Abstract

This study explores the impact of social media discourse analysis on enhancing the critical thinking skills of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students at Universitas Tridinanti. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. The study involved 150 EFL students divided into control and experimental groups. Quantitative data were gathered through pre-test and post-test assessments, analysed using descriptive statistics, inferential statistics (paired and independent sample t-tests), and ANCOVA. Qualitative data were obtained from semi-structured interviews and documentation observation, involving 10 participants from the experimental group. Quantitative findings revealed a significant improvement in the critical thinking skills of students in the experimental group, with mean post-test scores increasing from 60 to 75, compared to a smaller increase in the control group. Qualitative results supported these findings, highlighting increased engagement, motivation, and enhanced critical thinking skills due to the interactive and collaborative nature of social media platforms. This research is novel in its focused application of social media discourse analysis within an EFL context at Universitas Tridinanti, providing context-specific insights and practical implications for similar educational settings. The integration of both quantitative and qualitative methods enriches the understanding of social media's educational impact. The study concludes that social media discourse analysis effectively improves EFL students' critical thinking skills at Universitas Tridinanti. Abstract

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) plays a crucial role in developing students' emotional intelligence, social skills, and overall well-being. SEL focuses on five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Integrating SEL into English Language Teaching (ELT) aligns these competencies with language learning objectives, fostering improved communication skills and holistic student development. Research indicates that SEL enhances emotional and academic outcomes, increasing student motivation, self-confidence, and peer relationships. In ELT settings, SEL supports a positive learning environment by addressing students' emotional needs, which boosts engagement and reduces anxiety. Despite its benefits, SEL integration faces challenges such as curriculum constraints, limited time and resources, and varying levels of teacher preparedness. Effective integration requires balancing SEL with language goals, providing adequate professional development for teachers, and addressing diverse student needs. While integrating SEL into ELT poses challenges, it promotes resilience, a growth mindset, and better communication skills, contributing to overall student success. To fully capitalize on SEL, educators need ongoing training, and policymakers should support SEL within educational standards. Collaborative efforts among educators, researchers, and policymakers are essential to develop and sustain effective SEL practices, creating a more engaging and supportive learning environment for students. This paper focuses on the opportunities and challenges of the integration of SEL in ELT. Keywords: Social Emotional Learning, ELT Classroom, Opportunities, Challenges

Abstract

This paper investigates the use of movies in teaching idiomatic expressions within English Language Teaching (ELT), focusing on both challenges and opportunities. Using a library-based research methodology, the study synthesizes findings from existing literature to address key questions about the primary challenges, benefits, and best practices associated with this teaching approach. The analysis identifies cultural barriers, contextual complexity, and student engagement as significant challenges. Conversely, movies enhance comprehension and retention, provide cultural enrichment, improve listening and speaking skills, and encourage autonomous learning. The findings suggest that movies, when carefully selected and appropriately used, can be a powerful tool in ELT, offering a dynamic and effective method for teaching idiomatic expressions. This study provides practical recommendations for educators on integrating movies into their teaching strategies to maximize educational outcomes. Abstract

Utilizing social media has been part of most people’s daily lives, especially Generation Z. Social media offers various functions, e.g., socialization, learning, and entertainment. TikTok provides several strategies to improve students’ learning experience regarding English language learning. Those features in social media create a highly motivating environment for students, so it is important to find out how TikTok helps students improve their vocabulary fluency. This study aims to examine students’ perceptions of using TikTok to improve vocabulary fluency through autonomous learning methods and to identify how TikTok, as social media, facilitates EFL students in improving their vocabulary knowledge. The research method for this study is a qualitative approach with a questionnaire and interview. Fifty-six participants were involved in the research, and five attended the focus group discussion. The findings showed that participants believe TikTok is a comfortable tool for vocabulary learning, improving their vocabulary knowledge and vocabulary fluency. From the interview, the participants identified some strategies for learning vocabulary, such as accessing the materials frequently, saving the videos, and utilizing the vocabulary items they learned through TikTok.
