless of how trivial it is. Onward, they process grief by going through John Bowlby and Colin Murray Parkes’s four phases of grieving namely numbness, yearning and searching, disorganization, and re-organization to seize acceptance.

Abstract

This thesis is a qualitative study on teacher's roles implemented by an American lecturer (AL) and an Indonesian lecturer (IL) in the English Department, Petra Christian University when they taught Reading classes. The objectives of this study are to find out the teacher's roles of both lecturers and their differences and similarities. This study used Harmer's theory on teacher's roles (2015). The data were collected twice for each lecturer. The findings show that the lecturers applied the teacher's roles: controller, monitor, prompter, editor, resource, and organizer. There were roles of evidence gatherer, tutor, and facilitator that were not implemented by both lecturers. This study also found multiple roles in one utterance. For the difference, only AL played the role of prompter when teaching. In conclusion, the topic of reading passages might affect the teacher’s roles implemented by AL and IL.

Abstract

A creative and innovative advertisement is required by a company to attract customers. So, advertisers must utilize an attractive technique to convince the viewers to buy their products and they need to deliver the messages to the customers. To deliver the messages, advertisers employ semiotic modes such as visual mode, linguistic mode, and gestural mode. We analyze the denotative and connotative meanings as expressed through the semiotic resources used and the messages delivered in the iPhone 13 Relax, it’s iPhone video advertisement. We use the theory of the process of signification by Chandler (2017) and semiotic mode as supporting theory. The denotative and connotative meanings of the advertisement is that the iPhone 13 has three features namely water-resistance, long battery life, and durability. The messages that these advertisements create is a brand myth, that is, people do not have to worry when they use iPhone 13 in an unfavorable situation.

Abstract

This study analyzed the conversational strategies of Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner at The New York Times conference, focusing on their business-related discussions and exploring similarities and differences based on age and status. Following Coates' (2013) theory, seven strategy aspects were examined: minimal responses, hedges, tag questions, questions, commands and directives, swearing and taboo languages, and compliments. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study identified the strategies employed by each speaker. Kim Kardashian used five strategies, while Kris Jenner used six. Overall, the findings indicated more similarity than difference in their conversational strategies, suggesting there are influences from context, status, and age.

Abstract

Multimodal communication employs multiple semiotic modes to convey meaning. Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal is a documentary about Rick Singer, an education entrepreneur who committed the bribes. This study analyzed his representation through the oral and visual modes and was aimed at showing how multimodality could help reveal particular character representations. This study applies multimodal theory (Kress & Leeuwen, 2006) and semiotic modes (Chia & Chan, 2017). The oral monologues and dialogues, and the visuals of people, objects, and places were scrutinized to observe how Rick Singer was depicted. As a result, he was seen being portrayed as a wealthy and successful entrepreneur with many high-ranking connections, who strategically manipulated his clients and his university partners in a clever scheming maneuver. The interplay of both the oral and visual modes has resulted in a relatively complete picture of the main actor of this documentary.

Abstract

This article is intended to analyze how patriarchy values are still implemented in Indonesian literature and this it will specifically analyze how Raia and Anya from Ika Natassa’s work called Critical Eleven and The Architecture of Love face the problem with patriarchy culture that is still affecting their attitude when they face the values. This paper will be talking about the theories using 3M masak, macak, manak (cooking, dressing -up, having babies). The thesis will be talking about Raia and Anya who are affected with these norm values around them with their daily life. This article shows how the patriarch values affect both Raia and Anya in their life and how those values are still implemented in Ika Natassa’s book.

Abstract

This thesis focuses on the possibility of postpartum depression (PPD) among new moms, as well as the importance of family support in the recovery process. The study explores the physical and emotional aspects that contribute to PPD, such as exhaustion and a lack of husband support. The screenplay dives into the path of the main character, a mother who has just given birth and is experiencing postpartum depression due to fatigue and lack of support from her husband and family. She continues to struggle to make her life better through treatment, a support group, and support from her family and she begins to share her stories through social media to raise awareness.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of impoliteness strategies and the similarities and differences of the impoliteness strategies used by the Baroness, an antagonistic character with an impressive background, toward Estella and Cruella in the movie Cruella. The theoretical framework used is Culpeper’s (1996, 2005) and Bousfield’s (2008) impoliteness strategy. This study employed a qualitative approach. The writers collected and analyzed the Baroness’ utterances to her subordinate, Estella, and to her business rival, Cruella, during the business scenes. The Baroness used all six types of impoliteness strategies to Estella, namely: bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm/mock politeness, withhold politeness, and off-record impoliteness. On the contrary, the Baroness only used four out of six types of impoliteness strategies to Cruella, specifically excluding: negative impoliteness and withhold politeness. The Baroness’ background and personality, as well as the interlocutor’s own background, might have influenced the findings of the study.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to analyze the construction and promotion of the ideology of beauty in advertisements from the brands Wardah and Sariayu. To interpret the data, the researcher employed Fairclough's three-dimensional model, which allows for a comprehensive analysis of discourse. Throughout the analysis, the researcher observed the use of various discursive strategies, such as puffery, pseudo-scientific claims, emotional appeals, and linking techniques. In the case of Wardah advertisements, the emphasis was placed on the importance of meeting beauty standards. The advertisements also associated their products with some religious values to appeal a specific target audience. On the other hand, Sari Ayu advertisements focus on the concept of self-improvement and natural complexion. Rather than conforming to societal beauty standards, the emphasis to promote the idea that individuals can be beautiful and confident without adhering strictly to conventional beauty standard.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the persuasive strategies employed by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in their campaign speeches, guided by the theoretical framework proposed by Beebe and Beebe (2012). Through qualitative analysis of paragraphs extracted from two campaign speech transcripts, the study identifies the distinct persuasive strategies of each speaker. Joe Biden used causal reasoning, specific evidence, evidence to tell a story, concrete examples, emotion-arousing words, metaphors and similes, fear appeals, appeal to emotions of hope, appeal to emotions of courage, and shared myths, while Kamala Harris used deductive reasoning, specific evidence, evidence to tell a story, concrete examples, emotion-arousing words, fear appeals, appeal to emotions of hope, and appeal to emotions of courage.
