Abstract

Background: Measurement of serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (sCOMP) concentration is expected to be new approach  for osteoarthritis early detection. Osteoarthritis has been linked to obesity as its risk factor. This study aimed to determine relationship between BMI and sCOMP in woman with symptomatic osteoarthritis. Methods: : A cross-sectional study was done using consecutive sampling. The study population comprised of female patients age 50-70 y.o who had menopause since last 1 year and symptomatic knee arthritis. Osteoarthiris were comfirmed by genu imaging. sCOMP concentration were determined in Clinical Phatology Laboratorium of Sanglah Hospital using ELISA technique. The body mass index was calculated using the standarized formula. Correlation test was used to determine the correlation between body mass indexes with sCOMP level. Results: From total of 68 participants, the mean age was 73.66 (SD 9.356), the mean BMI was 21.97 (SD 4.66), and the mean sCOMP concentration was 7.935 (SD 10.11). Significant correlations (p <0.01) occured for this sample. However, Spearman’s rho was quite low (r = -0.382), indicating only weak correlations. A higher BMI was associated with lower sCOMP concentration. Conclusion: The results prove the relationship between BMI and sCOMP concentration. Further research is needed to reveal causality between both variables.Keywords: Osteoarthitis, Women, BMI, sCOMP concentration.

Abstract

The study was conducted during December 2014 –December 2015 in ten mainly stations from Iraqi marshlands since been recorded dominated types of aquatic plants in study sites .Results showed that high intensity for aquatic plants  all months was observed at a rate of 73 % Typha sp. , followed Phragmitesaustralis impressive 65%  then Ceratophyllumdermersum 33 % less abundant for being non-indigenous , statistical results highest value to the standard appearance of species Mean±SD (0.999± 0.013 ) (0.480 ± 1). Evaluation of species of aquatic plants in marshes communities response to the change of climate, focusing on the type it , submerged ,emergent and floating and depending on differences and similarities with responses to factor , temperature , O2 , CO2 exposure, level rise water and other expected environmental alterations with natural weather in the region .Advantages environmental climate have an important influence on plant diversity of Iraqi marshes. Based on environmental factors ten ecological regions with the specific plant which is located   climate factors interact to plant influence distribution   and they play an important role in creating ecological biodiversity of Iraq.Keywords: Iraqi marsh, Bio monitoring, Distribution Aquatic plants.

Abstract

Due to teem and low cost ocher red soil in Hormoz Island (south of Iran), this study was conducted to investigate the efficiency of red soil on adsorption of cadmium from aqueous solutions. a series of steps for adsorption of cadmium on ocher were conducted which included the ocher selection/preparation, determination of chemical and physical characteristics of adsorbent, preparation of cadmium stokes, determine the equilibrium time, the effect of cadmium concentration, adsorbent dose, the effect of environmental factors (pH and temperature), and determine the adsorption kinetic and isotherm. raw ocher had better adsorption efficiency than processed type (74.33% vs. 35%), the main component of adsorbent was Fe2O3 (59.58%). The optimum conditions as dose, pH and temperature which respectively were as (20 g/L; 10; and 35 oC), the adsorption reach to 96%. The study of isotherm and kinetics showed that Cd adsorption on raw Ocher is more fitted to Freundlich isotherm and pseudo second order models. natural ocher of the island of Hormoz would be appropriate to remove the heavy metal, as no need to processing it is economical to use. As temperature has positive effect on Cd adsorption on ocher, this adsorbent can act more effective in hot climate.Keywords: Cadmium, Red soil, ocher, adsorption, Hormoz Island, aqueous solutions

Abstract

Glass-microscope slides were covalently modified with a common coupling agent of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) by silanization reaction. After activated with glutaraldehyde, ascorbic oxidase was immobilized on microscope slides. The modified slides were examined before and after activation with glutaraldehyde by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).The scanning electrochemical microscopy images of modified microscope slide have been used to detect the presence of the ascorbic acid oxidase as its confirm the direct electron transfer process in feedback mode experiments and provide that the enzyme is evenly immobilized on the modifies slide.Keywords: Catalytic activity, Ascorbate oxidase, Surface modification, APTES, Glutaraldehyde, SECM.

Abstract

The effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection on male fertility as assessed by sperm quality is still in controversy in various studies. On the other hand, HIV seropositive men who are stable under the influence of antiretroviral therapy (ARV) experienced an increase in quality and life expectancy that allow them to have offspring. This study aims to investigate the sperm quality of HIV seropositive men in Indonesia. In addition, this study also compared sperm quality in HIV seropositive men who were stable under the influence of ARV (case group) with HIV seronegative men (control group). Semen samples from HIV seropositive male patients at the HIV Integrated Clinic, Ciptomangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia were collected and analyzed for sperm in the laboratory, including: volume, pH, concentration, motility, morphology and sperm vitality. Abstract

For the first time, this study reports the presence of New Delhi Metallo-β-Lactamase gene (NDM-1 gene) among Carbapenem resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates in Baghdad / Iraq. Sixty six E. coli clinical isolates were collected from Baghdad Teaching Hospital/ Medical city in Baghdad. The isolates were obtained from different clinical specimens including urine, wound swabs, sputum and blood. All isolates were identified by Vitek-2 system and the susceptibility test to different antibiotics was also done by Vitek-2 system.  The results showed most isolates under the study were multidrug resistance and all 66 E. coli isolates had 100% resistance to Ampicillin. The most effective antibiotic against E. coli isolates was Imipenem followed by Amikacin. The results also showed that 5 (7.6%) isolates out of 66 E. coli were resist for Imipenem (Carbapenem resistant E. coli isolates).  By using conventional PCR, the blaNDM-1 gene was detected in 2 (40%) isolates, out of 5 Carbapenem resistant E. coli isolates and the3 (60%) isolates of Carbapenem resistant E. coli don’t harboring bla NDM-1 gene. Sequencing of (983 bp) blaNDM-1 amp icon was carried out by Macrogen DNA Sequencing and aligning of the obtained sequences with the reference strains in Gen Bank confirmed the correct identification of blaNDM-1 in Carbapenem resistant E. coli. The data sequencing revealed (100%) homology with reference strains in Gen Bank and the data of blaNDM-1 sequencing was submitted to the Gen Bank of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) under the accession number (KY966040).Keywords: Escherichia coli, Carbapenem resistance and bla NDM-1 gene genes.

Abstract

AbstractCongenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia (CPT) remains one of the most challenging problems confronting the orthopaedic surgeon. The operative results are frequently less than successful; many cases require several surgical procedures, and a significant number of them ending in amputation. The purpose of this study was to access the surgical results, complications, secondary procedures, and long-term results of free vascularized fibular graft (FVFG). We reported a case of a 5 years old boy complained unable to walk, was diagnosed as Congenital Pseudarthrosis of the left tibia. The patient had been doing several operation procedure, finally performed FVFG. After 5 months follow up, ORIF with intramedullary Kirschner wire provided stability, and acceptable alignment resulted in bony union. However, even achieving union of pseudarthrosis is not enough for the resolution of the disease. Abstract

One of the plants empirically used by the Pasemah tribe in South Sumatra, Indonesia,  as a hair grower is the green cincau (Indonesian) leaf (Cyclea barbata Miers.). Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the anti-alopecia activity and its compound content from the n-hexane fraction of the C. barbata leaves. Methods: Green grass jelly (C. barbata Miers.) Extracted with 96% ethanol and fractionated with water, n-hexane and ethyl acetate. The concentration of ethanol extract was diluted to 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% and all fractions were tested on rabbits by the modified Tanaka method. All data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA. Results: Test results showed that the ethanol extract of green grass jelly leaves had the activity of stimulating hair growth starting at a concentration of 15%. It was found that the n-hexane fraction had the best activity compared to other fractions and positive control (minoxidil 2%).Further tests using IR and LC-MS spectrophotometers found that the n-hexane fraction contained 1,4-dimethyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydro-8H-pyrrolo[2’,3’:3,4]azepino[2,1-b]quinazolin-8-one. Conclusions: Ethanol extract and hexane fraction at concentrations of 15% and above were found to have anti-alopecia activity. The compound contained from the hexane fraction 1,4-dimethyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydro-8H-pyrrolo[2’,3’:3,4]azepino[2,1-b]quinazolin-8-one] (C22H18N3O) which was thought to cause properties hair growth.Keywords: Hair loss, Anti-alopecia, Green grass jelly, Cyclea barbata Miers,  1,4-dimethyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydro-8H-pyrrolo[2’,3’:3,4]azepino[2,1-b]quinazolin-8-one.

Abstract

Introduction: Aging skin is most prevalent due to exposure to sunlight, especially UV-B rays. UV-B rays which stimulate the formation of free radicals are highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons that can cause elevated levels of MMP-1, causing a decrease in the amount of skin collagen. This study was an experimental animal study with a post-test only control group design.  Method: A total of 36 Wistar rat were divided into 2 groups, each consisting of 18 Wistar rat, the control group was smeared with placebo cream and the treatment intervention group was smeared with passion fruit seed extract cream 100%, all groups were exposed to UV-B with a total dose of 840 mJ / cm ² for 4 weeks, then an excision was carried out for the examination of dermis collagen amount and level of MMP-1.  Result: The results of the comparative analysis of the two groups using independent t-test showed that there were significant differences between the two groups, the mean level of MMP-1 and the mean amount of collagen with p <0.05. The mean level of MMP-1 and the mean amount of collagen treatment in intervention group were 2.32% and 70.32%, and control group showed the mean level of MMP-1 and the average amount of collagen at 2.99% and 63.63% respectively.  Conclusion: the administration of passion fruit seed extract cream inhibited the increase of level of MMP-1 and the decrease of total collagen level in Wistar rat skin was exposed to UV-B.Keywords: Passion fruit, MMP-1, collagen, Skin.

Abstract

Background: Bladder endometriosis (BE) is a form of Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis (DIE) which affects approximately 1% of women with endometriosis. BE commonly presents with lower urinary tract symptoms such as frequency, dysuria, hematuria, and, less frequently, bladder pain and urgency. The diagnosis and treatment of this condition could be difficult and requires multidisciplinary care. Due to overall rare cases, BE might pose a challenge, both to diagnose and treat. This article aims to share an experience in order to increase awareness and insight about BE for practising gynaecologist and urologist. Case: A Thirty-one years old woman, nulligravida, complained of painful, bloody stained urine, which occurs during menstruation since married for the last 18 months. Previously patient had a regular menstruation cycle with moderate pain and normal menstrual volume and no history nor any specific symptoms of disease. Gynaecological examination showed no remarkable finding. Ultrasound scan (US) by gynaecologist showed a mass protruded from the posterior wall of bladder. Cystoscopic finding by a urologist showed an adenomatous reddish nodular mass, and TUR was conducted. Pathological examination showed a cystitic glandulare. After three months temporary improvement, the symptoms reoccur. The patient underwent US and CT scan, again showed a mass, and another two rounds of TUR were conducted, to remove all residual mass. After three surgeries with no significant improvement, a team of gynaecologist and urologist were set to conduct a laparoscopic partial cystectomy with cystoscopy guidance to achieve complete excision of the lesion. The modified technique, which results in symptoms-free recovery, will be described in detail. Conclusion: BE could be challenging both in diagnostic and treatment. Cystoscopy and TUR are not recommended to diagnose and manage the lesions. A multidisciplinary approach is needed, and concomitant Laparoscopy with cystoscopy for partial cystectomy might give a satisfying outcome.Keywords: Bladder Endometriosis, Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis, Cystoscopy, Laparoscopic partial cystectomy, Lower urinary tract symptoms.
