Abstract

This study identifies the translation procedures used in Indonesian subtitles of TED-Ed YouTube education videos in the level of nouns or noun phrases. This research used descriptive qualitative method where the researcher listed and identified the procedures found and described each of them according to the theory of Newmark (1988, p. 81-93). The objects and the sources of data in this research are only two videos in the channel specifically selected by the researcher, focusing on one translator with most contributions to the TED-Ed Indonesian community as of August 2019: Dewi Barnas. The subtitles are then downloaded and analyzed. The first video (The loathsome, lethal mosquito) has 32 noun phrases belonging to specific translation procedures, whereas the second video (The benefits of a bilingual brain) has 80 noun phrases translated that way. Some procedures that appear quite often are: Naturalization, Transference, Expansion, Reduction, Synonymy, Functional Equivalent, Paraphrase and Transposition.

Abstract

A learning process is a complex condition which needs consideration to make it goes well. So does the textbook being an important component that should be available in a school. Meanwhile textbook is the book of a certain subject that produced knowledge needs for the students which contained the materials of learning, the textbook also held a significant role in the learning process. The teachers as educators used textbooks to meet the needs of students learning targets and as the teaching advice in planning students’ activities in the classroom. Meanwhile, the student used textbooks as learning media in obtaining the updated information to help them enrich their ability of lesson subjects. Regarding the textbook issue, the researcher conducted the study of textbooks in teaching English at Junior High School in Jambi City by implemented a Qualitative descriptive approach in gaining the data. The technique used to gain the data was an interview. The data were analyzed descriptively. The respondent of the research was three English teachers who taught in each grade of students’ level. The results showed that the teachers perceived the textbook positively and it shows that the textbook used was not limited to the teachers to create another initial step to improve the students’ ability in understanding English even after considerin several minus aspects. The weakness of the main book makes the teacher uses other additional books in learning so that variety and sufficient material in the learning. Key word: Textbook, Textbook Used, Teachers’ Perceived

Abstract

The problem of this research was how is the students' perception and is there any relationship between English achievement of high school students and their perception toward English teacher leadership style, the aims of this research were to identify students’ perception toward the teacher's leadership styles at Senior high school 1 of Talang Kelapa and to identify the relationship between English achievement and their perception toward English teacher leadership style at Senior high school 1 of Talang Kelapa. This research was conducted at Senior high school 1 of Talang Kelapa. The sample became taken through the use of stratified cluster random sampling. This research method is descriptive quantitative. For accumulating the information, this research through the use of questionnaire and documentation, all sample was given the questionnaires.

Abstract

The covid-19 has an impact on the educational field. The learning process has changed from conventional to online learning. Several applications are offered to help educators in doing online learning. One of them is Whatsapp application. Whatsapp is one of the information media that is widely used by many people, including teachers, lecturers, and students. In subsequent developments, Whatsapp application is not only used to communicate and exchange messages, but Whatsapp is also used for educational purposes. The researcher conducted the study of using Whatsapp in teaching and learning activities during Covid-19 at English Education Study Program Jambi University by implemented a qualitative approach with a case study design in gaining the data. Interviews with four English Lecturers were used to obtain data and evidence about how do they perceive the use of Whatsapp in the teaching and learning process during covid-19. The results of data analysis revealed that all of the lecturers have many positive perceptions rather than the negative one about using Whatsapp to do online learning during covid-19. Using Whatsapp in online learning during covid-19 is easy because lecturers can monitor learning at any time, it does not consume a lot of quotas, and many features available on Whatsapp make it easier for lecturers to take the usefulness of these features to carry out online learning activities such as discussion, sharing learning material in various formats, giving assignments, collecting assignments, giving review or feedback and for academic planning and scheduling.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate most of metacognitive strategies used by fifth semester students of English Education Study Program in academic year 2020/2021 and also investigate their metacognitive awareness. Eighty-nine students were participated in this study including 27 males and 62 females. The current study used quantitative approach with survey design in which the author used a questionnaire to evaluate students’ responses. Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) was used to investigate the reading strategies used by students while reading English texts. Furthermore, it also used to assess metacognitive reading awareness of students. The findings reveal that the participants’ overall use of metacognitive reading strategies (Global, Problem-solving, and Support reading strategies) was at a high to medium level. There are 12 strategies used with high frequency while 18 strategies used with medium frequency and no strategy reported using low frequency. Among of these three metacognitive categories, problem solving appears to be the most strategies used by participants and followed by global reading and support reading. The present study also reveals that they are have high- to low-level awareness of metacognitive strategies. From the interview, also found that most students rely more on google translate.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  Sari, Mella Lidyana. 2021. The Realization of Leech’s Maxims in the Students’ Interactions. A Graduating Paper of English Department. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, The University of Jambi in Academic Year 2020/2021. The first supervisor is Dr. Dra. Rachmawati, M. Pd. The second supervisor is Tubagus Zam Zam Al Arif, S. Pd., M. Pd.     This research aimed to identify the types of politeness maxims realized by the students in the classroom interactions. This research used a qualitative method. The subject of this research was the students from regular 001 2017 in the 5th semester in the English Department at the University of Jambi. There are 28 students as the participants of this study that consists of 27 females and 1 male. There is a research instrument in collecting the data, namely audio recording. Besides, there are some steps of analyzing the data that were data reduction, transcribing, identification, classification, and data display. The findings of this research were five politeness maxims realized by the students, namely: tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim. On the other hand, the students have realized the five politeness maxim proposed by Leech. Besides, the most maxim realized by the students is the tact maxim and the modesty maxim is the only maxim that did not realize by the students in interactions. So, the students have realized the maxims 20 times in 2 courses for 4 meetings.     Keywords: Politeness Principles, Students’ Interactions.

Abstract

This is review related literature study which highlight regarding phenomena in the education field caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. This study is focused on the teachers’ experiences while designing lesson plan for online learning in the Covid-19 pandemic. This paper presents several studies related to the process of designing learning activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The first discussion in this study is the elaboration of a theoretical framework regarding the process of designing a lesson plan amid the online learning in the covid-19 pandemic. The second discussion is about the problems faced by teachers when designing lesson plans in online learning. In addition, in this review of related literature, the researcher also provides a theoretical description of the online learning process from previous researchers which is summarized clearly and concisely. The researcher hopes that this paper can contribute and provide information to the interests of education, teachers and other education stakeholders. Abstract

The present study identified the level of learning autonomy of English study program students at the University of Jambi. The quantitative method with the explanatory design was the method of the research. There was one instrument that was used to obtain the data, namely questionnaires. There were 403 in the academic year 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 but only 120 students participated in this research. Based on the discussion, there were 2 categorized of the level of learning autonomy students of the English study program at the University of Jambi. There are high levels and moderate levels of learning autonomy. The majority of all students in the English study program of the University of Jambi who answered the questionnaire were at a high level of learning autonomy. The percentage of the level of learning autonomy students of English education program at university of Jambi were seventy nine percent a high level of learning autonomy and twenty one percent a moderate level of learning autonomy. Meanwhile no one students identified a low level of learning autonomy.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to explore the students’ perception of using Mind Mapping in writing descriptive text. Also, this study aims to describe the advantages and disadvantages of using Mind Mapping in writing descriptive text. This research used mix-method design, in which the data were collected through questionnaire and interview. The participants of this study were the students of SMA Negeri 1 Muara Bungo and also interviewed an English teacher. The data obtained from interviews were analyzed. There were three major points, first students’ interest in using mind mapping in writing descriptive, second the difficulty in using mind mapping for students, third improve students’ writing skills. According to the data, mind mapping had a positive impact on students’ writing skills i.e. students’ better understanding and know what they are doing. In conclusion students think that mind mapping is interesting, and have advantages and disadvantages. The implication of this research is to increase students awareness in using mind mapping for writing.
