Abstract

This study explores how Al Jazeera.com frames the Palestine-Israel conflict as part of a broader resistance to dominant global narratives. It focuses on themes of justice, victimhood, and Islamic identity. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) a method developed by Norman Fairclough to examine how language reflects and shapes power dynamics the research analyzes 15 news and opinion articles published during two key periods of heightened conflict: May 2021 and October 2023. The analysis reveals that Al Jazeera consistently presents the conflict not as a balanced clash between equal sides, but as an unequal struggle in which Palestinians face systemic oppression. The platform uses strong terms such as “occupation,” “apartheid,” and “resistance” to highlight this imbalance. Islamic elements appear frequently, both symbolically (e.g., references to the Al-Aqsa Mosque) and conceptually (e.g., calls for ummah, or global Muslim solidarity). The study concludes that Al Jazeera acts not just as a media outlet but also as a discursive agent—shaping public opinion and challenging dominant Western perspectives. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of Islamic worldview and Global South positioning into media discourse analysis of the Palestine-Israel conflict.

Abstract

This study analyzes Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd’s critical approach to reforming the understanding of Islamic religious texts. In response to the challenges posed by modernity and globalization, Abu Zayd emphasizes the importance of rationality in interpreting religious teachings. His ideas emerge as a response to the stagnation of Islamic thought, which tends to be scripturalist and ahistorical. The study aims to examine Abu Zayd’s methodological contributions in offering a new paradigm of Qur’anic interpretation that is contextual and inclusive. This research employs a qualitative approach using historical-critical analysis and critical discourse analysis of Abu Zayd’s key works. Data were obtained through a review of primary and secondary literature discussing his interpretative thought and methodology. The results show that Abu Zayd’s contextual approach encourages a progressive and inclusive interpretation of religious texts. He stresses the importance of understanding texts within the historical, social, and cultural contexts in which they emerged. Thus, the interpretation of texts becomes dynamic and relevant to contemporary realities. The discussion highlights how Abu Zayd’s approach opens space for dialogue between text and context and supports the values of pluralism, tolerance, and individual rights in modern Muslim societies. His findings make a significant contribution to the development of critical Islamic studies and help bridge the gap between tradition and social transformation. This study recommends integrating the contextual approach into Qur’anic studies to promote a more open and humanistic Islamic discourse.

Abstract

This study explores the cultural and semiotic meanings embedded in the ornamental designs of the An-Nur Grand Mosque in Riau, Indonesia. Ornamentation in Islamic architecture serves not only as aesthetic enhancement but also as a medium for conveying symbolic and cultural values. Grounded in Marcel Danesi's semiotic theory, this research aims to analyze and interpret the types, forms, and meanings of ornaments present in the mosque's architectural elements. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the data were collected through field observations, photographic documentation, and literature review. The study focuses on identifying both the visual characteristics and symbolic interpretations of the mosque’s ornaments. The findings reveal that the An-Nur Grand Mosque features two dominant types of ornaments: Arabic and Malay. These types are further expressed through two primary forms, geometric and floral designs. Arabic ornaments often reflect spiritual values and religious symbolism, while Malay ornaments incorporate local cultural identity and aesthetic sensibilities. Geometric patterns convey concepts of infinity and divine unity, while floral motifs symbolize growth, beauty, and the connection between nature and spirituality. This research contributes to the broader field of cultural and semiotic studies by demonstrating how architectural ornamentation in sacred spaces serves as a rich semiotic system that bridges religious ideology and local cultural expressions. The study underscores the importance of reading architectural elements as meaningful texts that reflect both universal and localized identities in Islamic art and architecture.

Abstract

Humans are inherently social beings, living in communities comprised of both men and women. In such social settings, various social issues, including immorality, often emerge. According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, there have been 9,584 reported cases of immoral behavior, with 1,963 male victims and 8,187 female victims. This alarming issue requires a comprehensive and contextually grounded solution. One such solution lies in the application of the moral and ethical teachings found in Surah An-Nur verses 30–31 of the Qur’an. This study aims to explore and describe the moral values embedded in these verses, as interpreted through two distinct tafsir approaches: the classical interpretation of Tafsir Al-Maraghi and the contemporary perspective of Tafsir Al-Misbah. The novelty of this study lies in its comparative approach, bridging traditional and modern interpretations to uncover a holistic understanding that addresses present-day moral challenges in Indonesia. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology within the framework of library research, this study analyzes and compares the aforementioned tafsir works. The findings indicate that the values conveyed in Surah An-Nur verses 30–31—such as the importance of lowering one's gaze (ghaddul bashar), maintaining modesty, and fostering mutual respect between genders—remain highly relevant in efforts to prevent immoral behavior in Indonesian society. By internalizing and implementing these Qur'anic values, it is possible to cultivate a generation that excels not only in knowledge and skills but also in strong moral character. Such individuals will be better equipped to resist immoral influences, face global challenges, and make positive contributions to the nation and the wider world.
