Abstract

Moral excellence (akhlak) holds paramount significance in Islam, serving as the criterion for a Muslim’s standing before Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of benevolence and deeds over outward appearances, highlighting the inseparable connection between ethical conduct and spiritual integrity. Despite this high regard for moral virtues, embodying them remains a significant challenge for Muslim youth, particularly among university students. The era of globalization, coupled with the pervasive influence of social media and mass media, often exerts a detrimental impact on adolescents, contributing to a pressing concern over behavioral misconduct issues within higher education institutions. This study examines the concept of moral education for university students by analyzing Al-Buzaidi’s book, Al-Adab Al-Mardhiyyah. This research aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the principles of moral excellence as a guide for contemporary challenges faced by young Muslims in a university setting.

Abstract

This study maps the intellectual landscape of research on poverty in Islam using a structured bibliometric approach with Biblioshiny (Bibliometrix) in RStudio. A Scopus search (TITLE-ABS-KEY “poverty” AND “Islam”) conducted on 1 September 2023 identified 279 English-language journal articles published between 1976 and 2023. The corpus spans 227 sources, 646 authors, and 10,262 cited references, with an annual growth rate of about 5%. Performance and science-mapping analyses reveal two “motor themes”—Islamic finance and healthcare/public health—while spiritually anchored constructs (e.g., maqasid, zakat governance, waqf, spiritual poverty) remain peripheral in co-occurrence and thematic maps. Citation patterns indicate higher field-normalized impact when studies are placed in multidisciplinary outlets, suggesting scope to bridge Islamic social-finance debates with mainstream development and health discourses. Methodological limitations include reliance on a single database (Scopus) and a narrow query that may under-capture related terms (e.g., “zakat”, “waqf”), which should be expanded in future replications. Overall, the review identifies key authors, venues, and conceptual clusters; highlights blind spots in spiritually grounded frameworks; and offers a roadmap for aligning Islamic social-finance instruments with maqasid-oriented outcomes in poverty alleviation.

Abstract

Teachers need to possess certain information in order to teach a class properly, particularly when teaching Worship and Fiqh, which includes memorization of practices, legal issues, fardu ain, and fardu kifayah, as well as student appreciation. Since teaching worship involves legal concerns and issues, it is crucial for teachers to be well-versed in the subject matter because this will affect both the pedagogical strategies they use to deliver the lesson's content and their ability to meet the established learning objectives. But according to the researcher's analysis, there are a number of holes in the Malaysian Secondary School Standard Curriculum (KSSM), namely in the area of worship that deals with women's blood instruction. Lack of exposure to and in-depth discussion of this subject impairs instructors' fundamental comprehension of women's blood, making it difficult for them to tackle the blood problems that students face in the classroom. Subsequently, the purpose of this article is to examine the methods and understanding of Islamic Education instructors about the fiqh of women's blood as taught in the Malaysian Secondary School Standard Curriculum (KSSM). The data for this qualitative study was gathered through semi-structured individual interviews with four Islamic Education Teachers (GPIs) who are now employed by the Malaysian Ministry of Education (KPM) in National Secondary Schools. The teachers were chosen by purposive sampling. Interview data has been analysed based on the idea of a contextual learning method to investigate how much teachers' practices and knowledge promote students' contextual learning characteristics. The study's findings indicate that Islamic Education teachers are still not fully utilising the contextual learning approach when it comes to women's blood because of their limited understanding of the subject and the Malaysian Secondary School Standard Curriculum (KSSM) coverage of the subject matter. Since teachers are responsible for imparting knowledge to their students, it is important to highlight the importance of teachers' ongoing pursuit of knowledge. This will help teachers become more knowledgeable about the subjects they teach and will also enable them to respond to inquiries from students promptly.

Abstract

This article interrogates the intricate nexus between Sunni jurisprudence and Sufi mysticism during the Ayyubid and early Mamluk eras, utilizing the preeminent jurist al-ʿIzz ibn ʿAbd al-Salām (d. 660 AH/1262 CE) as a focal point. The study addresses a core historiographical problem: the presence of discordant medieval narratives regarding al-ʿIzz’s formal affiliation with Sufi orders and his jurisprudential stance on Sufi praxis. To resolve this, the research pursues two pivotal questions: To what extent was al-ʿIzz genuinely integrated into Sufi circles, and how did his legal framework delineate the boundaries of permissible Sufi conduct and institutionalization? Employing a qualitative inductive methodology, the research systematically triangulates evidence from al-ʿIzz’s authenticated legal and ethical treatises (primary corpus) against diverse medieval biographical and hagiographical sources (secondary corpus/Ṭabaqāt). This analytical framework facilitates a critical distinction between established doctrinal positions and retroactive hagiographical attributions. The findings demonstrate that while al-ʿIzz maintained a profound intellectual rapport with orthodox Sufi luminaries—notably al-Shādhilī—and embraced the ethical-ascetic dimensions of Taṣawwuf, his verified writings articulate a rigorously selective endorsement. As a reformist jurist, he sanctioned Sufism only insofar as it remained tethered to Shari'ah-centric orthodoxy, while vehemently repudiating ritualistic innovations (Bidʿah) such as Samāʿ (ecstatic sessions). Consequently, the significance of this study lies in redefining al-ʿIzz not as a formal Sufi initiate, but as a paradigmatic “juristic gatekeeper.” These conclusions contribute to the broader discourse on medieval Islamic intellectual history by elucidating the mechanisms of scholarly policing of spiritual boundaries and the complexities of manuscript-based historical reconstruction.

Abstract

The escalation of the Israel-Palestine conflict since October 2023 has prompted extensive responses from religious institutions worldwide, illuminating the complex intersection of faith, ethics, and geopolitics in confronting humanitarian crises. This editorial examines these reactions to argue that, despite fostering widespread empathy and moral advocacy, their overall impact remains constrained by doctrinal divisions, internal polarizations, and geopolitical obstacles, necessitating enhanced interfaith coordination for meaningful change. The analysis draws on a synthesis of scholarly literature, institutional statements, and citation analyses from theological, peace studies, and international relations sources, focusing on key responses during 2024 while incorporating historical context and comparative regional perspectives. Christian institutions, led by the Vatican and Pope Francis, issued repeated calls for immediate ceasefires, emphasizing civilian protection and human dignity while navigating tensions in Catholic-Jewish relations amid debates over historical interpretations and universal brotherhood. The World Council of Churches advanced ecumenical resolutions urging divestment and solidarity with Palestinians, though contrasting views persisted between progressive humanitarian emphases and conservative support for Israel’s security claims. Islamic organizations, including the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Muslim World League, condemned Israeli actions through fatwas and resolutions framing solidarity as a humanitarian imperative, yet struggled with gaps between rhetoric and enforceable actions. Nahdlatul Ulama in Indonesia exemplified adaptive jurisprudence via “fiqh of civilization,” promoting moderate Islam, aid mobilization, and dialogue. Progressive Jewish voices critiqued policies through justice-oriented campaigns, challenging monolithic narratives, while non-Abrahamic traditions contributed nonviolence-based perspectives emphasizing shared suffering and decolonial frames. These diverse engagements highlight religion’s capacity to amplify calls for justice and humanitarian relief, yet reveal persistent challenges such as sectarian rifts, misinformation in digital spaces, and limited translation of statements into policy shifts or unified pressure. Regional contrasts, particularly Indonesia’s robust mobilization versus more neutral stances in parts of Asia, underscore demographic and historical influences on solidarity intensity. Ultimately, the editorial concludes that religious responses signal potential for stronger interfaith alliances and peace pathways, provided institutions prioritize concrete coordination, ethical charters, and anti-misinformation efforts. By bridging divides through shared values of compassion and dignity, faith communities can evolve from symbolic solidarity toward transformative contributions to Palestinian self-determination and regional stability.
