Abstract

Abstract

Psychology has been in the past and now is a fragmented science. One reason of the fragmentation is a disagreement about the subject matter of psychology. This paper attempts to review in detail the state of the subject matter disagreement. Analogy from conceptual integration in natural sciences can be used to integrate psychology. The author proposes that psychology should focus on human psychology only. Animal ar nonhuman organisms should not be a domain of psychological study but a domain of other sciences such as biology, zoology, entomology, wild life and animal sciences.

Abstract

Consciousness has been a popular topic in transpersonal psychology although the reviews were more focused on level of consciousness and states of consciousness. Theories of consciousness level are heavily influenced by perenial phylosophy concerning universal elements of consciousness, that are body, mind, soul and spirit. Transpersonal psychology also integrates Western and Eastern approaches in explaining consciousness. Both traditions have a variety and richness of tehniques to reach the four level of body, mind, soul and spirit. Davis (2003) describes transpersonal psychology as psychology that fully integrates psychological concepts, theories, and methods with practices and subject matter of spiritual sciences. In other word, the integration involves both theoretical and practical domains. This paper describes transpersonal psychology’s efforts in integrating psychotherapy.

Abstract

The concept of happiness or healthy personality was born through the enlightening personal experiences of Suryomentaram after his decision to leave Mataram royal family to become the common people. Written in Javanese the concept is often considered as an emic concept which is applied only for Javanense. In contrast, the author argues that Suryomentaram’s concept of “kawruh jiwa” is an etic and universal concept. The argument is based on the similarity when comparison is made between some Suryomentaram’s concepts and several Western psychological concepts. This article reviews the conceptual comparison and describes the contribution of Suryomentaram’s concepts to psychology and related sciences.
