English for Economics is needed to prepare students to master business English and English as an international language. Writing is as the focus of English skill in this study. To support good English writing, Economics content mastery is needed before learning English. Learner’s autonomy in the process of writing is also needed for writing development. In this study, economics content mastery and learner’s autonomy were identified to perceive the effect on the competence in English writing. The method used was multiple linear regressions as there were two independent variables in this study. Closed-ended questionnaire was used as the instrument. The result from linear regression showed that there were partial effects and simultaneous effect of economics content mastery and learner’s autonomy towards English writing competence. It means that H1, H2, and H3 were accepted and Ho was rejected in which there were significant effects among the variables. It can be interpreted that economics content while studying English for Economics and learner’s autonomy in terms of independently learning English writing were significantly needed in order to enhance English writing competence. The practical implication from this study is the students do not only need to learn English, but also learn Economics content and develop independent learning for autonomy learning in the process of English for Economics learning activities. Abstract

Compliment is one kind of speech act where the speaker expresses his/her feeling toward the hearer. The present study investigates compliment strategies employed by speakers, both male and female to male and female addressees. It also attempts to see the common strategies and the syntactic patterns used by male and female EFL students in delivering a compliment. Three males and three females are chosen as the participants based on their speaking scores since the data are gathered by means of an oral discourse completion test which includes 12 items. The findings reveal that in term of compliment strategies, males employ explicit, implicit, and zero- realization strategies, while females only offer direct and zero-realization strategy. In expressing the explicit one, both males and females use the first pattern “NP looks/is (really) ADJ” more often than other patterns. Overall, the present study points out that female students are the most frequent in uttering the compliments rather than males, but there is only a slight difference among them. Key words: gender, speech act, compliment, compliment strategy

There were 3 students participating in one to one evaluation, 9 students in small group and one class (34 students) in field test. There were also two validators in reviewing the Islamic-based reading materials in genre-based context. One was expert of content and another one was expert of instructional design. The result of experts judgment showed that the product was valid with average score was 89.2 categorized in good validity. The product was practical with average score in one to one evaluation was 84.3 and in small group phase was 86.8. The potential effect of the product could be seen from the average score of students’ achievement in field test. The score was 92.8 meaning that the score was higher than the criterion of minimal mastery (KKM) of English subject in MTsN Model Kota Jambi (75). Therefore, the product had potential effect categorized in very good level.
