Abstract

The Society 5.0 era emphasizes collaboration between humans as its center and technology as its basis. The use of technology can be utilized in overcoming problems in the teaching and learning process. The problem currently being faced is the lack of variation in digital learning media. Currently, Mandarin teachers rely more on handouts that are made independently. This is because the preparation of handouts is considered the most feasible to be prepared. In addition to using handouts, information was also obtained that Mandarin teachers like to use YouTube accounts as an alternative digital-based teaching media compared to other teaching resources. This is because YouTube videos are the easiest to access even though there are several shortcomings such as there are always advertisements, students can skip them and the duration is too long. As a result, teachers feel more confident and ready to implement more effective digital learning methods in their classrooms. In other words, this activity succeeded in providing an in-depth understanding of the use of technology in learning, despite the technical and access constraints faced by Chinese teachers. Through this training, the teachers not only gained new technical skills but also strategies to overcome the challenges. As a suggestion, further training and ongoing technical support should be organized to ensure teachers can continue to develop their digital competencies.

Abstract

This research discusses the meaning shift in Chinese to Indonesian translation of Chinese drama series 你是我的荣耀 [Nǐ Shì Wǒ de Róngyào]. Using Simatupang's theory, this study aims to identify and analyze the types of meaning shifts that occur. Data were collected from the first two episodes of the drama series and analyzed through descriptive qualitative method. The results show that there are three types of meaning shift, namely meaning shift due to cultural influence, meaning shift from specific to generic, and meaning shift from generic to specific. The shift in meaning due to cultural influence is the most frequent, influenced by the use of 成语 [chéngyǔ], particles, figurative words, catchwords, and differences in cultural context between BSu and BSa. The shift from specific to generic occurs when the translator simplifies specific terms to make them easier for the audience to understand. The shift of meaning from generic to specific occurs when the translator adds additional context to make it easier for the audience to understand. This study shows the importance of cultural understanding in the translation process to ensure an accurate translation that can be understood by the target language audience. Future researchers are advised to expand the research by analyzing more episodes or series from various genres for a deeper understanding of meaning shifts, and students studying translation are advised to learn more about the impact of meaning shifts on audience comprehension of translated texts.

Abstract

This study evaluates the implementation of Language Exchange through the HelloTalk app to enhance the speaking skills of Mandarin Language Education students at State University of Malang, Class of 2022. In the era of globalization, Mandarin language skills are becoming increasingly important. A descriptive qualitative method was used to collect data through observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The results show that language exchange via HelloTalk positively impacts students' confidence and motivation in speaking Mandarin. Students feel more comfortable communicating with native speakers and gain a more interactive learning experience. Although some challenges relate to app feature access, most students recommend its use. This study suggests integrating Language Exchange with apps like HelloTalk to boost students' confidence and motivation in Mandarin language learning. Future research is recommended to involve participants from more diverse backgrounds and explore the potential of language exchange in learning other languages.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of persona deixis in a Chinese novel entitled 很想很想你 [hĕn xiăng hĕn xiăng nĭ] 'Really Really Miss You' by Mo Bao Fei Bao. By using qualitative method and literature review approach, this research aims to describe the form of persona deixis and to describe its use in the context of the novel narration. The analysis shows that there are 4,504 uses of persona deixis in the novel. The results describe the dominance of third person deixis, especially for the character她[tā] 'she is a girl', as well as the significant use of first and second person deixis. The analysis illustrates that the variation in the use of persona deixis reflects the social dynamics, culture, and relationships between characters in the novel. This study presents an in-depth description of the role of persona deixis in narrative construction and character development in Chinese literary works. The findings provide a detailed picture of the use of persona deixis in the context of literary works and can help Chinese learners understand the concept of persona deixis more comprehensively, as well as contribute to the study of pragmatic linguistics.

Abstract

The Mandarin language is becoming increasingly popular in the education sector in Malaysia. Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has the largest number of Malay students studying Mandarin in the country. Almost all Malay students studying Mandarin at the university do not have a background in Mandarin. They are inevitably influenced by their mother tongue, Malay. The purpose of this study is to analyze the common Mandarin biased phrasal errors made by Malay students learning Mandarin at UiTM. In addition, some teaching methods are recommended to guide the Mandarin teaching staff. This study was conducted using mixed methods. Two research instruments were used in this study, i.e., questionnaires and interviews. Forty Malay students who were enrolled in the Introductory Mandarin Level 2 course at UiTM Shah Alam Campus were selected as survey respondents. The results of the study indicated that respondents made four common errors in learning Mandarin biased phrases, namely: (i) omission of quantifiers, (ii) reversal of the order of biased phrase strings, (iii) incorrect use of demonstrative pronouns, and (iv) excessive use of the particle “de”. The Mandarin teachers can use a variety of methods to teach Mandarin biased phrases, including comparisons with English, and implementing interactive, collaborative and innovative learning in the classroom. In the future, researchers can further study the grammatical errors made by Malay students with different educational backgrounds or language levels in learning Mandarin in order to develop more targeted teaching strategies for students with different levels of proficiency.
