Abstract

This literature review seeks to understand the difference in autonomic function of radial and ulnar nerve injuries after microsurgery. During this surgery, additional damage to nerves is also experienced. This research focused on peer-reviewed articles from Pubmed-NCBI database. This is a medical database which features medical peer-reviewed articles on various illnesses treatments and outcomes. The eligibility criteria used were that the article must be full text, published within the past 10 years, written in English language, and featured the keywords-radial nerve injury, ulnar nerve injury and microsurgery. There was no specific characteristic for participants as all individuals with injury were considered. The search from the database yielded 121 initial articles. Of this number, 33 were excluded for being editor comments and no full texts. This had led to 88 remaining articles which were further screened to remove articles written in other languages and those which were older than 10 years. This featured a total of 43 articles. Of this remaining total, only 30 articles were used. The other 15 were excluded as a result of research reliability issues. The procedures used in the articles featured a lot of limitations which questioned the validity of their results. This paper concludes with a summary of the analysis of the difference in autonomic function of the radius and ulna after microsurgery. Keywords: Autonomic function, Radial nerve, Ulnar nerve, Microsurgery.

Abstract

The ripe mangrove apple is a potential source of natural antioxidants owing to its significant antioxidant activities. Phytochemical analysis of fruit extract revealed the presence of carbohydrate, protein, flavonoid and phenolic compounds. It can enhance the capability of antioxidant human body and therefore reduce the risk of chronic diseases. It is sweet in taste and usually consumed fresh or made into juice. There is limited study mentioning to processing of this functional fruit. Therefore we explored a wine fermentation from mangrove apple (Sonneratia ovata) fruit by focusing on the effect of different variables such as sugar supplementation, innoculum size, fermentation temperature in the primary fermentation, and fermentation time and temperature in the maturation to mangrove apple (Sonneratia ovata) wine quality (%v/v alcohol; g/l titratable acidity; oBrix residual sugar; sensory score). Our results proved that the primary fermentation should be conducted with 12% sugar ratio, 0.25% Sacchromyces cerevisiae inoculum at temperature 30.0oC in 15 days. The maturation was adequate in 10.0oC for 3 weeks to get a pleasant flavor and aroma. Mangrove apple (Sonneratia ovata) wine also evaluated the antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content. Mangrove apple (Sonneratia ovata) wine could be considered as a healthy source of antioxidants and phenolics ideal for daily consumption. Keywords: Mangrove apple (Sonneratia ovata), Wine, fermentation, Sacchromyces cerevisiae, Antioxidant, Phenolic.

Abstract

Introduction:  ventilator associated pneumonia is one of the main reasons of death in patients under ventilator, especially those with impaired consciousness hospitalized in intensive care unit (ICU). Having anti-apoptotic, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects, atorvastatin can be effective in preventing pneumonia in patients with stroke who are under ventilator, while it is also prescribed to reduce cholesterol and accelerate recovery process in ischemia cases. The present study aims at investigating the preventive effects of atorvastatin on ventilator associated pneumonia among patients who suffer from stroke and are under the ventilator. Methodologies in the present study, 60 patients hospitalized in ICU unit under ventilator following an ischemic attack were divided to two groups of 30. The treatment group received a daily 40-mg dose of atorvastatin, while the control group didn’t. Then the occurrence of pneumonia was extracted for both groups during at least 14days of hospitalization, and the results were analyzed using SPSS20 software. Results the results of the study indicated that the amount of occurrence of pneumonia among patients treated by 40 mg atorvastatin was significantly lower than the patients in control group. Therefore prescribing daily 40 mg atorvastatin for the patients with ischemia in ICU unit who are incubated and are under mechanical ventilation would reduce ventilator associated pneumonia significantly. Conclusion atorvastatin has a significant reducing effect on occurrence of ventilator associated pneumonia in patients suffering from ischemic stroke in ICU unit, who are incubated and under mechanical ventilation, which will be proved clinically in the present study. Keywords: ventilator associated pneumonia, Cerebral ischemia, Atorvastatin.
