Abstract

This article aims to elucidate the role of the literary work "Roman Medan" in depicting the socio-historical landscape of the Indonesian Revolution in East Sumatra. Employing a historical methodology and a social history approach, this research leverages various written sources, including "Roman Medan" stories published during the Indonesian Revolution era, newspapers, and supplementary literature. Despite the pervasive turmoil during the Revolution, authors and prominent figures did not remain silent; they endeavored to navigate through armed conflicts and diplomatic channels. In the context of East Sumatra, these efforts culminated in the creation of "Roman Medan." Unfortunately, these literary works have received limited attention, even though "Roman Medan" constitutes an authentic cultural product of the local community, offering profound insights into the lives of the people. The findings underscore that the conditions prevailing during the Revolution provided literary inspiration for authors. Through "Roman Medan" they conveyed the spirit of nationalism and offered a glimpse into the daily lives of individuals during this transformative period. Consequently, "Roman Medan" serves as a valuable resource for understanding the social realities of the Indonesian Revolution in East Sumatra.

Abstract

This study explores the 20th-century entry of Indian-Muslim ethnic groups into Barus, Central Tapanuli, aiming to understand the historical context. It focuses on three key aspects: 1) the migration factors driving Indian-Muslims to Barus, encompassing both push and pull factors; 2) the responses of the Barus residents towards Indian-Muslim newcomers; and 3) the professions pursued by the Indian-Muslim community in Barus. Employing qualitative and library-based research methods, data was collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, subsequently verified and analyzed. The findings highlight the influence of various push factors, primarily the unfavorable social and economic conditions in their hometowns, and the pull factors include economic opportunities and the religious significance of the Barus region. The indigenous people of Barus generally welcome Indian-Muslim newcomers, fostering integration through social and economic interactions, as well as cross-cultural marriages and the granting of Batak clan names to Indian-Muslim ethnic groups. Notably, Indian-Muslims predominantly engage in professions akin to the local Barus population, such as agriculture, fishing, trading, and various services.

Abstract

This research examines the "Dynamics of the Marpangir Tradition within the North Padang Lawas Regency Community" with a primary focus on its historical emergence and evolving dynamics during the period from 1990 to 2000. Employing qualitative methods, including an anthropological approach and ethnographic data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation, this study draws from seven informants representing diverse backgrounds, such as community leaders, tradition practitioners, and local authorities. The findings highlight the Marpangir Tradition as a customary practice in North Padang Lawas Regency, serving as a purification ritual preceding Ramadan fasting. Despite its long-standing presence in local culture, significant transformations have occurred between 1990 and 2000, including the adoption of practical alternatives like shampoo and soap due to challenges in sourcing traditional ingredients. Furthermore, a shift in community engagement is observed, with more young individuals utilizing the tradition for social interactions and even dating, offering valuable insights into the adaptability of cultural traditions in response to changing societal values.
