Abstract

Sexual revolution in France in the decade of the 1970s is characterized by social openness toward sex. There is a change in the pattern of spousal living, including same-sex relation. Homosexuals in France have the courage to declare their sexual orientation. Despite pros and cons within the French society, PACS or the solidarity civil pact, since 1999, allowed homosexual pairs to formalize their commitment outside marriage. French songs with homosexual themes began to appear in the decade of the 1960s. Since then, around 90 songs foreground homosexuality through various themes and perspectives. In the first reading, the lyrics only foreground the emergence of consciousness or confession of a homosexual. The theme of the orientation of homosexual behaviour can be found in most of the songs. Other themes are related to other perspectives. Further discussion shows that these songs are presented in terms of three negative perspectives: negative, positive and neutral. The negative perspective uses homosexuality as an object of joke, the second proposes defense for the homosexual community, and the neutral perspective is completely descriptive and generally portrays sexuality and sensuality among the homosexuals.

Abstract

Cultural studies is a study of culture, the paradigm of which is quite different from that of the conventional (i.e. modern) studies. If we accept this view, it means that the whole problem of cultural reality, epistemology, and methodology cannot be used to understand and investigate cultural studies and multiculturalism. The infeasibility of using conventional study of culture to apprehend cultural studies and multiculturalism is related with the principle of incommensurability between those two fields, so there are different worldviews and rules (language games) between the two. This difference is vividly showed in character and model of study that conceives culture as homogeneity, single identity, patterned values, fragmented. Cultural studies and multiculturalism conceive culture as plurality, complexity, constructed identity, dynamics, diversity, interaction, and something porous. In light of this worldview, cultural studies, multiculturalism, and globalism, according to my analysis, must be understood and studied from postmodern perspective or paradigm.

Abstract

show that Indonesian and Malaysian literatures grew and developed out of the same old tradition, namely Malay tradition. Indonesian and Malaysian languages are also rooted in the same language, namely, the Malay language. It only makes sense that there a number of similarities This paper discusses the nationalist ideas found in the poems of M. Yamin published in Indonesia Tumpah Darahku and a number of poems produced by 10 Malaysian poets. These Malaysians' poems are found in a poetry anthology titled Puisi-puisi Kebangsaan 1913-1957 (nationalist poems 1913-1957) compiled by Abdul Latif Abu Bakar and published in 1987. Based on a comparison of these two sets of poems, some similarities can be discerned, such as admiration of natural beauty, admiration of past heroes and glories, and appeal by the poets for national unity. These similarities are made possible by similar political and cultural situations prevailing in both Indonesia and Malaysia in certain period of time. The relation between Indonesia and Malaysia that is tied by a common language (Malay) and a sense of being in the same situation (colonial oppression) are other factors that allow a number of Indonesian and Malaysian poets to write poems of similar themes in similar styles.

Abstract

United States' foreign policy has been extremely influenced by some determinant factors both personal and institutional. However, by the end of World War II, an institution known as interest group, played important role relatively to the determination of United States' foreign policies, particularly those which were related to Middle East conflict. A Jewish lobby known as AIPAC (American Israeli Public Affairs Committee) has been the most powerful interest group to influence the United States' foreign policy especially after President Truman's administration. This article describes the internal development of AIPAC and some AIPAC's actions in order to get public supports to influence the decision makers.

Abstract

The meaning of philosophy in Indonesian has become an interesting topics, especially when it is related to another concept, culture. Some Indonesian dictionary writers defined "filsafat" (philosophy) in many ways from different aspects. However, the definitions have not reflected the meaning accuracy, both from the linguistic pattern aspect and from its terminology. Besides that, the definitions, which come from Western, invite another question. If there is Western philosophy, then what about Eastern philosophy, especially Nusantara philosophy? That question is also discussed in this writing.
