Abstract

Lip cream cosmetics are widely used by the public, but they potentially contain heavy metals such as lead (Pb), which are toxic. This study aims to determine the presence and levels of lead in lip cream cosmetics sold at Batu Aji Market, Batam City. This study was a laboratory experiment using a qualitative test method using Potassium Iodide (KI) solution and a quantitative test using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Five lip cream samples without BPOM notification numbers were selected through purposive sampling. The test results showed that all samples were negative for lead, indicated by the absence of a yellowish-white precipitate and the absence of a typical lead absorption peak at a wavelength of 426 nm. Thus, all samples met the maximum limit for lead heavy metal contamination set by BPOM (≤20 mg/kg). Routine monitoring of heavy metal content in cosmetics remains necessary to ensure product safety on the market

Abstract

Self-medication is the act of using medicine without diagnosis and supervision from healthcare professionals, which is commonly practiced by the public to address minor complaints such as coughs and colds. Although it is practical, improper self-medication has the potential to cause various health risks. This study aims to identify differences in levels of satisfaction and perceptions of the effectiveness of using traditional and modern medicines in self-medicating coughs and colds in the community. This study employs a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. Data collection was carried out through an online questionnaire using Google Forms among respondents who had previously self-medicated for coughs and colds. The research instruments included demographic data as well as satisfaction assessments based on a Likert scale regarding the effectiveness, safety, and convenience of medication use. The data were analyzed descriptively and comparatively to observe differences in satisfaction levels between users of traditional and modern medicines

Abstract

Weak drug regulatory supervision in developing countries allows the public to easily obtain prescription-only medicines without adequate control, including through the misuse of medical prescriptions. This situation may lead to irrational drug use and increase the risk of adverse drug reactions and other health problems. This study aims to assess the level of pharmacy compliance with regulations governing prescription-only medicines, particularly the requirement for a valid physician’s prescription. In addition, this study discusses the distinction between prescription-only medicines and non-prescription drugs. Non-prescription or over-the-counter medicines can be purchased freely in pharmacies and drugstores; however, their use must comply with label instructions and pharmacists’ guidance. Compliance with regulations and the professional role of pharmacists are essential to ensure safe, rational, and responsible drug use in the community.

Abstract

Vitamin D is a key nutrient that plays an essential role in maintaining bone integrity through the regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism. Prolonged vitamin D deficiency leads to reduced bone mineral density and an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures, particularly among older adults. This article presents a literature review of three scientific journals that examine the relationship between vitamin D supplementation, bone mineral density, and fracture prevention. The synthesized literature indicates that a supplementation dose of 800–1000 IU/day—especially when combined with calcium—provides significant protective effects on bone health. Higher doses do not offer additional meaningful benefits and may increase the risk of hypercalcemia. Thus, vitamin D serves as a strategic preventive intervention that can be considered for maintaining long-term bone health

Abstract

The increasing resistance of bacteria to conventional antibiotics has created a need for jatural antibacterial agents. This study aimed to review the role of flavonoids in medicinal plant leaf extract on antibacterial activity. A systematic literature review was conducted using scientific journals published between 2020 and 2025 Inclusion criteria focused on research articles reporting in vitro baterical activity of leaf extracts containing  flavonoids. A total of 20 articels were selected and analyzed based on plant species, extract type, test bacteria, extraction metod, and antibacterial activity results. The analysis showed that leaf extract containing flavonoids generally exhibit antibacterial effects agains both Gram Positive and Gram negative bacteria. Effectiveness varies depending on plant species, flavonoid profile, extract concentration,  extract  method, and solvent polarity. Most extract Gram negative bacteria are more resistant because  of their protective outer membrane.  Flavonoids activity through multiple mechan,  including disrupting bacterial cell membranes,  inhibiting protein and nucleic acid synthesis, interfering with peptidoglycan formation, and inhibiting essential enzymes such as DNA gyrase, Flavonoid structural characteristics, such as the number and position of hydroxyl groups, influence their antibacterial potential. Overall, flavonoid rich leaf extracts have significant potential as natural antibacterial agents, offering multitarget mechanisms that can contribute to bacterial infection control strategies and address antibiotic resistance
