Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to predict the in silico molecular interactions of bitter melon quercetin with GLP-1 receptors using the comparable compounds of myricetin and allosteric modulators. Methods: The in silico test was used to predict the quercetin molecular interactions by docking using the Molegro Virtual Docker computer program. The receptor used was human GLP-1, code PDB: 5VEX with allosteric modulators ligand (97V_1201 [A]). As part from predicting molecular interactions, this study also carried out the prediction of its pharmacokinetic properties (ADME) and the toxicity of quercetin and myricetin using the pkCSM online tool program. The data analysis was performed by comparing the docking bond energies between quercetin, the allosteric modulator ligands and the myricetin comparators at the target receptor. The lower the bond energy of the ligands to the target receptor, the more stable the bonds are. This can be used to predict the biological activity of the compound. Results: The in silico test results showed that the bond energy of quercetin = -70.2678 kcal/mol, myricetin = -105,298 kcal/mol and allosteric modulators = -126,992 kcal/mol. Conclusions: The above test results indicate that quercetin has antidiabetic potential by activating the GLP-1 receptor although it is lower than the myricetin and allosteric modulators. The results of the in silico test using the pkCSM online tool program showed that the quercetin compound had good pharmacokinetic properties and a low toxicity level.

Abstract

Background: Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is a collection of symptoms and signs due to obstruction in the superior vena cava (SVC). More than 90% of SVCS cases are caused by malignancy (lung, breast, intra-mediastinal organs) and vascular reconstruction surgery is the last resort in the management of SVCS. Decompression surgery still can be performed on all types of tumours. These case series aim to elaborate on the outcome of the jugulo-atrial bypass procedure in malignant mediastinal tumour with SVCS at Sanglah General Hospital, Bali, Indonesia. Case Description: In Case 1, Male 31-year-old, has chief complaint shortness of breathing accompanied by swelling on face, neck, and chest that has become worse since one month prior to admitted to the Sanglah General Hospital. A similar clinical finding was also found in Case 2, Male 53-year-old, with a productive dry cough and coughing up blood for more than two months and revealed an anterior mediastinal mass on CT-Scan. However, in Case 3 Male 68-year-old, his shortness of breath began after the history of lump on neck since 3 years ago. He was also diagnosed with the antiphospholipid syndrome and received oral anticoagulant therapy for 17 months. The sagittal, coronal, and axial view of chest CT scan with contrast showed an apparent demarcated heterogeneous mass in the anterior mediastinum with central necrosis. The calcification component was also found as a resulted in vena cava superior suppression on each case. The operative procedure was a median sternotomy with jugulo-atrial bypass procedure and followed by chemotherapy. The complete resolution of the anterior mediastinal mass as well as the improvement of clinical outcome were exhibited few weeks after treatment. Conclusion: Two of the three cases of malignant mediastinal tumour have been performed jugulo-atrial bypass surgery to reduce SVCS. From the histopathological examination, these three cases with SVCS were malignant mediastinal tumour. Jugulo-atrial bypass procedure was proven to reduce complaints of shortness of breath and swelling post-surgery. Keywords : SVCS, Malignant Mediastinal Tumor, Jugulo-Atrial By-Pass.

Abstract

There is a weakness in the psychological compatibility and physical abilities (the explosive ability and speed advantage) in some students and to contribute to improving the achievement in the long jump activity and in view of that most of the events, including the effectiveness of long jump depends mostly on the strength and speed in improving achievement, which called for researchers to study this phenomenon a scientific study, being a phenomenon that occurs for some students and lead to the decline of their levels and achievements, despite the continued training. The goal of the research to:To recognize the impact of programmed and integrative learning strategies of fragmented information in the development of psychological compatibility and explosive capabilities and distinctive speed and achieve the effectiveness of long jump for students.Identify which strategies have the advantage in developing psychological compatibility and explosive capabilities and distinctive speed and achieve the long jump activity of students.The researchers used the experimental approach in the design of the two equal groups. The research community is determined by the first stage students at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at the University of Babylon for the 2017-2018 academic year. The number of students is 92 students. The sample was randomly selected by 40 students. (The first with the integrated strategy for fragmented information, the second with the programmed learning strategy), the conclusions were:The first group (integrated strategy of fragmented information) developed psychological compatibility and explosive capabilities and distinctive speed and achieve the effectiveness of the long jump for students.The second group (programmed learning strategy) developed psychological compatibility and explosive capabilities and distinctive speed and the completion of long jump activity of students.There is a preference for the first group (integrated strategy of fragmented information) in the development of psychological compatibility and explosive capabilities and distinctive speed and to achieve the effectiveness of the long jump for students.Keywords: Integration of fragmented information programmed learning, Psychological compatibility and long jump activity.

Abstract

Having children is a dream for every married couple. However, this process is not that easy for 15% couples worldwide who suffer infertility. Infertility is the failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after twelve months of regular and unprotected intercourse. Half of infertility causes come from the man called male infertility. Male factors of infertility vary greatly from mild one like oligozoospermia to severe one like extreme oligozoospermia which make the natural pregnancy difficult to happen, hence a help from assisted reproductive technology is needed. In more extreme case like testicular agenesis, having children really becomes a necessity and it will bring bad news to him. Bad News (BN) refers to a condition of hopelessness, threatening life and body or anything which raises the patients’ anxiety about his future. In this case, male infertility can be categorized as BN since it causes loss of hope and anxiety. The process of Breaking Bad News (BBN) requires good communication skill. There were several BBN protocols formulated previously covering Advance preparation, Build relationships, Communicate well, Deal with the patient, Encourage emotion (ABCDE), Background, Rapport, Explore, Announce, Kindling, Summarize (BREAKS) and Settings, Perception, Invitation, Knowledge, Empathy, Strategy (SPIKES). Each protocol had been applied to other medical fields such as oncology, pediatric etc. Whilst its application on male infertility cases has never been published. Even if this protocol is able to be applied properly, it is capable to increase the patients’ knowledge, improve their psychological condition and maintain the threshold of hope for having children.Keywords: Male Infertility, Communication, Bad News, Breaking Bad News

Abstract

Aims: to assess the efficiency of bone replacements in peri-implant disorders formed in the rabbit tibia. Methods: Twenty-four rabbits used to receive 36 screws of implant in their tibia. A circular bone defect 6.1 mm in diameter/4 millimeter depth made in the rabbit tibia. Dental implant sgrew "4.1 mm × 8.5 mm" placed beyond formation of defect, offering a "2-mm space". These spaces were lauded either with blood clot (BC), particulate Bio-Oss(R) (PBO), or Bio-Oss(R) Collagen (BOC). Eight animals were euthanized after 30, 45, and 60 days. Histological and immunehistochemical analyses for protein expression of osteocalcin (OC), OPG, and RANKL, were estimated. Results: At 45 and 60 days, between the PBO and BOC categories and also in the PBO and BC categories, RANKL expression was significantly different. At 8weeks, there was higher significant relation of OPG expression in the PBO category than BC category. Conclusions: An indication of our data as compared to BC and PBO, BOC give good bone healing that was described by high OC, and OPG immunolabeling. So with PBO, BOC give hopeful biological characteristics supporting its plausible application in peri-implant spaces osteoconductive grafts filling.Keywords: Osseo integration, Bone replacements, Implant, RANKL, Osteocalcin.

around the implants. Some initial loss of bone around dental implants is generally expected. There is reason to believe that reflecting a mucoperiosteal flap promotes crestal bone loss in the initial phase after an implant has been inserted. The surgical placement of a dental implant fixture is constantly changing and in recent years, there has been some interest in developing techniques that minimize the invasive nature of the procedure, with flapless implant surgery being advocated. The purpose of this study was to compare the radiographic level of the peri- implant bone after implant placement between traditional flapped surgery and flapless approach depending on CBCT during 24 weeks healing period.  Materials and Methods: A total of 25 Iraqi patients with 46 implants aged 20-60 years .Were randomized into two groups: control group which involved 27 implants inserted by conventional flapped surgical approach and study group which involved 19 implants inserted by flapless surgical approach. The bone level was measured by CBCT for each implant at buccal and palata/ lingual sides at two times, immediately after implant placement (base line data), and after 24 weeks healing period. Results: There was no significant difference between study (flapless) and control (flapped) groups in the mean of total crestal bone resorption for buccal and palatal sides. Conclusions: Bone resoption around dental implants placed with conventional flap surgery compared to flapless surgery does not seem to be influenced during the healing period before implant loading.

Abstract

The effects of ciprofloxacin (Cipx) on the cytotoxicity of cyclophosphamide (CP), etoposide (VP-16), and combinations thereof on normal bone marrow stem cells in mice were studied. Cipx was administered prior to or after treatment with CP and VP-16. Chromosomal aberration (CA), micronucleus (MN) and mitotic index (MI) were used as markers.  CP, VP-16 and Cipx and their combinations were injected intraperitoneally at concentrations of 2, 20, 9.5 mg/kg, respectively. Control groups were injected with normal saline and DMSO solution. Cytogenetic analyses were carried out after 24 hrs of treatment. CP and VP-16 reduced MI and increased CA and MN; while Cipx did not produce significant cytotoxic effects when used alone. Additional cytotoxic effects were seen when Cipx was injected before CP and VP-16 combination.  Highest effect was observed when Cipx was injected after injecting combination of CP and VP-16 (p≤0.05).In conclusion; Cipx increased the cytotoxic effects of CP and VP-16 when used before and after treatments with combinations of CP and VP-16.Keywords: Cyclophosphamide; Etoposide; Ciprofloxacin; bone marrow; chromosomal aberration; micronucleus; Mitotic index; cytotoxicity.

Abstract

Recently, the mangosteen has been noted to be an abundant source of a class of polyphenols known as xanthones It has a variety of health promoting properties including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer activity. Mangosteen fruits have a storage and marketable postharvest life of not more than one week under tropical conditions. In order to have supply of this fruit between harvest seasons, which ranges from two to four months depending on local production, it is necessary to use postharvest techniques for the extension of mangosteen shelf life. Application of soy protein isolate as edible coating could be considered as a useful approach to maintain its product quality during preservation. Ojective of the present study focused on the effect of soy protein isolate coating on some physicochemical, microbial and sensory characteristics of mangosteen during preservation. Optimal results showed that weight loss, pH, total soluble solids, titratable acidity and ascorbic acid; total plate count; sensory characteristics could be maintained at appropriate levels by coating mangosteen with 1.5% soy protein isolate.Keywords: Mangosteen, Soy protein isolate, Coating, Preservation, Physicochemical, Microbial, Sensory.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin action, insulin secretion, or both. Many efforts have been made to overcome this disease but until now has not been fully successful. This study aimed at examining CD34+, TER119+VLA4+, B220+  cell population,  and stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1) expression in an attempt to correct homeostasis indiabetic mice model with active disease.Three different EPE doses were tested (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg BW).  The oral administration of EPE was conducted for 14 days. On day 15, the bone marrow cells were isolated and then subjected to flow cytometry analysis, and data was processed by One-way ANOVA (p < 0.05) and Tukey test using SPSS 16.0 for Windows. The results showed that administration of EPE with the doses of 50 and 100 mg/kg BW) potentially increased cell proliferation. In contrast, the doses of 200 mg/kg BW seem to be in potentially suppressing cell proliferation. Taken together, propolis, which is involved in the induction of proliferation, show a rather in low doses, while high dose will give a suppression effect on cell proliferation and differentiation. Therefore, the use of propolis for treatment should consider the appropriate dose.  Keywords: B220, CD34, Diabetes mellitus, SDF-1, TER-119+VLA-4+.

Abstract

The aromatic Schiff base with azo linkage (CHMB) has been synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopic techniques. The compound (CHMB) has been evaluated as carbon steel corrosion inhibitor at different concentrations (0.1, 0.5, 1 and 5 mM) and different temperatures (298-318 K). The corrosion inhibition efficiency was studied by Potentiodynamic polarization. The effects of concentration and temperature on the inhibition efficiency were studied by Potentiodynamic polarization measurements, the results showed that increasing concentration of (CHMB) increases the inhibition efficiency while increasing the temperature decreases it, the highest corrosion inhibition efficiency, 93.58% was recorded with 5 mM of CHMB at 298 K in 1 M HCl. The adsorption process was found to obey Langmuir isotherm, and the adsorption thermodynamic parameters were studied.Keywords: Carbon steel, Corrosion inhibitors, Azo, Schiff base, Organic inhibitors.
