Abstract

Background: Leprosy is a disease caused by M. leprae infection, may affect the peripheral nervous system, skin and other tissues. Until recently, leprosy is still a health problem in Indonesia. Phenolic Glycolipid-1 (PGL-1) is a stable and unique component of M. leprae, and an antibody examination against this antigen may play a role in assisting early detection of subclinical stage leprosy (SSL) and treatment monitoring. Objective: This study aims to define the level of IgM anti-PGL-1 antibody in leprosy patients, household contacts and controls and their serology status  Methods: The examination of IgM anti-PGL-1 antibody was carried out on 52 leprosy patients, 95 people household contacts and 95 healthy controls. The data from subjects were then analyzed and tested using Kruskal-Wallis statistical test and a p-value <0.001 was obtained. Results: It was obtained that the levels of IgM anti-PGL-1 antibody significantly differed between leprosy, household contact and control groups (p<0.05). Most of the leprosy patients had seropositive status, contrary to dominant seronegative that was found in household contacts and control groups. In subgroup analysis, the IgM titer level did not significantly differ between household contacts and control groups (p=0.122). Conclusion: the IgM anti-PGL-1 antibody differed between leprosy and household contacts and control. IgM antibody titer may also depict a person's exposure status to M. leprae bacilli. Keywords: M. leprae, Leprosy, IGM anti-PGL-1 antibody, Household contacts.

Abstract

Chemical methods were used to synthesized cadmium sulfide thin films in a mixed phase which testing for wastewater treatment through the photocatalytic degradation. Specific region of light (UV) was used to remove the organic pollutant which commonly destroy the environmental such Crystal violet dye forming what we could it wastewaters. The testing solutions were degraded under visible-light irradiation using the CdS thin films. Structural studies of the CdS photocatalyst refer to the hexagonal and cubic phases with good crystallinity and uniformly and homogenous distributed over all the sites of support with less agglomerations.  The morphology analysis mostly shown induces porosity, which mostly enhance intercalating dyes. The optical band-gap energy of sample within film was 2.35 eV, which explained the high photcatalytic behavior in the degradation of the non-biodegradable Crystal violet dye. As accepted the semiconductor/ UV-light were succeed to declaration of day which shows good acceptable results. The surprised was the efficiency of degradation or deceleration was rises very high as compare with the same conditions of reaction in room temperature in addition to increases with raises of concentration from 0.5 to 4 g/L. Abstract

Curcumin is a molecule gifted from nature to improve human health by its multiple biological activities. However, the application of curcumin in therapeutics is limited mainly due to its poor aqueous solubility, insignificant chemical stability, and low cellular uptake. To address some of these drawbacks, eight analogues of curcumin were synthesized starting from simple molecules. Characterization of the chemical structures of these analogues was documented by interpretation of their IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectra. Biological activities of the synthesized analogues were studied by comparing their activities with those of curcumin. This biological assessment included examining the antioxidant capacity via DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity tests, and screening the preliminary antitumor activity against MCF-7 and HeLa cancer cell lines by MTT test. Depending on the resulted data, it was found that these analogues have the comparable biological activities but with better stability and water solubility in comparison with curcumin. It is postulated that such analogues may be useful clues to improve the therapeutic applications of curcumin. Keywords: Curcumin, Synthesis, Analogues, Antioxidant, Antitumor.

Abstract

Cantaloupe (Cucumis melo L.) is an important source of bioactive compounds, which are considered to be health beneficial. Chitosan and its derivatives have a wide range of applications, for example thickening, film formation, metal binding and antimicrobial activity. Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) contains various phytoconstituents such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds, terpenoids and essential oils, which may be responsible for the different biological activities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the combination of chitosan with lemongrass essential oil as edible coating to improve the quality and extend the shelf life of Cantaloupe (Cucumis melo L.) during storage. Cantaloupe fruits were coated in different formulas of chitosan: lemongrass essential oil (0.15%: 0.15%, 0.20%: 0.1%, 0.25%: 0.05%, respectively). The uncoated fruits were used as control samples. Then, cantaloupe fruits were preserved at ambient temperature (28°C) and cool storage (4°C). The effectiveness of edible coating in cantaloupe fruit quality and shelf life was evaluated by estimating weight loss, firmness, total soluble solids, total acidity, ascorbic acid, carotenoid content, microbial proliferation (total bacterial, yeast and mold) and sensory acceptability at beginning and during 16 days of storage. The results obtained showed that 0.20%: 0.1% (chitosan: lemongrass essential oil) as edible coating could reduced weight loss; maintained firmness, total soluble solids, total acidity, ascorbic acid and sensory score; delayed the change in cartenoid content and microbial proliferation. The coated fruits had a shelf life of 16 days (4oC) or 12 days (28oC) under storage. Keywords: Cantaloupe, Chitosan, lemongrass essential oil, Coating, Shelf life.
