Abstract

This qualitative research aims to determine the extent to which students are motivated to speak through information gap activities in English classroom at one of high schools in Kota Kendari. This research was conducted in three meetings consisting of two meetings with activity stages including: planning, implementing the action, observing (observing), and reflecting. The data was gathered using field observation sheets and student reflection sheets. The research findings reveal that the information gap activity can motivate students to speak in English class. Students look enjoy, happy, and enthusiastic in the classroom. Students are motivated to speak when they are assigned information gap activities in pairs or groups. The activities give them more opportunities to practice speaking by exchanging certain information to other friends. Students are encouraged to communicate and collaborate with their partners in completing the tasks.

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to explore EFL learners’ experience of Zoom platform use in online research consultation during COVID-19. Data were gathered from five students' reflection who used Zoom platform as a media for online research consultation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Framed by usability concept, findings of the study reveal that in terms of learnability, Zoom platform facilitates the senior students in their online consultation process. Meanwhile, in terms of satisfaction, findings reveal that students were satisfied with the use of Zoom due to feature support in the platform.

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the challenges Thai EFL pre-service teachers faced during their field teaching practice at some schools. This study used a reflective journal as the instrument to collect the data gathered data was analyzed thematic. The findings showed that there were several challenges Thai EFL fac in their field of teaching practice in Indonesian classrooms. First, they are not confident to speak English while teaching English in an Indonesian classroom. Second, some of the Indonesian students did not focus to study English while the Thai pre-service teachers were teaching in the classroom. Last, some Thai pre-service teachers encountered problems with managing limited time in classroom management. This study implies that EFL student teachers may understand the sources cause challenges. They should prepare before the true field of teaching will become

Abstract

This case study investigates the teacher’s encouragement factor influencing EFL students’ willingness to communicate in a speaking classroom context. The data in this study involved five EFL students from the English Education Department at a higher education institution in South East Sulawesi who were recruited based on their participation in the speaking class. Data were collected using the reflection of five EFL students and an online interview as a follow-up instrument to dig deeper into the data. The data were thematically analyzed using. Therefore, the researcher used the thematic analysis, then color-coding and categorized based on the willingness to communicate (WTC) framework. The findings indicate that students' WTC in speaking class is closely related to the four factors influencing the teacher's wait time, error correction, support, and teacher’s strategy as encouragement elements. Students with self-motivation acknowledged being more encouraged and confident to communicate in the classroom context. This study suggests future research can be conducted with many participants.Keywords: case study; L2 speaking class; teacher encouragement; willingness to communicate.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the application of EFL students' memory strategies when writing essays. This study uses qualitative methods to collect data through reflection as a research instrument. The results of the study revealed that students used different memory strategies to help make it easier for them to write essays. The memory strategy that many students use when writing reads the references related to the essay topic they are going to write. Having many references makes it easier for students to develop their ideas, student writing is more varied, and it is easier for students to write essays. Memory strategy has an influence on students' essay writing.Keywords: Essay writing; memory strategy; writing essay.
