Abstract

In this globalization era, people have to communicate globally. English plays a very important role especially in international communication. It is used in various activities like education, business, politics and technology. Consequently, it is taught in Indonesia to provide supplementary knowledge for communication. The importance of learning English cannot be ignored, it is the greatest common language spoken all over the world. In addition, learning English is very important to increase knowledge and language ability. In Indonesia, English has been introduced at kindergarten school, as the development of the world globalization that demand English skill for all people from different nation in the world. Every school has learned English, there is no need to fear but urgent need for wise adaptation and negotiation so that English becomes a powerful tool for gaining tremendous and unlimited knowledge for all kinds of subjects learned at school. Teaching English to young learners is not as easy as imagined, the teachers is not only help the students to get knowledge, competences and morality, but also have to prepare everything’s need. The teachers have to use many strategies in teaching such as applying various strategies, media and game in order to keep students’ interest in learning English. In this research, quantitative research was used that aim to find out teachers’ strategies in teaching English to young learners. The population was all of the teachers at one of kindergartens in Palembang, and the sample was selected through simple random sampling technique. In collecting the data, interview and questionnaire were used, and then the data was analyzed through descriptive method in this research. Based on the result of the research, it was found that there were three teaching and learning strategies used by the teachers in teaching English for young learners

Abstract

Two main types of educational technology tools (ICT and DERs) are likely mediate and enhance reading motivation as well as reading comprehension through personalized activities and engaging activities. Though, technology provides students with various interactive features that can suit students’ learning style and learning level, framework and approaches like constructionist framework, top-down and bottom-up approaches, as well as learning from technology and learning with technology concepts will navigate learning activities on what ways and how the technologies are used in reading activities, thus improve students’ reading motivation, reading comprehension, and reading fluency. Reading motivation questionnaire alone might give insight to the researchers on the change of reading motivation before and after the intervention, but triangulating the data from questionnaire with the data from interview, observation, and students diary likely expands the information gauged in terms of students’ problems and difficulties in using the technologies, their preference regarding learning activities, and how the technologies with the approaches/concepts/approach can enhance learning, increase students’ reading motivation, comprehension, and fluency.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out the types of error based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy (Dulay, Burt, and Krashen, 1982) that found at ELT student’s speaking and analyzing some factors influencing their errors. The subject of this research was the sixth semester students of English Education from Indo Global Mandiri University who already taken speaking 3 and structure 4 courses. Qualitative study was used as a method to obtain the data. The data was taken from final exam video of speaking 3 course. The researcher analyzed the data following the Error Analysis (EA) procedures which involves transcribing, coding, classifying error, also explaining the errors and their factors. The result shows that the most dominant error were omission (55,50%), followed by addition (22,49%), misformation (18,66%), and misordering (3,35%). The current research investigated the factor of errors based on their source were intralingual and interlingual interference. Meanwhile, intralingual was considered as the major cause of the students’ errors. In conclution, the students still have a problem in terms of grammatical aspect of their speaking. It is suggested that the students should pay more attention to the grammatical aspect and improve their speaking skills.

Abstract

Professionalism is an important thing that every people should have if they want to succeed and move ahead. In teaching world, professionalism is also important. Professionalism in teaching means the professional teachers who have been qualified where they can face the difficulties in teaching by the skills and experiences they have. Teaching English for young learners is not as easy as what people think, the teachers of young learners must be aware of children’s basic physical and psychological needs, they should provide the care necessary to meet the needs so they can thrive and focus in learning. Most of English teachers of primary school are graduated from the primary school teacher education (PSTE) where they have enough skill in teaching young learners but they do not have enough knowledge English. This problem can caused the students get lost if the teachers are not properly skilled and professional.

Abstract

English is so global in the world. Teaching English as foreign language is not easy. It needs motivation, spirit and willingness. Especially young learners, they have no area to speak and practice. That condition makes serious effect. In order to improve students’ speaking ability, teacher must ask them to memorize and learn Vocabulary. Unfortunately, it is a big problem to persuade students to read and memorize it. Vocabulary is the most important element in learning English. Teaching vocabulary is challenging to young learners. It will be boring without method, games and interesting technique. As an instructor, teacher or lecturer must find out a strategy to face this condition. We should create simple way but interesting to our students. In order to help young learners to learn vocabulary, we can use easy and simple game. So, Hot seat can be a solution to learn vocabulary. It is suitable to young learners and easy to use. Students can memorize the words and have fun in learning.

Abstract

Slang is a language that is often used in society. The use of this variety of languages shows that there is a fairly good closeness between the speakers in communication. In this research, it is expected to find out how the description of the use of language, especially the existence of Slang. This study applied the Content Analysis technique. The qualitative descriptive approach is used as the research methodology in this study. This is due to the fact that the researcher analyzed the data descriptively and the conclusion was offered in the form of an explanation of words. From the study, it found that the translator tent to use equivalent words that have similarities in meaning between ST and TT, so it guides the audience easily understood the meaning of Slang words. The translator also tends to use ‘softened word’ in TT in order to avoid the vulgarity and rudeness of ST. In contrast, it also found that the translator did some mistakes in translating slang from ST. This mistake can be avoided by the translator by knowing the cultural background of the slang word first, then looking for relevancy between utterance and context, and last the translator need to pick up the equivalent word in TT that has a similar meaning to the slang word in ST.

Abstract

This study investigated the most dominant conflict management style applied by woman school principal in one private high school in Palembang. The mixed-method research was applied, 18 teachers and one woman principal in this school were selected as the participants of this study. A 28-itemquestionnairewas distributed in order to measure the teachers’ opinions towards their principal conflict management style with teacher-relationship and interviewschedule-face to face was constructed to the principal to get deeper information. Results reveal that this woman school principal demonstrates integrating style which is considerate enough to high concern both for self and for others teachers.

Abstract

The aims of this research were to determine student’s problems in pronunciation, especially consonants, vowels, and diphthongs. The participants of this study were the second-semester students of the Indo Global Mandiri English Education Study Program. The researcher chose second-semester students because students had understood  the phenomenon of pronunciation and they have taken IEC: Pronunciation courses. There were 23 students involved in this research. The data were collected by conducting direct meetings through a performance test that used three forms of tests such as pronounced 44 sentences, pronounced 31 minimal pairs, pronounced one passage with mixed sounds, and their voices made by the students were recorded by mobile phone. The data showed that in fact, most of the students have problems with pronunciations. It is found that the students had problems in pronouncing the English sounds of consonant [v], [θ], [ð], vowel [æ], [ʌ], [ɔ:] and diphthong [eɪ], [oʊ], [аʊ], [aɪ]. Some of the factors that cause pronunciation problems that students face are: the absence of the sound in their mother tongue, students unfamiliar with the targeted words, and students get used to the wrong pronunciation that has been taught before.
