Abstract

The interplay between culture and language is a central theme in anthropological linguistics. Culture encompasses values, beliefs, norms, and traditions passed down through generations, and language plays a fundamental role in expressing and preserving these cultural elements. This paper explores the reciprocal relationship between language and culture, illustrating how language not only reflects but also shapes the social and cultural realities of a community. By examining various examples, such as the use of honorifics in Japanese culture and the transmission of oral traditions in indigenous communities, the study highlights the role of language as a medium for cultural continuity. Additionally, it delves into how cultural changes, such as technological advancements, lead to the evolution of language, especially in the development of new vocabulary. Through this analysis, the paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how language and culture mutually influence each other, facilitating the ongoing process of cultural preservation and transformation.

Abstract

This study examines the accuracy with which taxi drivers at Nusa Dua International Resort in Bali express interrelated language functions, specifically greetings, farewells, and forms of address. Data were collected from 50 respondents through a test consisting of 14 situational questions in Bahasa Indonesia, yielding a total of 1,100 responses. The results indicate that 518 responses (47%) were correct, while 582 (53%) were incorrect. Among the 18 expected expressions, the three most common errors were found in "ladies and gentlemen" (92%), followed by "ladies and gentleman" (90%) and "sir (and) madam" (86%). Conversely, the three least common errors were in "good afternoon" (18%), "good morning" (16%), and "sir" (16%). These mistakes stem from a lack of familiarity with the expressions, often leading to a negative transfer from Bahasa Indonesia to English. Overall, respondents reported that greetings were the easiest language function while addressing proved to be the most challenging. The pedagogical implications of this study suggest that English language trainers should tailor their teaching to focus on expressions with higher error rates. The frequency and types of errors identified can serve as valuable discussion points in teaching sessions.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to explore the Marriott International Core Values through Critical Discourse Analysis. The data is taken from Marriott official website, and students’ interview. The data was then analyzed based on Fairclough’s three-dimensional model which covers text, discourse practice and social practice. The findings of the study highlight that Marriott’s core values have the power to motivate both management and associates to provide exceptional service to customers, the community, and the entire world. The core values benefit not only those inside Marriott's company but also the external stakeholders, especially its customers. This study underscores the significance of core values in shaping organizational culture and behavior. It implies that well-articulated core values can serve as a strategic tool to enhance employee engagement, customer satisfaction, and overall brand reputation. Organizations may adopt similar analytical approaches to assess and refine their core values, ensuring alignment with internal and external goals for sustainable growth and success.
