Abstract

This paper presents the approach that is being used to involve the community not only in handling the hazardous waste in accordance with the policy of the university but also in taking steps forward trying to improve the waste management practices and reduce the amount of waste generated by the campus operation. The approach involves the creation of a group of representatives of the Waste Management Group at each department who are responsible for disseminating the policy and best practices of waste management in their workspace. These representatives are trained to update or create the Local Waste Management Plans (LWMP) of the areas and as a result, currently, 52 areas of University of Campinas have their PGRL updated.

Abstract

In order to organize the multiple actions the Universidad Javeriana had been developing for the sustainable management of its campus, a strategic plan was structured. The plan is structured in five major programs: water resources, energy, biodiversity, recycling and reduction of CO2 emissions. For the definition of these five programs we were inspired by the contributions of the thematic structure of Green Metrics, the recommendations of the Encyclical Laudato Si and the SDGs. In turn, each program is broken down into sub-programs, projects and sub-projects. Each program also includes cross-cutting strategies articulated in sub-programs which are broken down into research projects, semester projects, graduate work and theses. Also, sub-programs for disseminating initiatives and entrepreneurship are considered. The planning instrument is taken to the detail of operational planning, using the Gantt Chart. A team coordinates the coordination of the different programs and meets weekly to review its progress. The plan was presented and approved to the University's Steering Committee, and the document has been incorporated into the University's Strategic Plan. It is also being used to link professors from civil engineering, electronics and architecture careers who invite students to carry out semester or degree work on topics that strengthen campus execution.

Abstract

The paper delves into the water management strategies of Oguz Han Engineering and Technology University of Turkmenistan (ETUT), emphasizing sustainable practices and regulatory compliance. ETUT employs various innovative techniques like rainwater collection through rain gardens, permeable pavement, and cisterns to mitigate runoff and enhance water quality. Rainwater is stored for irrigation, reducing reliance on municipal sources and contributing to groundwater recharge. A water-recycling program repurposes rainwater and fountain water, while innovative structures promote plant growth and water conservation by condensing atmospheric moisture. The university utilizes advanced wastewater treatment methods incorporating plants and microorganisms to purify water efficiently. Complying with national regulations ensures safe drinking water provision and resource protection. Regular monitoring aids in assessing policy effectiveness, fostering continuous improvement. ETUT's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship is reflected in its comprehensive water conservation program, fostering a culture of innovation and responsibility within the university community.

Abstract

Conventional ways of delivering sustainability content often fail to capture the breadth and dynamism of university challenges. To overcome the issue, UI GreenMetric has proposed a new way of delivering content by using digital media. This study investigates the integration of digital mediaincluding Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and Website to augment sustainability insights within the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings Network. This study analyzes the results, effects, and further implications of UI GreenMetric’s practices in incorporating user-generated content from those digital media platforms into the sustainability assessment framework to leverage the ubiquity and the richness of the content. The analysis is conducted for various activities, such as podcast/live discussions, event streaming, posts and videos related to sustainability initiatives. The findings show that integrating digital media has significantly boosted sustainability outreach within the UI GreenMetric network. UI GreenMetric not only drives the transformation of individuals, communities, and universities toward sustainability but also extends its impact through dozens of online events, such as webinars, workshops, courses, live discussions, and podcasts throughout the year. These efforts have successfully reached a wider audience, leading to meaningful behavioral changes as participants engage in campaigns and actively contribute to rankings and events.

Abstract

More than 30 years ago, the participation of RUDN in the Earth Summit in Rio became an important moment in the university’s history: it was decided to create the first comprehensive ecological faculty in Russia. Now half of the history of our university is also the history of environmental education in Russia. During this time, more than 10,000 ecologists and hundreds of specialists in other sustainability areas were trained. Almost all programs at the university include aspects of sustainability. Over 15 MOOCs and 10 interdisciplinary courses on relevant aspects have been developed. Annually, over 1,000 specialists improve their skills in various aspects of sustainability. An extensive research program in the areas of environmental safety and sustainability includes only in recent years: a program on environmental safety of transport (a part of the Federal project “Clean Air”); expert work on the implementation of BATs. In 2021, Russia’s first Body for the Validation and Verification of Greenhouse Gases was successfully accredited in the university. More than 100 students are annually involved in the campus environmental monitoring program. Since 2022, the university presents a sustainability report. The environmental policy is presented on the university website and has been successfully implemented since 2017. We are confident: the role of the university is the formation of personality, the promotion of the sustainability ideas on the example of its home university.

Abstract

The university campuses are like microcities, providing employees and students with social opportunities and essential services in addition to their core educational activities (teaching, research, and outreach). The smart campus is a growing trend that makes efficient use of infrastructure by integrating smart technologies for decision-making and advancing sustainability goals. The mobility and transport project at the Unicamp University campus is part of the Smart Campus Management Technical Chamber, and the Campus 5.0 concept is aligned with several sustainable development goals outlined in the UN's 2030 Agenda. This proposal aims to develop an inventory of vehicle emissions, establish the connectivity of the information and communication network to analyze the impacts of vehicles on local air quality, and structure support models for decision-making, in addition to presenting practical solutions implemented at Unicamp aiming at greater sustainability of the campus. The information and communication network will allow the collection and analysis of data in real time, providing accurate and updated information on vehicle emissions and air quality in the campus area. Decision support models will be developed, which will allow the definition of policies and actions to promote sustainable mobility on campus, contributing to the creation of a healthier and more sustainable university environment. These results will aid university administrators in improving Green Metrics' key performance indicators.

Abstract

The Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) is the largest educational institution in the Midwest of Brazil, with its quality in teaching, research, extension, management, and infrastructure recognized at national and international levels. In 2023, the university received the highest rating in the institutional assessment conducted by the Ministry of Education (MEC), the government body responsible for promoting quality education in the country, and for the first time, ranked in the top 100 global in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking. UFMS was considered the 74th most sustainable university out of 1,183 institutions evaluated, and the 5th in the country. The university implements various good practices aligned with each of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda. The aim of this work is to present some of these practices, with an emphasis on incorporating the SDGs into the university's teaching, research, and extension projects. In a quantitative and descriptive analysis, from 2018 to 2023, there have been over 20,000 projects registered at UFMS with more than 45,000 SDGs indicated. It is hoped that this study can inspire other institutions regarding the importance of meeting the SDGs.

Abstract

The impact of climate change has intensified the urgency of adopting sustainable practices in academic institutions, highlighting the need for innovative models that not only mitigate environmental impact, but also promote effective adaptation. This paper presents a pioneering approach focused on the development of a utility model designed specifically for climate change adaptation in the context of Universidad El Bosque. The paper focuses on the implementation of circular economy strategies, focusing on the efficient management of usable waste generated at the institution, specifically for cardboard and paper. This model, the result of interdisciplinary research, not only proposes tangible solutions to reduce the university's carbon footprint, but also establishes an exemplary paradigm for other educational institutions on their path towards environmental sustainability. In the development of the research and analysis of the data recorded by the Environmental Management Unit, it is determined that the rate of generation of usable waste from the university corresponds to a total of 19,475 kilograms for the 2023 period. Therefore, through the detailed analysis of the implementation and results obtained, this article seeks to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in a useful model for adaptation to climate change, with a practical and replicable approach in university environments and beyond, which consists of proposing a model for the implementation of a process of transformation of cardboard and paper waste, for the production of stationery items that can be sold in the university store, promoting reuse, circular economy and sustainability.

Abstract

UC Davis has a vision for a fossil fuel-free future. The university released the Fossil Fuel-Free Pathway Plan (FFFPP) to address the climate crisis by reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions. The FFFPP outlines strategies to eliminate 95% of fossil fuel use, based on 2019 levels, from university operations by 2040. The plan includes the Davis campus, UC Davis Health, Aggie Square, Tahoe Environmental Research Center, Bodega Marine Laboratory, and multiple outlying and leased properties. UC Davis has already broken ground on the Big Shift, a fossil fuel-free conversion project that will allow the campus to heat buildings with electricity rather than natural gas and reduce the Davis campus’s fossil fuel consumption by 80%. The FFFPP aligns with broader climate goals and initiatives set by the University of California (UC). The Pathways to a Fossil-Free UC Task Force was created to investigate the challenge of accelerating efforts to decarbonize each UC campus. To further support these efforts the UC recently adopted stronger climate action goals that prioritize direct emission reductions. UC Davis participates in the UC President’s Bonnie Reiss Leading on Climate Student Fellowship Program, which funds student-generated projects that reinforce the UC-wide climate action goals. UC Davis students in the program are playing an important role in climate resiliency on campus.
