Aqwal: Journal of Quranic and Hadith Studies is a peer-reviewed (double-blind), open-access journal published biannualiy (Juni and Desember) by Ilmu Al-Qur’an-Tafsir (IAT) and Hadith (ILHA)Program, Faculty Ushuluddin, Adab and Da’wah, K.H Abdurrahman Wahid State Islamic University Pekalongan since 2020. Aqwal invites students, scholars and researchers to contribute the result of their studies and researches. This Journal is aims to Quranic and Hadith studies which covers original research and literatur review with various focus of linguistic (semantic, semiotic, stilistic qiroaat, nadhom), philosophy (hermeneutic), local wisdom studies, environment, gender, and others. This journal, serving as a forum for the study of Quranic and Hadith in Asian and other parts of the world within its local and challenging global context, supports focused Hadith studies of particular theme and multidisciplinary studies. Al-Aqwal has become a medium of exchange of ideas and research findings from various traditions.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Recent global labour-market shifts have lifted women’s labour-force participation to 54.42 % in Indonesia, compelling Muslim mothers to juggle dual identities as household educators (al-Madrasat al-Ūlā) and paid professionals. This study investigates how urban Javanese Muslim mothers interpret and reconcile these roles, integrating Islamic pedagogy with work–family research. Methods: A phenomenological approach combined 30 semi-structured interviews in three cities with a systematic review of 65 peer-reviewed studies (2010-2024). Inductive thematic coding of transcripts was triangulated with the literature. Main Findings: Role conflict stems mainly from rigid schedules, scarce workplace childcare and entrenched patriarchal norms. Mothers mitigate stress through extended-family help—especially grandmothers—religious coping rituals (dhikr, ṣalāh, majlis ta‘līm) and care-focused micro time-management that privileges “quality spiritual parenting” over duration. The al-Madrasat al-Ūlā ideal persists but is re-imagined as collective moral stewardship shared across family networks. Contribution: The study proposes an “Islamic Coping Matrix” linking context-specific stressors, resources and adaptive behaviours, demonstrating how religious capital compensates for limited institutional support and enriching cross-cultural work–family theory. Conclusion: Harmonising professional and maternal duties is feasible when organisations provide flexible policies and when community institutions—mosques and neighbourhood childcare schemes—augment state provision. Faith-based, culturally attuned interventions can thus sustain Muslim mothers’ dual contributions to household resilience and national productivity.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Muslims in non-Islamic states continuously face lots of challenges regarding recognition and observance of the Muslim patients’ rights (MPRs). There is widespread misconception that Islamic law does not explicitly cover patients’ rights. Methodology: The study adopts doctrinal method of Islamic legal research exploring foundation of the MPRs from the Holy Qur’an. Qur’anic exegesis explores Tafseer of Al-Qurtubi and As-Sa’di which are based on Ayat al-Ahkam (legislative verses). Relevant secondary sources of information were explored at academia, google scholar, google search engine, research gate, sage-pub, semantic, Brill, and jostor. The main results: The study finds that the MPRs emanated from the relevant verses of the Holy Qur’an especially the Qur’an Chapter 24 verse 30-31 and Quran Chapter 33 verse 59. The MPRs include same-gender treatment, presence of mahram during medical treatment, privacy and coverage of ‘awrah, separate hospital wards for different genders etc. Though the MPRS are very sacrosanct; they are not absolute and relaxable under emergencies to save life in compliance with certain cautions. This research contribution: The existing literature focused on medical fatwas and thematic interpretations with dearth of Qura’nic interpretative literature of modern healthcare regarding MPRs. The study fills the gap by coming up with up a model of legal framework, mapping table of verses and policy recommendations for the contemporary Muslim societies. Conclusion: The study finds that the MPRs are inherently inalienable having emanated from Holy Qur’an. The study recommends pragmatic integration of Islamic etiquettes in hospital policies and medical principles for the recognition of the MPRs

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Education in Indonesia faces significant challenges, as reflected in its low global rankings in education quality. One of the primary factors contributing to this issue is the lack of student motivation, often driven by boredom and a lack of understanding of the material. This study aims to explore the relevance of a hadith from Prophet Muhammad (SAW) about the virtue of those who acquire and teach knowledge, and contextualize this hadith within modern Islamic education, especially in the face of digitalization. Methodology: This qualitative research employs a library research method, utilizing primary data from the books Syarh Ibnu Baththal and Al-Minhaj Syarh Shahih Muslim. Secondary data is gathered from relevant literature on Islamic education and technology. The data is analyzed using linguistic studies and hadith authentication (takhrij). Main Results: The study reveals that the hadith likening knowledge to beneficial rain highlights the importance of spreading knowledge. It categorizes people into three types based on how they receive knowledge: those who absorb and teach it, those who lack understanding, and those who reject it. In the digital age, the ability to receive and apply knowledge depends heavily on individual readiness and technology. Contributions: This research contributes by linking classical Islamic teachings with contemporary educational challenges, especially digitalization. It enriches the understanding of how Islamic education principles can be applied in the modern context, integrating technology with moral and academic development. Conclusions: The hadith about knowledge remains a timeless guide in Islamic education. Education today should focus on integrating knowledge, ethics, and technology to shape individuals who are not only intellectually competent but also morally grounded, prepared to face global challenges.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: This study examines the Acehnese poetic translation of the Qur’an by Tgk. Mahjiddin Jusuf as a form of vernacularization that integrates linguistic, cultural, and religious elements. Rather than merely conveying the literal meaning of the Qur’anic text, Jusuf’s Al-Qur’an Al-Karim dan Terjemahan Bebas Bersajak dalam Bahasa Aceh functions as a cultural interpretation rooted in local norms and values. Methods: Utilizing a qualitative method with thematic analysis, the research analyzes purposively selected verses that contain elements of Acehnese culture, including politeness strategies, customary practices, and indigenous vocabulary. Main Results: Findings reveal that the translation embodies Acehnese identity through distinct vocabulary choices, such as boh ara (figs) and sineuk pade (wheat), and the integration of communal customs like peumulia jamee (honoring guests) and khanduri (traditional feasts). These linguistic and cultural adaptations not only localize the Qur’anic message but also reflect the translator’s intent to make the sacred text contextually resonant and spiritually accessible to Acehnese readers. Contributions: By foregrounding a non-Arab perspective, this study contributes to the diversification of Qur’anic translation discourse and challenges the dominance of Arab-centric or Western interpretive frameworks. It emphasizes the importance of sociocultural translation, arguing that translating the Qur’an entails negotiating meaning within specific cultural matrices. Conclusions: Jusuf’s work exemplifies vernacularization as both a method of cultural tafsir and a medium of dakwah anchored in local tradition and religious understanding.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Heart is not merely a biological organ, but the spiritual, emotional, and moral center of human life. The increasing prevalence of mental health problems in contemporary society highlights the need for a Qur’an-based conceptual model that can complement medical and psychotherapeutic approaches. This research aims to develop a conceptual framework of the Qalb Management Model, emphasizing spiritual (faith, piety), emotional (patience, sincerity, gratitude), and cognitive (reflection, contemplation) dimensions as alternative strategies for mental health care. Methods: The study employs a qualitative-descriptive library research method, analyzing Qur’anic verses containing the term qalb along with classical exegesis, prophetic traditions, and Islamic psychology literature. Main findings: Mental health, from a Qur’anic perspective, can be achieved through stages of purification of the heart (tazkiyat al-nafs), control of desires, attainment of inner tranquility, and ultimately psychological well-being. Practical applications include structured practices of remembrance (dhikr), Qur’anic recitation (tilawah), and worship-based interventions as non-pharmacological therapies. Contribution: The formulation of the Qalb Management Model as an integrative and applicable approach within Islamic psychology. Conclusion: qalb management can serve as a complementary model for modern mental health treatment. However, this study remains conceptual in nature and requires further empirical research to validate its effectiveness.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: This article examines the epistemological shift in the tradition of Qur’anic exegesis within Indonesian pesantren in the 21st century, marked by the transition from the use of Pegon script—a localized adaptation of the Arabic script—toward the production of tafsir texts in formal Arabic (fushah). Historically, Pegon functioned not only as a tool for religious instruction but also as a cultural symbol of epistemic autonomy. However, growing engagement with global Islamic scholarly networks has prompted pesantren scholars to reconfigure their knowledge production practices. Methods: This study aims to investigate the symbolic and epistemic dimensions of this transformation in order to understand the evolving position of pesantren within the transnational landscape of Islamic knowledge. Utilizing Norman Fairclough’s model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the research analyzes four contemporary tafsir texts composed within the pesantren tradition: Safīnah Kallā Saya’lamūn, Hidayatul Qur’an, Firdaus al-Na’im, and Risālah al-Mūjizah. Main Findings: the use of formal Arabic serves not only as a means of communication but also as an epistemic strategy to reaffirm continuity with classical Islamic scholarship while achieving legitimacy within modern academic contexts. These tafsir texts adopt conservative exegetical methods yet are presented in formats aligned with global academic standards. Contribution: this study lies in its demonstration of how contemporary pesantren tafsir embodies an ongoing negotiation between local identity, traditional authority, and the demands of transnational Islamic scholarly discourse. Conclusion: This transformation highlights the pesantren’s active role in reshaping Islamic epistemology in the global era.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Popular culture has become a major arena for identity construction and value negotiation among youth worldwide. In Indonesia, the global rise of Korean Pop (K-Pop) has sparked tension with religious values, particularly as some Muslim preachers on social media reject K-Pop by citing specific hadith. This study investigates how hadith are represented in online preaching discourses against K-Pop and explores their role in shaping Muslim youth identity within the digital public sphere. Methods: A qualitative approach was employed using Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis. Data were collected from Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok content where hadith were invoked to criticize K-Pop. To deepen interpretation, the analysis combined Abou El-Fadl’s hermeneutics of moral reading with a socio-historical contextual approach, enabling the distinction between literal and contextual uses of hadith in digital da‘wah narratives. Main Findings: The findings demonstrate that hadith such as man tasyabbaha biqawmin fahuwa minhum and al-mar’ ma‘a man ahabba are often interpreted literally to portray K-Pop admiration as a threat to Islamic faith. However, moderate preachers adopt contextual readings that integrate ethical and historical considerations, offering more inclusive approaches to engaging youth. Contribution: This article contributes by filling a gap in existing literature that rarely foregrounds hadith as the core analytical object in the study of religion and popular culture. It provides a critical framework for understanding how sacred texts function in digital identity negotiation. Conclusion: The study concludes that contextual and ethically grounded interpretations of hadith are essential for developing communicative, relevant, and non-authoritarian da‘wah strategies, empowering Muslim youth to engage critically with global cultural flows while retaining strong religious identity.
