Abstract

A study of factors affecting gestation period was made by statistically analyzing the data relating to 38 calvings of Hissar cattle in BPT & HMT Serading Sumbawa. The average length of gestation period was found to be 289.87 ± 6.42 for all calves, 289.38 ± 6.48 days for males dan 290.71 ± 6.24 for females. Females calves were carried 1.33 days longer than males, the difference, however, tended not to be significant. Calvings were distributed throughout the year, the percentage of calvings was lower (28.95%) during wet season than that of dry season (71.05%). The percentage of calvings both in males and  females  were  found  to  be  higher  during  dry  than  wet  seasons.  It  is  concluded, therefore, that sex does not appear to influence gestation period, while season of calving was found to be responsible in causing variation in the length of gestation period.

Abstract

The effect of high (28oC) and low (14oC) temperature on thyroid hormone production were studied in five male sheep since the activity of thyroid releasing hormone (TRH) cell in the hypothalamus that influence the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) production and release can be affected through the temperature regulatory center. The aim of this study were to measure the iodine (the core of thyroid  hormone)  needed  in  the  different  temperatures,  T4 (thyroxine) production, T4 and T3 (triiodotironine) concentration. Two experiments were performed  in  both  condition  to  investigate  the  thyroidal 125 I  uptake  and  to measure  T4 production.  The  sheep  were  shorn  at  the  beginning  of  each adaptation period (22o C). The first  treatment was  high  temperature and  the second treatment was low temperature. The experiments were done at least five weeks of each temperature. The mean of rectal temperatures during the warm period were significantly higher than that in the cold period. The feed intake during the warm period tend to decrease significantly, but there was no increase during the cold period. The absolute iodine uptake (AIU) over 24 hours was markedly increased during the second period (7.94±1.37 -g/24 hr) compare to the first period (1.65±0.13 -g/24 hr). It means that cold exposure has a potential to stimulate the thyroid gland in order to uptake more iodide. The mean of T4 concentration  was 51.6±2.1 ng/ml during the warm and 61.2±5.5 ng/ml four weeks after shift to the cold period and did not differ, but four weeks later the concentration  was  significantly  increased  (77.4±1.47)(33%).  The  same  pattern occurred to the T3 concentration that the four weeks after shifting the level of T3 was not significantly increased from value of 0.39 ng/ml to value of 0.51 ng/ml, eight weeks after shifting the T3 value (0.65 ng/ml) was significantly rose. Abstract

The  research  was  aimed  to  find  out  the  labor  employment  from  farmer  and  duck veterinarian family at farmer working pattern of rice plantation at Air Hangat Regency. The research was held by using survey method. The samples were 3 villages which were taken by purposive sampling method with determined criterion that the villages have main effort at rice plantation  as well as feeding ducks as secondary effort. The villages are Koto Majidin  Hilir  Village,  Majidin  Mudik  Village  and  Tebat  Ijuk  Village.  While,  the respondents were the veterinarian who were chosen by using Simple Random Sampling Technique.  The  number  of  respondents  is  determined proportionally  based  on  the population number of ducks at each village; there were 20 respondents at Majidin Hilir village, 15 respondents at Majidin Mudik village and 10 respondents at Tebat Ijuk village. The total number was 45 respondents. The research period is based on Effective Working time  and  the  labors  are  counted  based  on  Man  Base  Labor.  Next,  the  collected  data  is processed descriptively. The research result showed that the number of family labor was 57,39  persons  per  plant  season,  while  the  family  labor  who  are  employed  was  50,69 persons per plant season. Thus the rest of family labor was 6,70 persons per plant season.

Abstract

It  is  important  to  maintain  meat  characteristics  after  slaughtering  because  its relationship  with  preferences  and  economics  values of  meat  and  meat  product.    Salt addition  is  an  alternative.    The  aim  of  this  research  was  to  observe  influence  of  salt addition  on  meat  characteristics  during  the  first  7  day  of  post  mortem  aging.    Meat sample was divided into three groups of salt added treatments : 1) without salt addition, 2) salt added at one  day prior to aging, and 3) salt added every day along aging period.  The results showed that salt added at the zero day was to increase pH, solubility of salt-soluble  protein,  and  water  holding  capasity  (WHC)  to  a higher  level  compared  to  the other two treatments.  Although salt  addition may increased the meat characteristics, decreasing these characteristics could not be avoided when the meat stored for 7 day post mortem aging.

Abstract

This research was aimed to study the breeding result between Lurik chicken versus Merawang  and  Komering  chicken  and  between  Merawang and  Komering  chicken..  Experimental  variables  were  taken  in  this  research were  egg  production,  egg  weight, fertility, hatched weight, daily weight gain, feed efficiency, chicken feather colour, comb shape, leg colour, skin and meat colour. Evaluated data was observed from the breeding of Lurik, Merawang and  Komering chickens, progeny of Lurik versus Merawang, progeny of Lurik versus Komering and progeny of Komering versus Merawang. Observed data was analysed by addition, persentage and deviasi standard (X ± sd) (Steel dan Torrie, 1993). T test  was  used  to  compare  egg  production,    egg  weight,  fertility,  hatched  weight,  daily weight gainand  feed efficiency  among the breeding treatments using  Siegel instruction (1994). Based on the research, it could be concluded : 1) egg weight and hatched weight of merawang were  better than Lurik, Komering, progeny of Lurik versus Merawang, Lurik versus Komering  and Merawang versus Komering, 2) The Productivity of breed of Lurik versus Merawang was higher than the breed of Lurik versus Komering and Merawang versus Komering. 3)  The breed of Komering versus Lurik was not signifivantly different in  increasing  of  egg  production  and  decreasing  of  feed  conversion.  4)    There  was  no difference of feed comsumption between Merawang, Komering and progenys of Merawang and Komering versus Lurik.
