Abstract

Social media was started with the intent to create a forum to allow people from different social and cultural backgrounds to interact regardless of location and time, whereas youths are predominantly its users. They cannot imagine life without the Internet as they kept seeking for ways to connect virtually to everyone in the world. Social media have both positive and negative impacts on the youths, in which negative impacts on the moral development supersedes the positive impacts. Therefore, it becomes such a stumbling block to their moral development. It is on this ground that the study employed qualitative method through a critical analysis of Islamic scriptures and scholarly perspectives of both print and e-materials, by examining the concepts of youth, social media and its classification, as well as elaborate position and functions of youth in Islam. Moreover, the concept of morality in Islam is also expounded, ultimately, this research contributes in providing insights into how social media impact the moral development of Muslim youth as well as how their morality can be strengthened and preserved while using social media. It is concluded that, both government and the public have important roles to play in creating awareness on the dangers of social media and the ways the youth can have a good use of it as far as their moral development and being productive members of the society is concern.

Abstract

Religious tolerance is a crucial element in creating harmony within multicultural societies. This article analyzes the concept of religious tolerance through a literature review, covering its definition, foundations, objectives, benefits, challenges, and strategies for strengthening it. Tolerance is defined as an attitude of respecting differences without imposing personal beliefs, rooted in moral religious values and human rights principles. Its objectives include maintaining social stability, diversity, and social cohesion, with benefits such as strengthened social relationships and the protection of human rights. However, challenges like radicalism, social polarization, and a lack of pluralism understanding remain obstacles. To address these, strategies such as multicultural education, interfaith dialogue, media involvement, and regulations protecting religious freedom are necessary. Using a qualitative approach with thematic analysis of scientific literature, this article provides a comprehensive insight into the importance of religious tolerance in maintaining social harmony while offering practical solutions to strengthen tolerance in diverse societies.

Abstract

This paper examines the controversial issue of state-enforced hijab within Islamic governance. The debate is pivotal to the discourse on women’s rights within Islamic societies and is intertwined with broader socio-political dynamics such as governance, human rights, and individual freedom. Despite extensive literature on various dimensions of hijab, there remains a gap in analyses that bridge classical Islamic political thought with contemporary socio-political realities. Employing a qualitative textual analysis of classical treatises and modern scholarly debates, this study assesses whether the state holds a legitimate role in mandating hijab. It explores historical enforcement mechanisms and contrasts them with ideological arguments surrounding hijab enforcement in the modern era. The findings reveal that while classical Islamic scholars emphasized the state’s role in upholding public morality, explicit discussions on hijab enforcement are largely absent. Meanwhile, contemporary debates reveal a spectrum ranging from advocacy for state-enforced hijab to moderate and liberal emphases on personal choice and opposition to coercion. The paper proposes a balanced maqasid-based approach, recommending that Islamic governance prioritize inculcating a culture of modesty through education and public engagement over deploying extensive and coercive legal measures.

Abstract

The Islamic finance industry has significantly established itself in the global financial landscape since the latter half of the 20th century. Its constant substantial growth has surprised even those, not assured of its success earlier. In the economic recession of 2008, Islamic finance was termed as a safe, ethical, and vibrant alternative to the conventional financial system. In 2023, the global financial landscape faced several tough challenges characterized by geopolitical tensions, inflation and excessive debt. Despite these high challenges, the Islamic Financial Service Industry has continuously demonstrated remarkable growth. Approximately, 3.38trillion dollars of the United States is estimated to be engaged in this experiment. It has garnered attention from top global financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and many other reputed financial institutions and it has equally received warm attention from global academic centers like Harvard University, Rice University, London School of Economics, and many other top universities of the world. It is currently operational in more than 75 countries via 550 Islamic financial institutions. Emerging concepts in conventional economics, such as green funds and ethical financing, constitute fundamental elements inherent in the Islamic financial system, which has consequently expanded the scope of the Islamic financial industry. Therefore, the present study explores the scope and viability of Islamic finance in the context of globalization, emphasizing equity financing as a preferable alternative to debt financing. It takes into account, how Islamic financing can help developed and developing countries to build a new world order that would be based on tranquility, cooperation, mutual help, sharing, and caring by relying more on equity financing than on debt financing. The present study discusses the repercussions of interest based debt on global economy and the need of Islamic finance to bloom economies of developed and developing countries at global level by avoiding channels of exploitative practices like interest, debt-trap, in-equality of wealth, etc. which eventually leads  nations into poverty, debt, abject hunger, and un-employment. The study also examines why the debt relief packages provided to under-developing countries by developed nations have not successfully helped to address the issues of debt trap and in equality of wealth. Furthermore, the study reviews, whether Islamic finance exclusively serves the interests of Muslims only or benefits the whole humanity without any discrimination of caste creed, color, region and religion.

Abstract

Superstition, as an unscientific and irrational belief, is a long and common practice across the globe and almost in every aspect of human endeavor be it economic, moral, social, psychological and religious. Will, is one of the means of acquiring wealth and taking over the ownership of a portion of an estate after the demise of the real owner. However there are some superstitions that are related to it and are so believed and practiced by people around the world in general and Yoruba people of Nigeria in particular. Therefore, this paper aims at uncovering the degree of involvement of the Yoruba Muslims of southwest Nigeria in the superstitious practices related to will. The paper also discusses the Islamic perspective of the practices. Descriptive and analytical research methods were used in this work. The research findings reveal that ignorance of some Yoruba Muslims of the Islamic systems of Will and Inheritance and their strict adherence to the Yoruba culture are the salient factors influencing them to the involvement in the superstitious practices related to Will. The paper, therefore, concludes by encouraging creation and promotion of more awareness on the significance and relevance of Islamic system of Will not only to the individual Muslim but also to the entire Yoruba people.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of adab al-kalam (politeness of speech) in the Tafsir of Surah Al-Hujurat, especially verses 2, 6, 9, 10, 11, and 12, which describe the interaction of the Companions with the Prophet Muhammad. This surah provides important guidelines on communication manners and ethics, which are very relevant in the social life of Muslims. The asbabun nuzul of this surah includes several important stories, such as the disobedience of some companions in speaking loudly in front of the Prophet (verse 2), as well as the act of quickly believing in information without verification (verse 6), responding to conflicts between tribes (verses 9 and 10), focusing on insulting fellow Muslims (verse 11), and emphasizing the prohibition of prejudice (verse 12). The research uses thematic interpretation method (tafsir maudhui) with a qualitative approach, referring to classical and contemporary interpretation sources, as well as relevant scientific articles. The results show that the concept of communication politeness in the Qur'an includes respect for the authority of the Prophet Muhammad, the selection of appropriate language, awareness of social position, and control of emotions. In addition to being a reflection of human relations, this politeness is also a form of respect for the Prophet Muhammad as a messenger of Allah. This research contributes to the understanding of communication ethics in Islam based on the interpretation of Al-Hujurat, which can be applied in the context of modern social life.

Abstract

This article explores the complex processes of social and political identity formation among Muslim minority communities in Laos, a country marked by its ethnocultural diversity and governed under a single-party socialist regime. These communities—including descendants of South Asian and Southwest Chinese immigrants, Cham-Khmer Muslims from Cambodia, as well as indigenous converts from groups such as the Lao Loum, Khmu, and Hmong present a compelling case for understanding minority integration in a politically and religiously restrictive environment. Drawing on more than six years of fieldwork, the author utilizes qualitative data collected through interviews, focus group discussions, and site surveys to examine the lived experiences, challenges, and evolving identities of these under-researched populations. The study was conducted under significant constraints due to limited access to official demographic data, shaped by national security policies and restrictions on the dissemination of religious information. Furthermore, the data collection period overlapped with the COVID-19 pandemic, adding considerable obstacles to field research.  The article pursues two primary objectives: (1) to investigate the construction of social identity among Muslim minorities in Laos, and (2) to analyze how their political identities are shaped in relation to the Lao state. It highlights the interplay between internal factors (such as ethnicity, religious practices, political regime, and demographic policies) and external influences (including transnational Islamic discourse, media exposure, and socio-economic conditions) in shaping identity formation. The diversity of ethnic origins is shown to produce varied expressions of Islam, while the concept of the Ummah fosters a shared sense of belonging across different jurisprudential traditions. This work offers a foundational contribution to the limited body of knowledge on Muslim minorities in Laos and aims to support future academic inquiry into the religious, political, and social dynamics of ethnic and religious minorities in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

The Islamic-Based Model of Research (taḥqīq) Methodology, is a research approach that integrates naql (the Quran and Sunnah) with a’ql (reasoning). How does this Islamic model operate, and how can it be applied to contemporary research? This scholarly article aims to address these questions through two key objectives. First, it seeks to identify the two fundamental components of taḥqīq: the subject (the researcher or moḥaqīq) and the object (the research topic). Second, it introduces the model, which is structured around four dialectical interactions between the subject and object, collectively referred to as the ‘trinity of taḥqīq’. By critically examining and refining existing Western-oriented research paradigms, this study aspires to advance and enrich their epistemological foundations.

Abstract

This paper examines the relationship between ʿaql (human reason) and naql (divine revelation) in Islamic intellectual history. After defining these terms, it studies classical perspectives from early rationalists to Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī (874–936 CE) and Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī (853–944 CE) theologians on whether apparent conflicts between reason and scripture can arise. Drawing on Qur’anic tafsīr and theological works of scholars like al‑Ghazzālī (1058–1111) and Ibn Taymiyyah (1263–1328), the study shows how genuine contradiction is considered impossible (since both reason and revelation originate from One Single God — Allāh ﷻ) but how unusual instances like mu‘jizāt (miracles) and ghāʾib (the unseen) may challenge habitual expectations. Case studies, like the ḥadīth about the fly, the Qur’ān (13:12-13) on lightning and thunder, and Day of Judgment signs like the westward sunrise, illustrate how premodern and contemporary scholars distinguish contrary to reason (logically impossible) from contrary to habit (empirically rare). A comparison between scientific reasoning and daily experiences with scriptural texts is made to show that true reconciliation involves contextual interpretation, recognition of the limits of reason, and assent to divine omnipotence. The paper concludes that in mainstream Sunni thought, reason and revelation are ultimately harmonious: any apparent conflict must be addressed by careful analysis, metaphorical readings, or admission that human knowledge is incomplete.

Abstract

This paper investigates the legitimate authority of the Prophetic Sīrah (biography) as a source of legal and ethical deductions within Islamic jurisprudence. While classical scholarship unanimously considers the Sīrah an essential component of the Sunnah (Prophetic tradition), its independent capacity to serve as a foundational basis for deriving rulings has been a subject of nuanced analysis. By distinguishing Sīrah from Sunnah, this study critically examines the extent to which the Sīrah can function as a source of normative guidance. Employing a qualitative methodology grounded in library research, the paper utilizes descriptive, analytical, and comparative approaches to scrutinize classical and contemporary scholarship. The findings demonstrate that Prophetic Sīrah, beyond its narrative value, possesses significant legislative weight in contextualizing and applying Islamic principles to the evolving realities of Muslim life. In the context of modern complexities, the Sīrah not only reinforces Muslim identity but also provides actionable frameworks for ethical and legal reasoning. This research contributes to the broader discourse on Islamic legal theory by reaffirming the integrative role of Sīrah alongside the Sunnah in shaping jurisprudential thought and moral conduct.
