Abstract

Background: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Hypothyroidism play a distinct role in the suppression and reactivation of herpes viruses. Herpes simplex virus infections have been assumed as one of the factors that may trigger autoimmune thyroid diseases; however, IL-23 has an important role in the pathogenesis of several inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between thyroid hormones in hypothyroid state and the Herpes simplex virus status in such patients; besides detecting the role of IL-23 in these cases. Materials and Methods: The present study included 65 Iraqi female hypothyroid patients with age ranged between 26-54 years and 25 healthy controls with age ranged between 25-50 years. Serum samples were collected from the study groups. Levels of thyroid hormones (TSH, T4, and T3) were determined by using automated Chemiluminescence Immunoassay (CLIA) analysis system. The detection of herpes simplex virus IgG and IL-23 levels in the serum samples were determined by an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Results: The current study results revealed that serum IL-23 and HSV levels are increased significantly (P<0.001) in the hypothyroid patients group as compared with control. There was a significant positive correlation between TSH and (IL-23, HSV); also between IL-23 and HSV (P<0.01). Moreover, there was a significant negative correlations (P<0.01) between IL-23 with (T4, T3) and between HSV with (T4, T3).  Conclusion: The present study pointed to the association between thyroid hormones deficiency in Hashimoto thyroiditis cases and IL-23 levels through disruption of the patient’s immune system; and with Herpes simplex viruse-1by their role in the replication. Keywords: Hashimoto Thyroiditis, Hypothyroidism, Herpes Simplex Virus, IL-23.

Abstract

Sol-gel method was used to prepare two samples of mesoporous Silica (mSiO2) and zinc oxide- mesoporous silica (ZnO@mSiO2) in the presence of HydroxycetylHydroxy ethyl Diamonium Chloride (dehyquart) surfactant as template. The two adsorbents prepared were characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption, XRD and AFM techniques. The results show that the mSiO2 sample has a mesopores in the range 2- 8 nm with a high degree of ordering of the porous structure, while Zn@SiO2 sample has pore distribution in the range 2-50 nm. The adsorption ability of the two adsorbents to removal of Crystal Violet (CV) dye from aqueous systems has been studied using a batch experiments method to measure the adsorption as a function of contact time and adsorbent dose at the temperature 293 K. Adsorption isotherms were fitted with the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich models and the results show a best fitted for the two adsorbents, and the adsorption processes were physical adsorption type. The kinetic data were analyzed and found to match well with pseudo-second order kinetic model. Keywords: Mesoporous silica, Crystal Violet, Zn@SiO2, Adsorption isotherm.

Abstract

The present study was conducted on six healthy male’s hedgehog, to distinguish the normal histology of the abdomen skin. The hedgehogs were anesthetized by ketamine (15 mg/kg. body weight) injected intramuscular after scarfing of hedgehogs, the skinning of the ventral surface of the abdomen was carried out, then the skin specimens fixed in the formalin (10%). Routein histological processes were done. The histological structure of the hedgehog abdomen skin was revealed many invaginations of the skin folds projected from superficial surface; these folds had many bifurcation were divided by grooves, and the folds appeared as the ridges. The abdomen skins of hedgehog covered by keratinized squamous epithelium, the keratin layer consider as protective layer foe the superficial skin which represented the epidermis. Under lining the epithelium there was loose connective tissue that supported the superficial skin; and consisted of collagenous and elastic fibers as well as cellular elements such as fibroblasts, lymphocytes, myoid cells were distributed among collagen and elastic fibers which extended into the cores of the abdomen skin folds. Beneath the loose connective tissue, the dermal spines follicles were found and surrounded via a layer of smooth muscle fibers. Clusters of sweat glands were distributed deeply under the dermal spines follicles. Striated muscle fibers below the sweat glands. The striated muscle fibers were arranged; circular, longitudinal and oblique in the orientation, these muscle fibers which support the upper layer of the skin. The dermal papillae was absent in the hedgehog skin. Keywords: (hedgehog, Histology, Abdomen skin).

Abstract

The current comparative investigational work was performed to identify the reliability of the occlusal-caries-based (OC) detection using the laser fluorescence device (DD) and the traditional methods of visual-based inspection, probing-dependent detection, and periapical dental radiographs. Moreover, fissure sealant (FS) and fluoride-based topical application (FTA) was evaluated using the DD technique. Here, 60 patient molar teeth were selected for the current work from a school primary oral care center, Al-Najaf City during the years of 2016-2017. Those teeth were randomly divided based on the diagnostic tool used into VI, probing, dental x-ray, and DD (VPXD group, 40 teeth (females (n)= males (n) 6-7 years old) diagnosed as a positive sing or a negative sing for intact caries or an intact tooth respectively), FS application followed up with DD (FSD group, 10 teeth diagnosed before and after the application), and FTA followed up with DD (FTAD group, 10 teeth diagnosed before and after the application). The teeth were polished and then assigned to their diagnostic methods. The current work results identified that the DD was more reliable in detecting caries and evaluating FS and FTA than those in dental probe, VI, X-Ray. In conclusion, DD ensures a viable method for detecting protection of FS and fluoride application methods against caries. Keywords: DIAGNO dent, Fissure sealant, Fluoride, laser.
