Abstract

Student competence in conducting final research projects and supervisor competence in mentoring research are critical aspects that need enhancement. This study aimed to analyze the competence of supervisors and students in the methodology of mathematics education research. The research was part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of mathematics education research outcomes at the higher education level. The research methodology employs descriptive analysis, with respondents comprising supervisors and students engaged in thesis research within mathematics education programs. The findings revealed that supervisors' competence in research methodology remains suboptimal. The highest competence areas include understanding instrument validity and reliability, research hypothesis formulation, and collaborative research skills, with an average achievement rate of 66.7%. Similarly, students' understanding and application of research methodology are also insufficient, with the highest competence observed in differentiating between quantitative and qualitative research at 83.25%. Factors influencing research methodology competence for both supervisors and students were identified. These include a basic understanding of research (34.4%) and, notably, the lowest level of competence in sampling techniques (25.8%). The results highlight the need for further studies aimed at enhancing and refining research methodology competencies in mathematics education.

Abstract

This study aims to describe students' creative thinking abilities in solving HOTS geometry problems as viewed from Van Hiele's thinking levels. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a method of analyzing the creative thinking process based on Van Hiele's thinking levels, which include: level 0 (visualization), level 1 (analysis), level 2 (informal deduction), level 3 (deduction), and level 4 (rigor). The research subjects consisted of three students: one at level 0, one at level 1, and one at level 2. The research subjects were selected based on the results of the VHGT test. Data collection techniques were conducted through the VHGT test, HOTS questions, and unstructured interviews, then analyzed using data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion/verification. The results of the study indicate that students' creative thinking levels are related to Van Hiele's thinking levels. The higher the Van Hiele thinking level of the students, the more complex and creative the problem-solving strategies used.

Abstract

Computational thinking is the ability to think about solving problems the way a computer works. This ability is very important in the 21st century, so it needs a teacher's attention when teaching mathematics. This study aims to explore and analyze the impact of discovery learning on students' mathematical computational thinking abilities and self-confidence. The research was carried out at a private high school in Bogor for the 2023/2024 academic year. This research uses a quasi-experimental method with a randomized posttest-only control group design. The research sample consisted of 28 students using the discovery learning model and 26 students using the conventional model. Data collection instruments are tests and questionnaires that have been tested for validity and reliability. The research results show that the average mathematical computational thinking ability taught using the discovery learning model is higher than the conventional model class, with a large influence in the medium category (= 0.221). The average self-confidence of experimental class students is higher than that of the control class with large being included in the medium category (= 0.186). The discovery learning model influences students' mathematical computational thinking abilities and self-confidence in the high category (= 0.292).

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the types of mathematical errors made by students in solving Banten culture-based mathematical literacy problems on algebra material using Newman Error Analysis (NEA), and to provide appropriate Scaffolding to help correct these errors. This study was motivated by the problem of students' low ability to solve contextual mathematical literacy problems. The approach used was qualitative with a case study method. The subjects of the study were 36 students of grade VIII of SMP Al-Wildan Islamic School 7 Serang. Data were collected through mathematical literacy tests and in-depth interviews with students who made errors, where interviews were conducted with two subjects for each type of error using the constant comparison method. The results showed that transformation errors and errors in writing the final answer were the most dominant types of errors. Scaffolding provided in stages through keyword identification, mathematical model preparation, and answer checking proved effective in helping students. This study emphasizes the importance of teachers' ability to analyze student errors appropriately and provide adaptive Scaffolding so that mathematical literacy learning objectives are achieved optimally.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the effect of implementing the scientific method on students’ conceptual understanding and learning independence in mathematics. This study employs a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. Using purposive sampling, the sample consisted of 78 students from Grade XI of SMK Negeri 2 Pandeglang majoring in Laboratory Management Analysis (APL), with 36 students in the experimental class and 32 students in the control class. The instruments used in this study were written tests and questionnaires. Data analysis techniques included ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) and MANOVA (Multivariate Analysis of Variance). The results showed that students who were taught using the scientific method had significantly higher conceptual understanding and learning independence (p < 0.05), with a very large effect size (d ≥ 2.00), compared to students who were taught using conventional methods.
