Abstract

The phenomenon of interfaith marriage has been analyzed with the approach of theology, sociology, law, politics, and public policy. The original contribution of this study is its effort and aim to approach this phenomenon with psychological perspective. This study placed the level of one’s identification towards sexual values as predictors for his/her perceived risk of interfaith marriage, of which the values cannot be separated from metropolitan culture. This research is a quantitative research by employing predictive correlational design. The samples were 271 students (99 men, 172 women; Mage = 20.59 years, SDage = 1.67 years) from five campuses in and around Jakarta. Research data analyses, by using multiple linear regression, show results which indicate that there is interaction between the gender with sexual values in influencing the risk perception. There are differences between men and women in terms of correlation between the two variables. In men, sexual values are not able to predict the perceived risk. In the Moslem women, two sexual values, i.e. absolutism and hedonism, are able to predict it. The results provide new insights regarding the relationship between sexuality with religion and marriage, particularly in urban areas in Indonesia.

Abstract

The indigenous Mentawaians, who reside on Siberut Island, the archipelago off the west coast of Sumatera, are located in communities whose culture and cosmology stem from the traditions of Arat Sabulungan. The guidance is valuable for the social relation of the community, nevertheless the practise subordinates certain groups in society, especially women. For example, the gender roles in particular for women stem from the traditional norms of Arat. However it is essentially a social construct that favours men, and has been perpetuated through cultural practices. The continuing position of women is being subordinated to male dominance, which has led to resistance from women. Male dominance built on truth claims derived from indigenous legitimacy in arat, is resisted by women. Women are now constructing their own truth claims, and are questioning the status quo.

Abstract

This research attempts to examine the existence of frames from jeremiad tradition as part of American values in an American president’s inaugural address. The function and context of the frames are also investigated. These aims are achieved by applying Goffman’s Frame Analysis on the text of Reagan’s inaugural addresses. This inaugural addresses is chosen because Reagan’s presidency is regarded to set the tone for the following presidencies; his presidency faced crises which other presidents following him have also faced; and he is viewed as one of the best orators among American presidents. The results show that Ronald Reagan’s inaugural addresses use the jeremiad frames which are categorized into three forms, namely, the lamentation of the present, the evocation of the past and the calling for renewal. By using these frames in combination with the context of the inaugural address, Reagan presents American perspective and hopes for their situation and future.

Abstract

No matter how the world changes, no matter what country and social system people are in, no one can deny women’s importance in history. But it does not mean that women are always treated well and fairly, and the women’s role in history has undergone numerous changes. In the past few decades women were considered to be a part of wealth and property. She used to be sold and purchased like any property or cattle. Till recently women were treated on different footing/pedestal, ‘depriving’ them of their rights but ‘reminding’ them of their duties. But with the changing times, the role of women in India has changed from child bearing to rearing to bread earner. Thus the new cultural milieu is making it inevitable for them to face the emerging reality in contemporary Indian society. This article is an attempt to throw light on the status of women in India from past to the present. It also tries to explain the position of women on the basis of socio-economic- political empowerment. Throughout the Indian history the double standard regarding the status of women is evident. In Literature and Religion of India, women are highly placed. But in the domestic, political and economic scenario, women occupy a lower status and are subjected to discrimination and exploitation. Women’s role in India has been changing over the years and women are now emerging from the past traditional set-up to a new era of freedom and rights. Role of women in modern India can be called as ‘phenomenal’. The fortunes of Indian women from the past to the present, is worth following. Indian women who were once considered to be the masters in the art of home making are now considered to be the ‘forces that shape the country’, which is the size of a continent.

Abstract

Abstract

Slips of the ears leads to speakers’ misperception and misunderstanding. It hints at communication failure between the speaker and the listener. Yet, linguists have not conducted full investigation on this matter. This research is designed to identify vowel sounds misperceived by Indonesian learners of English. Moreover, it examines the bearing of context and the causes of slips of the ears among those learners. A Questionaire and listening tests were used for data collection. The questionaire was employed to explore the respondents’ personal information. Analysis of the data commence with the identification of vowel sounds that are misperceived by the respondents. It guides the research to find the mean and percentage of listening test with and without context. The research provides strong evidence that context has a positive influence on learners’ comprehension of words. Accordingly, the research comes to the point that the causes of slips of the ear are interlingual and extralingual factors.
