Abstract

Advertisement is made to persuade consumers to purchase a certain product. To have a successful persuasion, advertisers must pay attention to the major components of the advertisement, like verbal and visual expressions. In this paper, we analyze the messages that FIJI Water Sports Cap wants to convey in its posters, and how they are supported by the use of verbal and visual expressions. To reveal the meaning of the posters, we use Chandler’s theory of process of signification and the supporting theory of metaphor. Our findings show that the messages in FIJI Water Sports Cap posters are related to its naturalness and the benefit of consuming it. The messages are produced in the second level of process of signification or the connotation level. The findings also reveal how visual elements of the posters support the messages that FIJI Water Sports Cap wants to convey.

Abstract

In this study, the writers discussed difficulties, solutions, and strategies used to translate poems of Canvas by doing an annotated translation. The data was taken from the book entitled ‘Canvas’ by Beni Wego. The strategies that the writers used were four strategies by Lefevere (1975), eight strategies by Baker (2018) and two strategies by Newmark (1988). Then, there were two most suitable strategies used which were translation by paraphrase using a related word and free translation. From the analysis, the difficulties were dealing with words that have similar meaning, difficult words to be translated in the TL, length of words, literal meaning, non-equivalent words, words that have multiple meanings, words that cannot be lexicalized, unimportant words, information, words that need more explanation, and idiom structure. From this study, it could be concluded that doing annotated translation help the process of finding out difficulties and solutions.

Abstract

Many advertisements employ gender stereotypes to attract people nowadays. If advertisers continue to employ and display a specific gender in their advertisements, it might lead to gender bias. Through verbal and visual expressions in McDonald's: Still My Little Girl advertisement, this study seeks to discover a depiction of a single father, and he can replace the mother's role in the family. The writer uses semiotic theory and a qualitative approach to analyze the data. The findings indicate that a father who is portrayed as the main character can replace the role of a mother in performing household tasks and dealing with his daughter's sensitive situations.

Abstract

This study uses an Indonesian Webtoon titled ‘Terlalu Cantik’ as an object of research. This Webtoon is particularly interesting as the main female character, Teh Ga, is portrayed as someone who consumes a lot of objects which differentiate her from other characters in the Webtoon, and therefore convey a message that objects carry meanings. Using material culture as a theoretical framework, this study finds out that Teh Ga utilizes different objects including means of transportation, house decoration and facilities, food, clothes, skincare products, and her social media (i.e., Instagram account) for different purposes which are to show her social status, to shape her identity, and to exercise power over others.

The findings showed that the teacher asked conceptual and empirical questions to students in online meetings. When asking questions, the teacher employed five questioning tactics: pausing and pacing, directing and distributing, listening to replies and responding, prompting and probing, and sequencing questions. In conclusion, the teacher's question types and questioning tactics were affected by the lesson’s topic and the class situation. For further research, the writers suggested that two or more learning groups with students from different grades could be analyzed in onsite and online learning environments.

Abstract

This thesis aims to know how the lead female character in Si Manis Jembatan Ancol (2019) fulfills the characteristics of a femme-castratrice and also to see the result that the lead character gets after she transforms into a female monster. To address the questions, I will use the monstrous-feminine theory as the main theory to be applied to Maryam as a victim of gender-based violence. From this theory, I want to show that the transformation of a femme-castratrice may occur by symbolic and literal castration. The symbolic castration means that the victim is castrated emotionally, whereas the literal castration means that the victim is physically abused. I connected the analysis with the abjection theory to show the result and resolution once the main female character is fully transformed into a femme-castratrice, which is a total banishment from the disturbed society, in a form of annihilation. In the end, it can be concluded that a femme-castratrice in Si Manis Jembatan Ancol (2019) is considered an ambiguous character.

Abstract

Chinese dramas, in recent years, have gained popularity in the international market. To be precise, historical dramas have a market that has increased year by year since 2017. This thesis is about Confucian virtues found in four women characters in a historical Chinese drama titled The Sword and The Brocade. This television drama intrigues the writer to analyze four women characters Luo Shi Yi Niang, Qiao Lian Fang, Madam Xu, and Xiang Yi Zhen in the story because The Sword and The Brocade shows the dynamic relationship between the women characters and the plot is wrapped in historical settings but with modern perspective. This thesis aims to find out how the female characters’ actions reflect Confucian virtues and what the impacts of the reflected actions are for them. The analysis is based on Confucianism; focusing on five Confucian virtues: loyalty, filial piety, wisdom, benevolence, and harmony. Moreover, the analysis begins with the women’s way to express the Confucian virtues within their actions and then moves to how the actions from reflecting the virtues impacted their life. From expressing loyalty to harmony, Luo Shi Yi Niang, Qiao Lian Fang, Madam Xu, and Xiang Yi Zhen get positive changes in their lives like getting a new status, achieving their goals, making their family proud, and getting positive aftermath from their past actions. The finding is these women prove that women can gain benefits from Confucianism that is known to be patriarchal and these women are the example of how ancient belief can be modernized to suit nowadays’ modern issues and the story is suitable for everyone and in every era.

Abstract

Young Adult fiction's popularity is at its peak right now due to the topic being related to the problems that teenagers are facing in today's era. One of those novels is Astonishing Color of After, a novel about the mother and daughter’s relationship between two generations, Dory with her mother, and Dory with her daughter, Leigh. This novel intrigues me to analyze the characteristics of Dory's and Dory's mother's parenting style, the influence of their parenting styles, and how it affects the mother's and daughter's relationship and their daughter's behavior problems. To analyze these three points, I will apply the authoritarian parenting style and permissive parenting style based on the types of parenting theory by Diana Baumrind. My analysis will show how Dory's and Dory's mother's parenting style is influenced by the culture and childhood trauma, and how their parenting styles affect the relationship between them and their daughter as well as their daughters' behavioral problems. This thesis will end with a conclusion that there is a line between when the parents become authority figures and when the parents become the companion of their children.

Abstract

PyonPyon is a start-up company in Jakarta that runs on the healthy-beverage industry. During the author’s final assessment internship, PyonPyon was having trouble on getting traffic or even public exposure on their main social media account, Instagram. The author then identified PyonPyon’s problem as low traffic and public exposure on their main social media marketing. Therefore, a solution was implemented by putting PyonPyon on an endorsement through live streamers and posting unique Instagram post. Supporting the solution, the author needs to know the level of brand awareness and consumer’s buying behavior. Thus, a survey was created to 36 respondents from across Indonesia. From the questionnaire, result showed that PyonPyon’s brand awareness is currently at the lowest stage, which is “unaware of brand”. After the survey and implementing the solution, result showed that by putting PyonPyon on live streamers that has decent live views, it can raise the Instagram traffic of PyonPyon. The author decided that endorsement in live streams is a good way to gain traffic and to gain public exposure, also increases PyonPyon brand awareness, since the target market, or the live viewers can check out PyonPyon’s Instagram and product at the same time while it is shown on the show.  The author created a strategy by applying theories such as measuring levels of brand awareness from Aaker (1991), methods to increase brand awareness from Liando and Setyawati (2014), social media marketing from Hayes (2021), and advertising from Yakup (2011).
