This paper highlights specifically the inter-relationship amidst the Wali, ancient mosques and sacred tombs (makam) playing vital role in the process of Islamization in the Indonesian archipelago, and in Lombok in particular. The process of converting local religion to Islam involves Wali - a venerated religious figure coming from outside Lombok- and the tangible legacies that he left in the forms of keramat creating new tradition of ziarah. The early stage of conversion was strongly marked by contextualizing Islam into local cultural symbol and cosmology. Embedded in this stage is the development of venerated attributes attached to keWalian, in the forms of: karamah, ngalap berkah, and wasilah. These spiritual attributes are pinpointed to highlight a dis¬tinctive cultural variance of Sasak Muslims in Lombok.

Indonesian National Library has preserved Indonesian manuscripts by collecting and digitizing manuscripts in some areas of Indonesia, such as Yogyakarta, East Sumatera, Cirebon, and Pulau Penyengat. However, a lot of work should be done compared with the number of manuscripts in Indonesia. Ironically, the same thing does not happen with national library. Disseminating is even worse. The library has provided online catalog for the manuscripts. However, the entry of online catalog is lesser than the printed ones, and the electronic file is always not there. This paper duscusses on; firstly, manuscripts in Indonesia; Secondly, the intended role of the national library in preserving and disseminating the manuscripts; thirdly, the problematic aspect of the collection itself and the state of the manuscripts and above all, the unfulfilled manuscripts offers for researching purpose; fourthly, possibility to collaborate to have a portal or virtual manuscripts on Southeast Asia in a regional setting.

Indonesian Chinese with no exception Chinese Muslim in Indonesia has stepped into a considerable freedom during the current Reformation era. As like as many other Chinese Indonesians who take a part in creating integration model without abandoning their ethnic identity, Chinese Muslim have also shown similar endeavor. However, within the context of post-Reformation democracy, it seems that Chinese Muslim solely fights against any other Indonesian Chinese group and other Muslim community in Indonesia at the same time. Study about Chinese Muslim in Indonesia after Reformation is briefly undertaken ranging from its political contexts, cultural, and economy alike. Some scholars who interest in its cultural realm have been dealt with the important role of Chinese in spreading Islam into Nusantara in 14th Century. Here, Admiral Cheng Ho was an influential figure to introduce Islam to local people in northern coastal area of Java Island. It sounds that it is unlike with many other scholars who convince that Islam came to Java in the hand of Gujarat traders. This paper tries to explore the existence of Chinese Muslim in Jakarta during the current Post Reformation era. To complete this paper, I try to combine data that taken from in-depth interview with literature review and personal observation on some people and signs of Chinese Muslim in Jakarta.

This is article derived from a thesis study in the Sociology Department of the University of Indonesia in 2008 exploring socio-economic, socio-political and socio-cultural contexts playing their roles in the formation of the political and religious fields along with their respective ‘habitus’ of the social agents in the Papua land. This paper discusses the history of the term “papua” itself based on a historical study conducted by Solewijn Gelpke (1993). Based on historical approach, the relationship between Muslims and Christians in Papua can be traced as a religious and cultural heritage. Also, by using a sociological conception elaborated by Bourdieu (1992: 9), we may view the Papua land as a social space encompassing all conceptions of the social world. Bourdieu’s social space conception considers the social reality as a topology (Harker, 1990).

This study examines the use of the Arabic alphabet in religious literature in Yogyakarta. This study uses a case study on three figure writers of religious texts that using the Arabic alphabet in southern part of Central Java (Yogyakarta), namely Asrori Ahmad (Magelang), Ali Maksum (Yogyakarta), and Ahmad Mujab Mahalli (Bantul). This study concluded that the writing of religious texts in Arabic alphabet in the southern Java area had been carried out by means of using Arabic Pegon, and only a few people who wrote in the Arabic language. The transmission of Arabic Pegon in Yogyakarta is allegedly from north coast of Java, especially from Lasem / East Java. The tradition of Arabic language teaching in the pesantrens still focuses mostly on the reading effort, communication, and understanding and it is not oriented to the writing skill. The presence of international journals initiated by the College of Islamic religious institutions and the effort of translation business into Arabic from certain institutions gives an opportunity to strengthen the use of the Arabic alphabet in Indonesia.

Syaykh Abdul Qadir al-Jilani is the founder of Tariqah Qadiriyyah. His teaching is highly respected by the leaders of many Islamic traditional boarding schools in Indonesia. They have accepted his teachings from his works entitled Futµh al-Gayb, al-Fat¥ al-Rabban³, al-Gunya li °alib³ °ar³q al-¦aqq, and Kit±b Sirr al-Asr±r wa Ma©h±r al-Anw±r. In several studies related to the development of Qur'anic studies, especially in the field of interpretation, implicit questions remain unanswered on current connectivity and the authority of science in the Qur'anic studies as well as the capability of a person in compiling commentary or interpretation of the Qur’an that has an effect on Islamic society in Indonesia. Interpretations of al Quran today seems to be affected by various sources leading to polemics. According to scholars in Nusantara, it can be understood that there is a connection with the network of scholars based in the Middle East making the thoughts unseparated from the cleric network. Therefore, to uncover a network of sciences and chain of transmission lines (sanad) in Qur'anic studies is very important, particualrly in understanding the intersection between Huffaz clerics and tarekats in the dissemination of teaching the Qur'an.The study highlights that there is continuity and correlation between Huffaz and tarekat scholars network in Nusantara. However, at this time, the development of interpretation studies in Nusantara seems to be increasingly departed and separated by the guards of Qur’an, tarekat and the Islam community.

Essentially, the application of Islamic law in Indonesia has a huge opportunity. Undeniably, there remain challenges, both from within (Muslims) and from outside (other than Muslims). The great and tremendous challenges come from Muslims themselves. Muslims do not want Islamic law in Indonesia upright. The reason is the government is also unwilling because of the existing legal system and dissimilarity of attitude, understanding, practice of Muslims and Islamic leaders of Al-Quran and Al-Hadith, especially in relation to politics. It is likely to continue in line with the dynamics of Muslims in the state and nation. Pros and cons of Muslims against the application of Islamic law, including the unwillingness of groups against Islamic approach to structural (power) and Islamic cultural (culture), will raise the difficult and impossible application of Islamic law in Indonesia. Therefore, for most Muslims, the teachings should be reinterpreted beyond the textual meaning and application in real life.
