Abstract

The objective of this study is to enhance students’ understanding of solving linear equation with one variable through teaching using balancing model. To achieve this research objective, design-based research approach was chosen. The target population of the study was grade five students and their mathematics teacher. From this population, the participants of the study were grade five section A students and their respective mathematics teacher who were selected using simple random sampling and comprehensive sampling techniques, respectively. The data were collected through observation, teacher made tests and interview. The test results were analyzed using paired samples t-test and percentage, and the interview and classroom observation data were analyzed through thematic description. Findings showed that most students performed better in the post-test as compared to the pre-test, and most students came to use more flexible strategies to solve linear equation after a series of learning attempts made using balancing model. Moreover, the students and their mathematics teacher showed positive attitude towards learning linear equation through balancing model. On the basis of these findings, the researchers have forwarded relevant recommendations in the paper.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the representation of students' mathematical concepts in solving algebraic problems based on mathematical ability. This study is exploratory descriptive qualitative with four junior high school students as subjects. Data were collected using a task-based interview and analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The mathematical ability is categorized into high and low.  The results show that differences in mathematical ability has no real effect on the representation of mathematical concepts of students in algebraic problem solving. Proved by all subjects (low and high mathematical abilities) are able to solve algebraic problems using verbal, symbolic, imagistic, and notational formal representations. However, there is a difference on the model of mathematical representation used. Students with high ability prefer to use conceptual representations using conventional standard notations, while those with low mathematical ability tend to use pictorial representations using non-standard illustrations.

Abstract

This research is a research development that aims to find out the development of peer learning assisted by peer tutors that can improve students' mathematical problem solving abilities that are valid, practical and effective. This research procedure uses the development of research by Borg Gall. This development stage starts from the preliminary study, the preparation of learning development, validation, initial field trials, and field trials. The subjects of the study were Grade VII students of Al-Huda Jatiagung South Lampung Middle School in the odd semester of the 2019/2020 academic year. Data collection through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and tests of mathematical problem solving abilities. The results showed that the syntax or stages of discovery learning assisted by peer tutors on the set material met valid and practical criteria. Furthermore, the average N-Gain score of students' mathematical problem-solving abilities after using peer tutored assisted discovery learning is more than the average N-Gain score of mathematical problem-solving abilities of students who take conventional learning. It was concluded that the ability to solve mathematical problem solving with peer tutor-assisted discovery learning was more effective than conventional mathematical problem solving skills with conventional learning.

Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the question, "What is the description of the mathematical critical thinking ability of middle school students in Tidore city based on gender and background?". This question is essential to answer because it is motivated by the mathematical performance of students in Tidore is low nationally and is reinforced by the results of the 2015 and 2018 PISA and OECD surveys. Gender is used as a distinguishing factor because this factor is still culturally rooted in this area and affects the role of society in life socially. Tidore comprises three significant communities, namely coastal, urban, and mountainous communities, each of which has a unique pattern of social life. Therefore, researchers also use "background" as a distinguishing factor. Data collection was carried out in three schools representing the three communities using a questionnaire, math problems (arithmetic, geometry, algebra), and semi-structured interviews on two subjects (male and female) in each location. The results of the analysis show, based on gender and background the ability of students to think critically mathematically are categorized as sufficient (close to less) with a mathematical critical thinking (MCT) achievement ratio of  0.27. Male subjects had an achievement ratio of 0.3 (sufficient) higher than female subjects of  0.24 (insufficient). Based on the background subjects from urban areas had the highest MCT achievement ratio of 0.49 (sufficient) while the subject achievement ratio of the coast and mountains were 0.17 (insufficient) and 0.15 (insufficient), respectively.

Abstract

The aim of this study is describing students’ conception about mathematics as sensible based on personality types. This study is a descriptive study with qualitative approach. Subjects of this study are four female vocational students with guardian type, artisan type, rational type, and idealis type with equivalent mathematics ability and feminine gender orientation. The selection of subjects was held through personality test, mathematics ability test, and gender orientation questionnaire. The data were collected by giving problem solving task and task-based interview.The result showed that there are some differences on students’ conception about mathematics as sensible based on personality type. Students with guardian type, Artisan type, and rational type planed a problem solving strategy based on their previous experience, while student with Idealis type planed a problem solving strategy based on the mathematics concept related to the problem. Students with Guardian type and Rational type planed alternative strategy in solving problem to get better solution. Another difference is in explaining the reason of using strategy. Student with Rational type didn’t explain the reason of using the problem solving strategy

Abstract

This research and development aims to develop LKPD based on open-ended and test its effectiveness on critical thinking skills in mathematics. This development phase begins with research and information gathering, planning, initial product form development, initial field testing, major product revisions, and main field testing. The subjects of this study were the eighth grade students of Al-Huda Jati Agung Junior High School in the academic year 2019/2020. The effectiveness test was conducted to determine the effectiveness of LKPD on the ability to think critically mathematically. The LKPD based on the open-ended developed was suitable for use in the excellent category based on the results of the validation of two expert validators. Preliminary field trial results indicate that LKPD is included in the good category. Field test results show that the average increase in students 'critical thinking skills in mathematics using LKPD on an open-ended basis is higher than the increase in average students' critical thinking skills in mathematics that do not use LKPD based on open-ended, so it can be concluded that LKPD based on open-ended effective for improving students' critical thinking math skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the critical thinking process of eighth grade junior high school students in solving mathematical problems in terms of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. This type of research is a descriptive exploratory study with a qualitative approach. The subjects in this study were one female student with a visual learning style, one female student with an auditory learning style, and one student with a kinesthetic learning style. All three of these subjects have intermediate and equivalent mathematical abilities. Data collection is done by giving assignments and interviews conducted twice.The results obtained in this study are (1) The critical thinking process of eighth grade junior high school students with visual learning styles in solving mathematical problems, namely at the stage of understanding the problem, the subject does interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation. (2) The critical thinking process of eighth grade junior high school students with auditory learning styles in solving mathematical problems, namely at the stage of understanding the problem, the subject doing interpretation, analysis, inference, and explanation. (3) The critical thinking process of eighth grade junior high school students with kinesthetic learning styles in solving mathematical problems, namely at the stage of understanding the problem, the subject doing interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation. At the stage of preparing a plan for completion the subject conducts analysis, evaluation, inference, and explanation.

Abstract

The aim of this development research is to develop “Kebun Pythagoras” media which can be used in learning to help student to prove the truth of the Pythagorean Theorem. The development model used is the Plomp development model (2010). The development of “Kebun Pythagoras” media goes through three steps: initial research, development step, and assessment step. The results of evaluation data are suggestuins and research trial subjects’ assessments used as an input for developing the media. The results of data analysis obtained an overall average value of criteria 3.6 of 4.0 scale included valid category. The practicality result of media utilization with an overall average value of criteria 3.5 of 4.0 scale included practical category.

Abstract

This study aims to develop Teaching Materials in the form of Ethnomatematics student worksheets using the Ume Kbubu (traditional house in Timor-Indonesia) context for undergraduate students. It is a kind of research and development using the formative Tessmer Evaluation Model. It consisted of two stages of development, namely the preliminary analysis stage and the formative evaluation stage. The subjects of the current study were students who programed Ethnomatemics, academic year 2019/2020, at Mathematics Education Study Program, Universitas Timor- Indonesia. Data collection techniques applied were tests of learning outcomes, observation, and interviews. Experts have validated the development of product design (prototypes) of student worksheets, using the Ume Kbubu context. The results of the current research have shown that students worksheet meets the criteria of practicality and effectiveness. Thus, Ethnomatematics Teaching Material using the context of Ume Kbubu is stated as useable in the process of lecturing on Ethnomathematics courses, especially for undergraduate mathematics education study programs in Universitas Timor- Indonesia.

Abstract

Asynchronous motors have been used extensively in the industry since the first discovery. Although the general working principles do not change, they can be made geometrically in the form of cylinders, spheres, cones and even discs. One of these geometries is known as axial flux machine topology which has a disc structure. Axial flux machines are remarkable in terms of their high efficiency, high power density and advantage in terms of compact structures. In this study, extended literature search of axial flux induction motor is given. In addition to the literature, axial induction motor design interface has been created by using MATLAB GUI software. This interface can communicate with ANSYS Maxwell. Thus, the dimensioning values of the machine calculated via the interface can be drawn automatically in Ansys Maxwell and it can perform numerical analysis. The obtained torque, current and efficiency data were evaluated.
