Abstract

The tradition of swinging slaves is one of the intangible cultural heritages that is still preserved from generation to generation by the Melayu community in Dumai City, Riau Province. The practice of rocking a baby is not only limited to a physical act, but is also full of social and cultural meaning. However, along with social changes, solidarity in the Ayun Slave tradition has also undergone changes. By adopting Émile Durkheim's perspective, this research examines how factors such as urbanization, modernization and globalization influence the form and meaning of social solidarity in the Ayun Slave practice. This research was conducted through a descriptive qualitative approach. From the results of this research, it was found that the slave swinging tradition functions as a means of strengthening relationships between family members and society, and also as a medium for transferring cultural values from generation to generation. Slave swings also become a forum for people to share happiness and celebrate important moments in a child's life. Keywords: Social solidarity, Emile Durkheim, Ayun Budak.

Abstract

Social change is an essential part of societal dynamics and a significant focus in the evolution of social sciences, which examine various aspects such as values, norms, and social structures. This study aims to illustrate the differing paradigms of classical sociological figures, namely Karl Marx and Emile Durkheim, in analyzing social change within society. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach and literature review in its data collection process. The analysis in this study not only outlines the contrasting perspectives of these two thinkers but also describes the relevance of their ideas to contemporary phenomena of social change. The findings reveal fundamental differences: Karl Marx firmly relies on the concept of historical materialism to critically examine social change, emphasizing economic conditions as a driving factor. In contrast, Emile Durkheim explains that social change is not rooted in conflict and opposition but rather a process of societal adaptation to maintain social order and preserve social solidarity. This study underscores the need to explore more contemporary forms of social change, such as extreme climate shifts, digitalization, and social movements, to make classical theories more applicable to current realities.

Abstract

This study examines money politics as a representation of patron-client culture in elections, focusing on its implications for democratic integrity in Indonesia and other developing countries. The primary issue addressed is how money politics, through financial incentives, reinforces dependency between political elites and voters, undermining fair electoral processes. The research aims to analyze the socio-political dynamics of money politics and its impact on democratic governance. Using a qualitative approach, the study relies on literature review and secondary data analysis, including academic journals, election reports, and media articles. The findings reveal that money politics perpetuates systemic corruption, exacerbates social and political inequalities, and weakens public trust in democratic institutions. The study concludes that addressing money politics requires comprehensive reforms, including stricter campaign finance regulations, enhanced political literacy, and stronger democratic institutions. This research highlights the importance of understanding money politics within the framework of patron-client relationships to develop effective strategies for promoting fair and inclusive democratic practices. Keywords: Money Politics; Patron-Client; Election; Political-Sociology
