Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out the classroom language used by the Primary teachers in EFL classroom. The sample of the research was 3 teachers in grade 2, 5 and 6 at Palm Kids Elementary School of Lubuklinggau. The samples were taken through non probability as the technique of sampling. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research and the data were collected by using observation, interview, and documentation(field note and video recording). The result revealed that Classroom Languages used by the English teachers’ were: Exclusive use of L1, Exclusive use of TL, and Use of L1 immediately followed by the equivalents in the other language. In the other English teachers’ responded towards are the classroom language used helping the students understood the meaning, made the students easier to understood the material, helped students to understand what English said, helped to explain the material more detail in teaching and learning process and made the students have to master English well.

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the language use of Padang, Javanese and Lubuklinggau ethnic to show their identity in talking about food in Lubuklinggau community. The research was a descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research was the informants from Padang, Javanese, and Lubuklinggau ethnic that live and has become the citizen in Lubuklinggau. It was done through social network or ‘friend of friend’ technique by Milroy and Milroy. The data collection techniques in this study were done through three techniques; they are Participation Observation, Recording and Noting Techniques. Some ethnographic interviews were also carried out to support the observational data. The result of this research showed three findings including, 1) pride to the food as the part of culture, 2) promoting foods to describe some cultural events, and 3) identifying power through taste. The research is highly expected to be the valuable reference for other researchers to conduct language research in Lubuklinggau.

Abstract

This study investigates moral values in the Little Fires Everywhere novel by Celeste Ng. The researcher investigates moral values through novels because today the moral crisis also occurs in the world of education. Researchers want to find out whether they can learn moral values through the novel or not. Based on the investigation, researchers used novels to find moral values. The classification of moral values has concerned with motherhood, bravery, love, togetherness, honesty, independent, discipline, wise, and diligent. The researcher concludes that the findings suggest that some moral values can be learned in the novel entitled Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a complex process, it does not happen automatically. The process of comprehension begins when the reader encounters some new content, working memory is activated in order to capture the information already stored in long-term memory. Among some factors that influence students’ reading difficulties are low prior knowledge, lack of vocabulary and rate or fluency in reading. The reader is really required to consistent in maintaining reading rate of the text understanding and focus attention or concentrate fully on reading in order to understand the discourse content as a whole. In increasing the students’ reading ability, technology can be used as teaching tool. They are computer, mobile phone, tablet, or LCD. It has a big influence in education especially teaching reading. Most of students have experience reading a text from those technologies, or it can be said reading a text on screen, in their daily life. Therefore the objectives of this research was conducted to know the effect of using screen text in improving the students’ reading rate and reading comprehension. The population is students at English Education Study Program of Baturaja Univesity in academic year 2018/2019 and 36 students as sample. The research method was pre-experimental design, with pre-test and post-test, which to know the improvement after giving the treatment. Tests were used in collecting the data, silent reading rate test and reading comprehension test. Based on the result, it found that screen text have not only affected students’ reading rate but also comprehension.

Abstract

This research reviews the use of code-mixing performed by students and lecturers in STAIN Kerinci, Jambi. Using qualitative approach, with some observations and interviews as the data collection technique, the researchers explore students and lecturers’ motivations in demonstrating code-mixing. The researchers also gather their perceptions toward the employment of code-mixing in speaking subject. It is found that there are some problems that make the students and lecturers turn to code-mixing during learning process. In fact, it because such phenomenon eases the learning process itself. Based on the discussion and conclusion, although code-mixing has positive impacts on the participants, the researcher suggested that the lecturer should use English frequently and keep controling and motivating the students to acquire English more.

Abstract

Writing scientific article is one of the ways to develop teacher professionalism. However, writing scientific article remains a problem for some Islamic High School Teachers. To explore about the problem, a preliminary research was conducted. Focus Group Discussion was used to gather the data. The result showed that most of the Islamic High School teachers who became the participants of the research never publish a scientific article because they get difficulties not only in exploring the ideas but also in writing the article itself. The teachers admitted that writing scientifically is not their habit. Thus, encouraging those teachers to write scientifically is highly necessary and supportive atmosphere among teachers should be developed. It takes time to develop a belief that writing and publishing scientific article would help the participant teachers developing their professionalism.

Abstract

The Indonesian needs to improve at least in the sector of the ability to communicate in business using English. Secretary, included as one component of the administrative ranks in the business world. English for basic operational level is one of the supporting competencies in almost all of the Standards, including in the SKKNI of company service sector for office administration and secretary. This research seek “How is the current syllabus of English for profession for secretary administration program at IPI Leppindo designed?, How does the current syllabus reflect the needs of student, needs of stakeholders and the standards of SKKNI?, and What component are needed to develop syllabus in order to satisfy the needs of students, the needs of stakeholders and the standards of SKKI?”. It was a qualitative evaluation research. The data was obtained by interview, questionnaire, documentation, and observation. The minimum content of the syllabi stated in Paragraph 3 Article 12 of the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 49 Year 2014 about National Standard of Higher Education has not been fulfilled. Furthermore, the study program has not adopted the Degree of the Minister of Labor and Transmigration Number Kep. 195/MEN/IV/2007 about The Establishment of Indonesian National Labor Competency Standards of Company Service Sector for office. The present situation analysis, strategy, and deficiency analysis were not paid attention by the institution. The results of means analysis is not matched with what has been stantdardized in the SKKNI of office administration sector for secretary administration (2007).

Abstract

This action research was aimed to describe on how was teaching speaking for general purpose by integrating English phonology contextual-based. This action research carried out by the lecturers through cyclical action in order to overcome teaching cases occurred in the classroom. This research was divided into two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four meetings. Each cycle used four phases. They were planning, action, observation and reflection. At the planning phase, the researchers made the research plan. At action phase, the researchers did teaching based on lesson plan that has been formulated. Furthermore, the work reflected to see the strengths and weaknesses as a reference for the next plan. The subject of the research was students of English program. The numbers of the subject of this research were twenty five students of English program. The data were obtained by doing observation and test. In observation, researchers looked at students’ attitude in speaking. Tests were conducted to determine the student's skill in speaking. Based on the data analysis, it’s found that the percentage level of students’ speaking performance increased from the first cycle to the second cycle, and students were motivated to be more active in speaking activity. In the first cycle, seven students were in the category of a very high level of understanding and very active, on the second cycle increased to 14 students are at a very high level of understanding and very high activity. This percentage of improvement increased 28% from the first cycle to the second cycle. Activeness of students in the learning process will lead to high interaction between students and lecturers or between students and colleagues. It could be concluded that the integrated English phonology contextual-based in speaking for general purpose can enhance student performance in speaking and the activeness in learning.

Abstract

The current research serves to portray the interlacing maxims which are reflected in the English Department students’ verbal communication and to depict the politeness which is manifested in the realization of those maxims holistically on the basis of the existing context of speech. The research is designed in the descriptive- qualitative-interpretative by means of the interactive model. This model comprises three research lines, namely: data reduction, data display, and data conclusion/ verification. The data for the present research were gathered repeatedly up to they are exhausted. In terms of data reduction, it is carried out by decreasing the unnecessary utterances or by maintaining the utterances that confirm the graciousness. The utterances that confirm the maxims and graciousness are displayed for having the analysis. The analysis are verified several times up to the researchers come at the equal conclusion. Accordingly, the research engages a group (class) of students as the research participants and it reveals the sequence of maxims, i.e., (1) the Tact maxim, (2) the Generosity maxim, (3) the Approbation maxim (4) the Modesty maxim, and (5) the Agreement maxim conveyed in the diverse contexts by the English Department students at Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Jambi University.
