Abstract

This thesis discusses the impact of female attractiveness on the female character which is related to the way Spy sees attractive women and what the impacts to them are. There are criteria for female attractiveness that are displayed by the film such as physical attributes and traits. In order to show the criteria of attractive women and the responses that they get, I use stereotyping theory. Women who are physically attractive get better treatment, but in order to get that, they have to dress with a certain style that men favor. For the women who are considered as unattractive, they will be ignored by men. In conclusion, I find out that the appearance and the attitude of the female character still depend on men’s view. Women can also be seen as attractive from their characteristics. Attractiveness also has huge influences on the way women get treated by men.

Abstract

This creative thesis focuses on understanding the relation between using social media and social anxiety. The goal of this work is to understand what causes the disorder to appear after exposures to social media and the effect it has on someone. To reach that goal, this creative thesis uses the Presentation of Self Theory and Social Anxiety theory to understand how social media could cause social anxiety and how it affects their life externally . It shows that the problem comes from the desire to become “perfect” in society and after that it would lead to the heightened fear of judgement that is the trigger of social anxiety. Further, social anxiety would prevent someone from living a good social life. Therefore, by understanding people’s desire to be “perfect” and the effects of social anxiety, we can see that being overly afraid of being judged on social media could ruin someone’s life. Keywords: Social Media, Social Anxiety, Presentation of Self, Screenplay, Cyberpunk

Abstract

I undertook this study to present an analysis of the rhetorical styles utilized by Janji Jiwa in writing their Instagram captions and the similarities and differences between the two forms of rhetorical language during the transition period. The language style theory by Keraf (2006) serves as the foundation for this study. I employed a qualitative approach in this research. The findings of the study revealed that Janji Jiwa used rhetorical styles in most of their captions, employing a total of nine distinct rhetorical styles. The comparison was not significant because the company was still in the process of transitioning to the pandemic. In conclusion, Janji Jiwa is considered to have had a good start in dealing with the pandemic transition situation and is still trying to continue to adapt to it. Future research is expected to do the research on the same thing, but in other industries.

Abstract

Ika Natassa’s Divortiare trilogy is Metropop genre novels which tell about Alex’s life as a single woman and housewife. Thus, I want to focus on Alex’s way of prioritizing her career as single woman or divorcee and Alex strategies for being a good wife in Ika Natassa’s Divortiare trilogy. I am going to analyze Alex’s life with women’s roles theory related to patriarchal ideology in Indonesia. The first part of analysis discusses Alex’s way to prioritize her career and her reason. The second part explains her strategies for being a good wife in her second marriage. Also, I find that Alex does her work so hard in order to prove that she can survive on her own. I also find that she embraces the traditional feminine roles in order to get a happy marriage. Therefore, she enjoys her life as a married woman rather than a successful single woman.

Abstract

In this study, I analyze Maleficent (2014), the first Disney film to place a previously antagonist character into a protagonist in a new film. In this thesis, I found changes in the personality of Maleficent from good to evil and back to good that caused her to experience anxieties. Therefore, I use Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory of three fundamental elements of the human psyche (id, ego, and superego), anxiety and defense mechanisms. Based on my analysis, I found that Maleficent becomes evil when her id, ego, and superego are unbalanced, and Maleficent can return to being good when her id, ego, and superego are well-balanced. Moreover, Maleficent experiences reality anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety during the process of her personality changes, and she uses defense mechanisms such as aggression, intellectualization, and apathy to overcome her anxieties.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze Donny Dhirgantoro’s novel, 5 cm, from the perspective of ecocriticism. It tries to investigate the roles of each setting and the portrayals of human-nature relationship in the narrative. The results indicate that there is a dichotomy of the city and mountain. City is depicted as the antagonist while mountain is the protagonist, taking the role of a mother. The narrative conveys nature as an autonomous entity with power to attack/ support the inhabitants. There is interdependency between nature and human being in the text. Nature needs human being to protect it while humans maintain their good relationship with the nature by keeping the rules and social norms around the setting in order to obtain the protection from nature. Despite the novel’s attempt to put nature as the more superior entity, the character’s decision at the end of the narrative shows that nature is still seen as a source of comforts to satisfy human’s needs.
