Abstract

The aim of comedy as a work of drama is to entertanin and ciritcize by making fun of the human characters and flaws or helpless situation. Comedy also makes fun of people from the county side who imitate the ways the Parisians dress and talk in exaggerated way. The works of the well-known comedy writers like Moli re (1622-1673), Marivaux (1688-1763) and Beaumarchais (1732-1799) deal with universal characters and problems, stereotypical human flaws, for example, stinginess, hypocrisy, arrogance, and snobbism.

Abstract

This research deals with the relation between Indonesia dan the United States of America (US) in the past. Recently the role of the US becomes stronger and dominant in the international scene. The US also interferes into the foreign policy making of a country, like Indonesia. The single super powerm after the dismiss of the Uni-Sovyet following the end of the Cold War, imposed its will to Indonesia to take a part in a war against terrorism after the Tragedy 911. It seems that such a attitude is not something new happening in this era. The intervention already occurred in the past. The US got involved and interferred the Indonesian struggle for independence. On the one hand the conduct could be seen as a blessing in disguise because it forced Dutch to end its effort restoring a colonial rule. On the other, the US treated Indonesia not always friendly and sincerely. They pushed Indonesia to accept agreements with the Dutch to end the dispute.

Abstract

This paper demonstrates that jinja as the center of shaen functions to remind every worker of the existence of shaen in order to make her feel the power and authority of the sacred being near them, in time and space surrounding them to protect business and maintain security in work. Jinja, owned and founded by the corporation, becomes the symbolic representation of the sacred; worshipped by employees it becomes the site (ba) to conduct corporate ritual (matsuri). The existence of jinja in the Japanese corporation and in the space of production implies the belief of workers that the sacred is existent and immanent in the corporation. The belief that the sacred and the profane exist produces an order and social control amongst and over the workers and encourages productivity. That is, they constitute a symbolic expression of their belief based on, and the same time constructing, the Japanese work ethic.

Abstract

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol is one of Russian writers who played important role in the Golden Age of Russian literature in the XIX century. He created a new writing style called critical realism where reality is represented as bad and negative, with an assumption that people through such representation will attain a new awereness of reality. This paper aims at exploring the idea of concept of critical realism through the examination of the characters in Gogol's works in Dead Souls. An analysis of the characters in Dead Souls reveals an understanding of critical realism. Social critics in these works are presented in ironic humor that they do not appear too harsh. The conflict between the characters indicated by their humanization and desocialization which produce a condition where individuals oriented only to material concerns. There was a depersonalization process where a human being loses himself. There was also a description of how Russian values found in local wisdom (obchshina) that emphasizes communal life, familiarity of equality (obshestvo), simplicity and honesty (narodnicestvo) and non-religiousity (sveti lyudi) disappear, defeated by the increasing materialism.

Abstract

Synonymous verbs are often confusing because on the one hand verbal pairs have the same meanings but on the other they cannot replace one another in all contexts. This paper examines the contexts of synonymous verbal pairs in French. It shows that aspects that limit the synonymity of a set of words are verbal meanings, semantic characteristics of accompanying words, verbal valence, syntactyc structure, and the commoness of usage of the words. The observation shows that 1) the contexts of the synonymous pairs cannot replace one another although the meanings of both are the same, and 2) the difference in meanings is due to the fact that each word is polysemic.
